Glasgow Maintains Lead at WBT Bass Fishing Event on Kentucky Lake
GILBERTSVILLE, Ky. - Sheri Glasgow of Muskogee, Okla., stayed far in front Friday at the Kentucky Lake event of the Mercury Marine Women's Bassmaster Tour presented by Triton Boats. Her closest threat after two days of competition, Lucy Mize of Ben Lomond, Ark., trailed her by 3 pounds, 14 ounces.
Glasgow's margin Friday of 3-14 was better than her Thursday lead of 3 pounds, 8 ounces. With a two-day total of 30 pounds, 2 ounces, she stayed in front of the 97-angler field, which was cut to the top 25 for Saturday's final round.
Pros are competing for a top prize of Triton/Mercury boat rig valued at $50,000.
A win Saturday would be Glasgow's second of the season. She pulled off a wire-to-wire WBT victory on Arkansas' Lake Dardanelle in Arkansas, forever shedding the nickname "Deuce" bestowed on her for her tendency to place second in tournaments. She could, however, earn it back, but with a different meaning: winner of two WBT events.
"That's a second I'll take," said Glasgow, 40, a designer and rep for a custom cabinet business when she isn't competing on the water. "I would really be excited to win again, but right now I'm more focused on the Angler of the Year race and my game plan for tomorrow."
Glasgow was referring to the 2007 Toyota Women's Bassmaster Tour Angler of the Year points race, which she led going into the Kentucky Lake event. The pro with the most points at season's end takes the title and the prize that comes with it, a 2008 Toyota Tundra. A win Saturday could make Glasgow unstoppable, even with one more event to go after Kentucky Lake.
Glasgow had five-fish limits Thursday and Friday, and her game plan for Saturday includes another limit from spots to which she'll have to hustle before anyone else gets to them.
"I'm a little nervous about pressure from another tournament," she said of an unrelated event going on at the lake. "I'd like to get two to three fish off one place I have before someone takes it over."
Glasgow has proved hard to catch for two days, but she'll likely feel pressure Saturday from Mize, who's looking for her first WBT win. She posted 26-4 for the event's first two days.
"Today, after I switched baits, they started biting," said Mize, a 46-year-old, full-time pro angler. "The different bait was the key. I left them biting to save fish for tomorrow."
Trailing Glasgow and Mize was Karla Bullard of Del Rio, Texas, a dental hygienist who led the season opener on Amistad, her home lake. Her two-day total of 25-6 - less than a pound behind Mize's 26-4 - put Bullard in third place on Friday.
Three-time WBT winner Tammy Richardson of Amity, Ark., was fourth with 25 pounds, 3 ounces. She moved up from a 15th-place finish on the first day.
Mickie Wolfinbarger of Halfway, Mo., a computer design technician with the Missouri Department of Transportation, posted 22-6 for fifth place. She was in second place after the first day.
In the co-angler division, where the top prize is $1,000 in cash and a Triton/Mercury rig worth $25,000, Linda Owens of Brandon, Miss., led Day 2 with 16 pounds, 12 ounces. Tracy Doty of Roanoke, Texas, was second with 15-7. First-day co-angler leader Robbie Hartline of Foristell, Mo., fell to third Friday with a two-day total of 14-0.
Rounding out the top five in the co-angler division were Carilyn Hill of Coweta, Okla., with 12-14; and Brenda Bates of La Porte, Texas, with 11-4.
Bonnie Johnson, of Weatherford, Texas, had her Day 2 weight disqualified for violation of Rule 6iii. The applicable part of the rule states, "All competitors are bound by the prevailing statutes and regulations of the various states within which they fish."
