Neal Wins Bass Fishing League Tournament on Douglas Lake
KODAK, Tenn. (March 31, 2008) - Boater Larry Neal of Piney Flats, Tenn., won the Bass Fishing League Volunteer Division bass fishing tournament on Douglas Lake Saturday with a five-bass catch weighing 16 pounds, 8 ounces. The victory earned Neal $4,352 and placed him one step closer to qualifying for the Lake Murray Regional Championship in Columbia, S.C., Oct. 23-25, where he could ultimately win a new 198VX Ranger boat and a Chevy truck.
Neal caught his bass flipping a ½-ounce green-pumpkin jig on the upper end of the French Broad River.
Rounding out the top five boaters are Phillip Skofield of Madisonville, Tenn. (five bass, 14-09, $2,561); Tommy Brown of Louisville, Tenn. (five bass, 13-01, $1,705); Rex Pendergrass of Bristol, Tenn. (five bass, 12-09, $1,195) and Derrick Blake of Rockwood, Tenn. (five bass, 12-00, $1,024). Skofield took home the Boater Division Big Bass award, earning $790 for a 6-pound, 12-ounce bass he caught on a Rat-L-Trap.
Mike Obrien of Knoxville, Tenn., earned $2,458 as the co-angler winner Saturday thanks to five bass weighing 11 pounds, 12 ounces that he caught cranking a Rat-L-Trap.
Rounding out the top five co-anglers are Keith Butler of Madisonville, Tenn. (five bass, 10-02, $1,229); Orville Cope of Treadway, Tenn. (four bass, 8-11, $817); Bill Gates of Niota, Tenn. (three bass, 7-11, $573) and Robert Chambers of Elizabethton, Tenn. (four bass, 7-09, $492). Obrien earned $375 as the co-angler Big Bass winner after catching a 6-pound, 7-ounce bass.
Volunteer Division anglers will visit South Holston Reservoir in Bristol, Tenn., April 19 for their second regular-season event, followed by an event on Cherokee Lake in Morristown, Tenn., May 10. The division's fourth qualifying event will be held on Fort Loudoun Lake in Lenoir City, Tenn., June 28. A two-day Super Tournament, the division's fifth and final event, will be held on Watts Bar Lake in Spring City, Tenn., Sept. 6-7.
