Here is my question. Which line do you think would be most visible? Standard clear 14 lb mono such as stren original or trilene easy cast (something like that)... or a 17-20lb flurocarbon?

For some reason I have ALOT of trouble with breakoffs on flurocarbon (using a palomar knot and 14lb test). I have alot less on the line I currently use (Trilene Max) but I really crave the sensitivity I gain with the flurocarbon. I fish alot of wood and rock so I know most of my problems come there. I was thinking if I upgraded to heavier-duty flurocarbon it may solve some issues but I'm not sure.
1) for castibility and 2) visbility

I fish semi-clear to stained waters so visbility does matter a lot, especially since the lake is highly pressured.


Any tips or ideas? Or maybe even another line to try? For the most part the fluro I have used is Berkley 100% and Spiderwire flurocarbon.

Here is something that will help, well should.

Hone your knot tying skills, and use the Trilene knot for all your FC, I have also seen it called a Colby Knot, it is the strongest knot you can get, always make sure you are wetting it when you are snitching it down.

Palomar will result in a lot of break off's, and even more when you get into higher # FC line. That is what I have noticed anyway, and that's all I ever used to use across the board.

Now I will use a clinch with Mono always, and Trilene/Colby with FC.

Remember just practice the knots, and it will be the best hing ever.


But for visibility, FC is harder to see than MONO so they claim, I tend to agree.

I use Vicious FC and I prefer the 15# test the most, it needs line conditioner for sure, but for the price it is not that bad. I am still on the fence about FC lines, and so I am not investing money into nicer line until I feel it is work it.

Try the San Diego Jam know. I was having fits with breakoffs and fluoro, this not appears to have solved it. I also really like braid with fluoro leader material (fly-fishing) it's pretty different from main line fluoro.

I love FC line other than the break offs I have had. I have never tried anything larger than 15lb, so 17lb is scaring me. I used to tie the Trilene knot all the time until I discovered the Palomar. I feel its better in alot of situations, and I NEVER have issues with mono with it. But that may be my issue with the FC so I will go back to trying that and see if it helps. Thanks for the tip. Any other suggestions?

Yo-Zuri Hybrid #12 has a breaking strength of 19.5 lbs. "Purple Smoke" blends
very well with stained water, virtually invisable. The knot I recommend is basically
a noose: Duncan Knot, also known as 16-20 and Pitzen:

Lets keep it simple. Palomar is for braid. Fluoro, eh. If you want fluoroish monoish line with great strength and abrasion resistance, buy YoZuri. Use the good ole clinch knot and be done with it. I use 12# YoZuri and a clinch knot, and only retie if the line gets pretty bad. No problems.

The problem is defiantly with your knot. Use something else besides the palomar. U can use it but u have to take a lot of time and make sure your lines don't cross. I have been using the shaw grisgby knot and like it. Look it up on YouTube

Just start using the san diego jam. If tied correctly you won't break off very often if ever due to your knot.

I have switched to Seaguar15# for my set ups and love it. First fluoro line I have ever used.

I am not sure about the complaints on break off using the palomar knot though. Ive never had that issue. I only switched to the improved clinch knot as it waists less line when re-tying all the time.

I haven't been able to try the line conditioner yet but I have noticed a ton better distance and less backlashes with fluro over mono.

Looks to me like the Duncan and San Diego Jam knots are basically the same thing, only maybe lest line twisting on the Duncan?

How does the Yo-Zuri Hybrid do on handling?

Yo-Zuri handles/casts very good for a line that is also abrasion resistant and has high knot strength, and the price of it is barely any more than a good mono-but lasts 2 or 3 times as long.

I have been using seguar abraz-x for about a month know 20# and I love it, I also don't use line conditioner and have had no problems
