With all the interest in putting a deck in a boat it gave me an idea. One of our members found out that I had an empty aluminum hull on a trailer and asked if he could pay me to build him a boat out of it. So after many PM's and emails the idea is coming together. I started the build yesterday and I am going post the pictures so all of you can follow along with what is happening. I will take plenty of pictures every day and I will add them to this thread as I go. This way you get a step by step on how I build it while I'm building it. It's as close to reality TV you will get from this website. I think it will be cool.

This is what the boat looked like last week.


Yesterday I finished cleaning it up and then I went to BPS to do a little shopping.


Today it rained all morning. It finally stopped around 12:30.
My goal today was to finish working the bugs out of the layout of the floor and lay it out by mounting the Simpson Strong Tie brackets to the ribs of the boat. I also cut an angle in the 2x4's so they could be mounted to the sides. The 2X4's will allow for easy mounting of hinges and give the load support needed on the edges of the boat. The 2x2's you see in the picture are just there to keep me from bending the brackets while I walk in the boat. They aren't permanent. After I took this picture I had to leave to go get my taxes done but I did come back and do a little more after dark. I will post that picture tomorrow.


Well that's it for today. I hope to have the framing done by the end of the day tomorrow. We will see. The weather is going to be in sunny and 70+ degrees so it will be perfect.

You know this couldn't come at a better time as I am looking at modifying a 14' v-hull.  So definately post lots of pictures and explanations.

Just a suggestion, but your pics would be better with your two sons in the boat 8-).

I am looking forward to following your project.  I am a certified klutz when using tools so I can only live vicariously through those, like you, with the ability to create and complete projects like this.  Good luck with it.

Lunch report.

I measured and cut all the vertical supports and laid them out. Due to the pitch of the bottom of the boat they were different lengths. The length depended on how far from the center line they were located. All wood is coated with Thompson's Water Seal before it is permanently attached.



This is the type of Simpson Strong Tie bracket that I use throughout the build. It is strong and fits perfectly over the ribs of the boat. I use small self tapping machine screws to mount them to the ribs.

 As the owner of a jon boat this will be cool.  From the looks of it this boat didn't have any seats originaly then correct? I've kind of wanted to do what you are doing but my boat has 2 seats plus the front shelf.

This boat was set up like an old Tracker when I bought it. It had a front and back deck that was all rotted out. It had trees growning in it.

The first one that I built was from a boat just like yours. Senko77 owns it now. I can PM you some pictures of it if you would like.

I have commissioned Fluke to build this boat for me. After talking to him I am confident he can create something of the utmost quality, and a whole lot quicker than I could do myself.
It is primarily for my father and I to spend some time together. Both of our schedules are pretty nuts but I might make it to some of the local tournaments next year.

I've done some work on my boat. It came with a font deck but I replaced the deck carpet, added floors & carpeted them, lights and just recently built an electrical box for all motor, ff, batt & light conn's. I might want to redo with full decking in a couple of years.

just wondering about the center of gravity...the deck seems really high. although your probably more experienced than anyone i was just curious. Looks good so far though!

14' and up, stability isn't really an issue.  This looks to be at least 16'.  Main goal with an electric boat is to keep it light.
