Appalachian Outlaws

27 posts in this topic

Any of you watching this show?  I assume some of the members here may be from the area.  Is this one of those over dramatized shows or is that the real deal of what's happening?

I wouldn't doubt it's hyped up just like Swamp People. I've noticed when the georgia guy had his truck roll back, when he got out the window was shut, but after it slid away it was down so he can jump threw it. Another that I just saw was the landowner had his truck burned but it looked like an older small pickup and not his Ford Ranger Edge

The "reality" shows have more writers than a regular TV show. People who work for them have to sign NDA agreements so they cannot talk about how much is completely faked.

I've caught it a couple times. There's another show called Hillbilly Blood which seems less scripted and they've had episodes on ginseng and moonshine. Not as entertaining as Appalachian Outlaws or Moonshiners

Hillbilly Blood seems kind of scripted to me for sure. But I think the purpose is to show how people can improvise and live off the land. Those guys probably have real everyday jobs to make a living though.

Have yet to see Appalachian Outlaws, actually never heard of it until now. Will have to check it out.

Moonshiners is great, though i dont like what Mark and Jeff are doing blowing up cars and stuff. That had to be scripted and just a way of showing how moonshining can lead to violence like in the old days, if it was real they would definately be going to jail because its all right there on tape for everyone to see.

I'm from Greenbrier County, WV. Have lived in Ronceverte, Renick, know where Wolf Creek is, you'll not find it on any map because it isn't a town rather an real loosely defined area, my family is the oldest documented family in Greenbrier County, Mom's side (Morgan). Just about everybody I know has dug 'seng, its abundant. The show is absolutely fake, nobody is being shot or run off because of 'seng. You can watch Appalachian outlaws on history, switch over to the golf channel and watch Big Break filmed at the Greenbrier Hotel, both filmed within a few miles of each other. The only truth I've seen is the distrust of outsiders, trust is earned. the McMillion guy's story is real.

The reason there isn't a moonshiner from WV on Moonshiners is because making moonshine is completely legal in WV, selling it is not, you are allowed to make something like 10 gallons a year.

Hillbilly Blood puts up info each episode the scenario's are setup to show how it can be done. I don't mind it if they are being honest about it like this. It annoys me when shows like the ones mentioned, duck dynasty or turtle man proclaim its their real life.

On a side note, turtle man is under federal investigation for animal deaths after they were used in the scenario setup.

Wait until you hear how Kanawha is pronounced. Suddenlink should have it on demand. Also some of the mileage and directions given from one place to the other. So far Wolf Creek has been in the state of Ohio from mileage and directions and Greenbrier and Monroe counties.

Hillbilly blood is entertaining but there is no way the one dude is as hillbilly as he claims....The dude Eugene tlaks in some pretty technical terms and uses Celsius very often when referring to temperature.  I am not sure about everyone else but that is not something that is normal around here unless you are in teh scientific community.  He also uses some pretty involved scientific principles which isn't a big deal but understanding all of the info behind them and why they work is what makes me wonder.

I like the show and find it entertaining but i am led ot believe that this lifestyle is a choice after receiving some sort of formal education and experience elsewhere.

I say its fake. That stuff is farmed up here in acres. Its not fenced in, or guarded with armed security. If the big farms up here were having the same problems. Like they talk about in the show. It would be all over the local news.

I think all these shows are all technically called "non-scripted" shows.  Obviously fake scenarios that characters then act out.  Another show comes to mind...quack quack.

It's not as far fetched as the others. I guess what I don't understand is how the networks can get away with filming and promoting illegal activities which makes me believe Moonshiners and some others are 100% fake. Jim Tom wears a shirt with the Brand Jim Toms moonshine on it, but when I googled it there is no such thing. I just find it hard to believe all the shows "Stars" are not being investigated by the feds.

On a side note, Porter Ridge has to be the worst show on TV yet I can't stop watching it

I read something about the whole moonshine thing and basically video and not knowing where it is or when it happened is what stops them from prosecuting but it doesn't stop them from keeping an eye on them. I know when moonshiners first came out there was a big thing with the VA ABC board and why they couldn't catch the guys and if it was fake, etc.....they said no it was real and if they could catch them they would.

oh, and one more thing I thought about, nobody back home calls them the Appalachain Mountains, we call them the Alleghenies.  Yes they are part of the Appalachains, but to distinguish them from the Blue Ridge part which goes through VA, ours are the Allegheny. If you look at a map, the Blue Ridge goes east of WV.  It is a moot point, but a matter of pride for some, at one time there was debate as to whether the Allegheny Mountains were part of the Appalachain Chain at all, or the other way around.

Big difference in farm seng and wild seng...

Whats really that different about it? Other then it being in the ground longer. When it is wild ginseng.

That is pretty inserting. I figured farmed stuff would use chemicals, and not be in the dirt as long. I don't know if it effects taste or not. As I have never eaten, or drank some thing. Were the main source is ginseng.

I did see a farm in WI that sells it on the web. At 10 dollars a oz. Mind you I don't know what to price is for wild. But at that price. A few people could be watching this show. Knowing they could make a pretty penny just robbing local farms.

So many of these "reality" shows are a fraud.  Think about it....if you were going to lie in wait to shoot someone, would you invite a tv camera along?  And how convenient that there is camera following the shooter and another camera following the intended target.  Some of it is entertaining but surely not "reality".  Ever watch "Devils Ride"?  Supposedly about two outlaw motorcyle clubs on the brink of war.  Sure, allow a camera to follow you to a rival club's "secret" hideout (a trailer in the desert) and let it film you blowing it up with explosives.  Right.   This stuff is so scripted it's ludicrous that they try to pass it off as reality.

Some shows like the ones depicting survival techniques in wild remote locations are pretty good.  At least they teach something and they do fess up that some of the scenes are recreations based on actual situations.

But for me the shows that are real are the best.   I like Deadliest Catch.  Pretty hard to fake that stuff.
