I was given a brand new berkley lightning rod 6' Medium Heavy casting rod. I would like to know a good baitcasting reel for a beginner and also what type of application this rod would be best for.

Daiwa Strikeforce 100H. Best reel for the price and IMO, better than the Silvermax. I used that same set up as my frog rod for the longest time. Set it up with braid and out that baby to use! Topwater sounds like a good option for that rod.

Your best bet is to find a good discount one such as this

or you could check the flea market and get a nice used one such as this

The Asaro in the first link is a fine reel, and while I've never owned a Pro Qualifier, I have owned a Citica 200E and an Asaro. With the exception of the weight difference, the Asaro was comparable to the Citica 200E in every way performance-wise. I also found it to be smoother and more comfortable to palm.

If I had a need for another baitcaster, I'd be buying an Asaro...or two. It's a $130 reel that's been discontinued, so the $50 closeout price is an excellent deal.

I agree just picked up 3 asaros. I have Pqs as well and they are fine performers also. I have to say that with initial use i like the asaro better. Even thought he PQs have some better asthetical components (swept handle, clicking drag star) that i enjoy i think the aluminum side plate of the asaro gives me better piece of mind. Just tryin to figure out how i can go buy the remaining 6 that my Academy had in stock :D
