im having a hard time figuring out the forage in my lake. this fish was floating past my dock yesterday. does anyone know what it is? shad maybe? looks like one of the huge snapping turtles got it! i just want to know if it belongs in my freshwater lake or if some threw it in there and then a turtle or something got ahold of it. so is this a freshwater or salt water fish? im lost an need help. if i can figure this out maybe i can try to match the hatch a little better. Thanks in advance...

X3.

It is a shad. Something in your lake is BIG to take a chuck out of it.

X4

Gizzard shad will grow up to approx 7 inches in their first year of life.

Some will grow to be a little larger and some not quite as large, but the average is roughly 7 inches, threadfin shad are usually no more than 4 inches in length.

Gizzard shad. We have a couple lakes that they grow to monster proportions and will even bite a tiny jig at certain times. Big catfish love those things and have no problem eating the 12+ inch shad we occasionally use for bait if we can get them.

definately a gizzard shad. I have caught some big ones through the ice on the strip pits i fish. I freeze them up and use them as cut bait for cats. I have even cut them up on the ice and caught catfish on them on a tip up.

I know Gizzard shad grow anywhere from 8-14" the biggest one I had ever seen was close to 9" I can only imagine the catfish and their size munchin on this size of bait fish lol.

I have a question, how do you get them? do you wait until they migrate to the shallows in the spring?

I only know of one lure that matches that. The Bull Shad swimbait.

That's a pretty good looking lure there Flukemaster, I have never seen one, usually I am working a salt and pepper super fluke to get a reaction when the fish are after 'em.
