Jig modification

I got this bass jig and there is extra skirt sticking through the collar in front . I guess I need to trim that? With what? And I'm guessing the corkscrew piece is for a weed guard? How do I add that?

this looks like a shakey head jig with a skirt you didn't need to trim the front really it would have been fine but normally scisors are fine

The corkscrew isn't for adding a weed guard, it's for adding a plastic trailer (like a worm or craw for example).  You screw the head of the bait onto the corkscrew and then run the hook through the plastic bait and skin hook it.  Makes a weedless presentation.

BTW - welcome to Bass Resource!!

I didn't trim it and thanks. Would you suggest a good trailer?

It's hard to tell the size of jig, but looks fairly small.  (3/16 ounce?  1/4 ounce?)  Hard to beat a Strike King Baby Rage Craw.  If that seems too small then a full-size Rage Craw.

The short skirt strands is common with finesse jigs.

The screw lock indicates the jig is a shaky head type, however a short 1 1/2" piece of finesse worm can also be attached to a screw lock and used as a weed gaurd and the trailer nose hooked.
