I almost always stop it before it hits the water, with the exception of fishing deep. When fishing deep I will start to pull the rod way back behind me ass the bait hits the water. I do this to give myself a lot of slack line for a vertical fall to deep water.

I never would have thought of the bringing your rod back b4 it hits the water to create slack. Great tip I'll give it a try.
Thanks for the feedback.

When I saw the video on the reel itself spinning, it looks like the line is almost birds-nesting. I was wondering about that because I always thought to get it right it had to be tight the whole time. But if that is the case, then I guess I am getting better! Also, why does it seem that my casts that cause brd-nest the most are simple ones? (i.e. light lure and short easy cast.)

The reason for that is because the spool gets spinning faster than the line is being taken off by the bait. With lighter baits, the spool is almost spinning independently and faster than the bait, whereas heavy baits tend to actively pull line off of the spool.

I just started using a baitcaster and I've been having trouble with it. I have a quality reel. Brand new Abu Garcia Revo Sx. What is the magnetic brake used for. I can't really figure out what it effects. Any help?

Magnetic brake controls the end of the cast centrifugal brake controls the beginning of the cast. So if you have a dual brake system you have both ends of the cast covered. I believe I have that correct. :)
