Rip John Roberts Iii Powhatan Va

4 posts in this topic

Although not a member, John 22yo was an avid bass fisherman and a very good friend with whom I shared my home with for past 1y9m. He fished almost every day year around from the time he woke up (usually early afternoon) until dusk. Sunday Sept 15 2013 John passed away in his favorite fishing hole which is a private lake he fished most of the time. He was seen by someone taking a break from fishing and going for a swim in the afternoon but appeared fine. Search team including officers on the ground, tracking dog and helicopter search that night but his body was not found until next day by dive team. Still in shock but wanted to post something in his honor as his funeral is today. Some members may have seen us in a green and white Nitro at Powhatan Lakes

ndaniel, read the story and obit in the Richmond Times-Dispatch and was very concerned about his loss.

I was thinking "why would someone go into the water for no apparent reason?"  Of course, you think he went in to swim.

I still don't understand what happened. I originally thought he went in looking for a lost bait in the structure. Or he fell in and hit his head. Something did not add up about the situation. Did he get caught in underwater structure? Swam out too far and got a cramp?

Ponds are usually not that deep. One would think he could dog paddle and stand up close to shore and walk up the bank if he had a problem.

John seemed to be a good kid and a very good bass fisherman. Was he a strong swimmer? Big loss to our local community when we lose a good kid.

Sorry for his loss. We would have loved to have him join our bass club.
