Does anyone use spoons while fishing to attract bass?

I don't hear of spoon talk too often, if at all. Was curious if it's a thing of the past or if there are some out there that still use this method to catch bass.

What is the ideal combo to fish them? (ex: baitcaster vs spinning, Mh/F, 12#, etc.)

Go to the fishing articles section of this board. Mike Icaneli does an article on spoons. Btw they are deadly certain times of the year on Lake Erie.

Do you put a trailer on them? Also, do you add a swivel to avoid line twist?

I'll add everything from a pork frog to a skirt ;)

Never ever a swivel! I fish it on top over the nastiest cover!

Another tip, when a bass blows up on the spoon missing it and they will, I drop the rod on the deck and quickly throw worm to the exact spot of the swirl. I do this with frogs also.

There's an excellent point to be made about what kind of spoons....just like anything else, there's a bevy of them, all with a purpose. Vertical jigging, flutter spoons, casting spoons, trolling spoons, weedless Mossboss/Johnson style spoons, spoonplugs.....

Spoons of all types are highly productive & very overlooked ;)

I've had anglers laugh when they see a Gold Johnson's Spoon tied on my rod but the laughter stops where see the results.

The same goes for the Lake Fork Tackle Flutter Spoon, I hear "you stripper fishing" to which I grin, wink, and nod.

Same here, Catt. Guys think I'm tossing those Lil' Cleos for trout. Thing is, smallies are stupid for them.

I also find spoons very overlooked in prespawn period, Fan casting ledges and points and let the flutter do all the work. Combo of covering water or the option of slowing it down. With the year we have had around here, the shad die off has not really happend- and bait is very plentiful and easy to find- it just so happens a spoon is the same size of most of them.

I think it is a year round bait, not just summer/winter.

Spoons without a doubt are my #1 weapon ( might be a toss-up with a bucktail) in my arsenal, I catch everything on them from freshwater to inshore fish and offshore ocean as well. As said there is a host of different types, each with it's own characteristic. I don't think one is any better than another for actually catching fish, but some techniques may prove unfavorable with certain designs. I have twisted braid up so bad to make it unusable in minutes trolling using a drone or any type of spoon that revolves, BB swivels never made a difference. I use sling jigs or braid ( that's a brand name), Williamson for trolling with no twist at all. J-spoons are terrific in weedy conditions or to bounce off a reef, they hang up way less. Thin profile ones like Tsunami, and diamond jigs are great for throwing into a heavy wind. I probably keep 20-30 spoons in my trunk for inshore, have another 6-8 in my offshore tackle bag and keep 1/2 dozen at home for freshwater. Hook replacement is that's needed, treble or siwash. One thing I like about J-spoon and Clark spoons is 1 large hook.

Do you try to use a worm that is close to the same color as the spoon or frog, or does it matter?

Bird dog, it does not matter, what happens it a bass will strike a top water bait thinking it killed and then circles around looking for what it killed. Problem is the angler keeps reeling removing the bait out of the strike zone.

I use weighted or unweighted plastics, it does not matter ;)
