Tell me about your best day on the water in 2016

29 posts in this topic

I thought I'd be fun to share the stories and conditions of our best day of 2016. Here's mine:

Late March, private lake in the Poconos, Pa: it was the first set of warm days in early spring. Four days of sunshine and 70*+ weather. I arrived at my honey hole with winter gear tied on (ice was only two weeks prior), but quickly found the bass schooling and demolishing bluegill in the shallows. A 1/2oz Bass Pro Chatterbait boated me a 7-2, two 5+, and dozens of 3-4lb class bass. The action was non-stop and everywhere. I live for those days!

This is easy for me, even though I don't catch beasts like some of you. It was September 1st, I'd planned on getting up early but promised my son we could "camp out" on the living room floor in our sleeping bags that night...so I slept like crap and woke up at 5am to ridiculous winds. I started loading up and finally just decided to forget it I was tired and sore and the wind was insane. Around 11am I started feeling antsy and decided what the heck I'd already planned on fishing and had everything rigged up, so loaded up and headed out. When I got to the lake it was white capping and as I put the kayak in a guy who was playing fetch with his dogs at the launch asked me genuinely if I was sure that was a good idea. I told him I'd be fine, the wind was blowing in a direction that I was confident I could beach myself in the lily pads and be OK. As I paddled out getting soaked I still wondered about my decision making though. So I finally make it to the thick stuff and drop the anchor to try and stay put. First fish came right away on a Senko, dink. Followed shortly after by a 3lb2oz on my go-to white Live Target mouse, then another 2lb5oz on the mouse and finally a 2lb11oz on a Whopper Plopper. This was the best multi-fish day I had all year even though I was basically blown off the lake within two hours even with my anchor dragging bottom.

My best day on the water in 2016 was part of a weekend fishing trip. I was staying on a 500 acre lake in the mountains in early June, and the top water bite was on fire. I was getting hits on almost every cast with a Rapala Skitter Walk. I was catching multiples in a row, sometimes on 5 consecutive casts. The biggest was around 3 pounds, but the way they were jumping in the boat was incredible.

My best day , I only caught 1 keeper though it was my biggest fish of the year . What made it my best day Is I got on two schools of fish .It was probably a 80 fish day, could have been 100 but I ran out of time . The first school was on a long point . The second school  were just fish I saw on the depth finder on a deep featureless flat .Caught them on diving and lipless cranks .

My best days for 15 inch keepers came November  at Mark Twain . I limited out fishing shallow diving crankbaits in the cuts along bluffs .

It was early June of 2000. My buddy talked me into night fishing. We left at 8pm and fished till the sun came up. It was one of those nights where you caught a bass every other cast and I didn't realize how long we were out until the sun came up. My wife was not impressed with the story seeing as she was 8 1/2 months pregnant and I had no cell phone. Still for bank fishing it was the best night ever.

I didn't do much fishing in 2016 due to illness. Here is my most recent best day December 2014.  Cold front bassin at its best.

The outing on May 12, 2016 only showed me 6 smallmouth, but the 5 best made up a 20+ lb. limit. The morning fish came on a Spin Bait 80 which they didn't want in the afternoon so I changed up to a 2" chunk trailer on an 1/8 oz. bucktail jig and they liked that fine for the rest of the day.

Not a lot of huge fish but lots of numbers..

We always do a few kayak / camp trips on the Upper Potomac. Load up the kayaks with camping gear, rods, tackle, drinks, and food. Always have a blast and it's just a beautiful place to fish and get away for a bit.

Mine was in July and was one of my first intentional night fishing outings of the year.  I was fishing hollow bodied frogs mainly and ended up catching 2 citation sized bass and a few other smaller ones.   I have had better days but that was my favorite of the year.

July 19th (a Tuesday).  I took the day off work to take a friend of mines sister fishing.  She was visiting from out of state and he couldn't get off work.  We caught 60 fish, including an 8-0 on a Ned rig (ZMan TRD) in the first 30 minutes and a 5-5 later on skipping a Senko under a dock.  She had never seen a bass over 4 lbs before, so those fish were memorable for her.  She was interested in learning some of the techniques I use, so I was able to teach her both of the aforementioned methods.  Bonus was she caught fish as she learned them while I played guide for the day.

Had some really good days . New years day 2016 I was on a great bite the prior week  caught my only d.d. for the year on 1/1/16. Just over 10. This year was my first father's days as a new dad. On father's day Sunday it was hot as he'll here. Caught fish all day. Then got on a school of big bass around 3 and went literally 3 hours and didn't make 3 consecutive cast without catching a fish. Idk how many. Wouldn't doubt if it was over 100. And big ones. Didn't weigh any but the biggest was probably pushing 7 pounds. I was sad because my dad couldnt make it here this year. Or he would have been there share that special day on the lake with me. Those 2 stand out. Alot I loved it. But it's days like that I wish I wasn't fishing alone.

My best day was an early fall evening at a local honey hole (3-4 acre golf course bass pond full of vegetation) and from about 6-730 pm I was walking the entire perimeter of the pond, throwing a rebel popR lure alongside the vegetation lines. Pop, pop.. REST. Pop, pop, pop REST (repeat). In an hour and a half I snagged 17 largemouth on top water action, missed about 6 or so more. Ranging from *** pounders. It was magical. And it was my second day trying top water action. Still gives me goosebumps thinking about that night!

I don't remember my best fun fishing day of 2016...........having been on the water over 150 times between early April, and Early Nov. they all kind of blend together.  There were a lot of good days,  a few tough ones, and a plenty of just average ones.

My favorite tournament day of 2016 was in early August. I fished as a stand in with the guy in my avatars 16 year old son during one of their club tournaments on my home lake, because his dad was in the Upstate Anglers Crazy Cash event, and their club allows non-members to fish with a club member once per season as a stand in, or "try out the club before you join" type of thing.

This club didn't know me for nothing, except the tournament director, who usually does very well on Silver., and has beaten me here before...............not today fella's...............I went out and caught 20lbs in six hours, and won that thing handily with the tournament director finishing 2nd with 12lbs.  My partners kid did a fine job of netting fish all day, and I was able to send him home to dad with some gas/tackle money LOL.

Overall , I didnt have as many good days on the water as usual this year.

All the bigger fish I caught ( over 4 pounds ) were caught individually on days when I didnt catch very many.

Best day for me was probably the half- day I caught 22 including several in the 3 pound range. It was on labor day at my home lake.

Port Sulpher, LA this past October. Spent three days fishing for reds and specs (which is an awful lot like bass fishing) with my pops. One day had the right conditions to sight fish. There is nothing like pitching to a tailing red or leading one as he patrols the weeds. Caught a bunch of fish and got spend some quality time with my dad. Bonus was old Tennessee Football Coach, Bill Battle, was staying at our camp and got to meet and chat with a legend.

Mid October on a small local reservoir.

I caught the fall feeding frenzy just right.

A drizzly day and I caught bass until I ran out of light. Nothing big, average 2 to 3.5 lb range. Out standing day.

Now that I think about it some more, there was a day that kind of stands out....for no other reason than just a bunch of "that never happens" moments

It was early Aug.....hot as blazes. I was on the water early, and the fishing was good from dawn till dusk. Which is not unusual, except for the fact that it was smallmouth that were on fire that day in 8-10 feet of water......The most memorable catch of the day was a 4lber  I hooked deep cranking on a 5xd, that had another 4lber with it. With out hesitation, I dropped a drop shot over the side and the 2nd 4lber bit it. Now I have two 4lbers on at the same time..........one on the crank, one on the drop shot. Now what??

I set the cranking rod down and stood on it while I got the drop shot fish in,  tossed it in the livewell real quick and picked up the cranking rod........fully expecting that fish to have pulled off by now, but it was still on. I got it in, sat down and just laughed. About three casts later with the crank, my cranking rod snapped where I had stepped on it..............oh well.

Best day of 2016 for me is very simple. It was the day I hook up with my neighbor to go fishing for the first time. Before this I always fish alone and not very successful one. After that day he becomes my fishing buddy. We fish together all the time. We help each other in everyway not just fishing. I become serious again about fishing so decided to get a boat. He help me alot about boating taught me all about it. Even thou He is not very good teacher thou since he forget to plug the boat many time lol. And now here I am in canyon lake a small heaven of bass fishing. All of this happened mainly becuz I met him.

All my days on the water are what I'd consider the "best".  Fish or no fish.  I did catch a nice 2-3 lb bass while Musky fishing one day.  Another day caught a 32" Musky.  Had a 3-4 lb bass follow a large spinner up to the boat then just hang there for a minute.

Fished in the rain, fished a foggy day with only about 200' visibility, fish in the heat and wind.  All good days.  Also watched Osprey catch fish next to me and a bald eagle do a fly-by.  Good stuff.

the best day I had was December 26th. that day my niece and nephew went out for the first time with me. my niece lives in same town as I do.my nephew lives n Denver. first time home in a few years. that wanted to go fishing with me like we used to when they were younger.   first time on a boat for the both of em. so when I could open her up, they both just started laughing. we caught a couple of fish but just getting them together was the best day for me.
