  1. Past hour
  2. I have settled on braid with a leader or without a leader. You could say I tend to run 99% backing. My spools have 80 yards of braid (Shimano 71s have 40 pound and 201s have 65 pound) and I run leaders between 6-12 feet. Normally I use Sunline flouros (15-25 pounds) but have some Yo-Zuri hybrid (15-17 pound) that I like and Trilene mono (12 pound) in case I ever need it. I also replaced all my bearings with full ceramics.
  3. I hate the clamshells and avoid them when I can. I have never noticed any real action difference from paddle tails fresh from a clamshell vs ones that have been laying in a plano box for weeks/months/years.
  4. So I’m ready to pull the trigger on a rod today, either the kistler helium 3, ALX ZOLO or Shimano Zodias. I have gone back and forth between many companies (sorry I dragged you all threw it haha) but I’m going to get one of these today. Not sure which and still having troubles. I can get the kistler helium 3 for 213$ with the sale going on. I will be getting a MH fast or Xfast for jigs and Trigs. Spinnerbait or chatterbiats. I like a thinner handle so I can palm easily. Not that it has to be super thin but I once had a rod with such a fat grip it was uncomfortable. Anyway which one of these would be best for sensitivity , lightweight and all around best if you had to choose one
  5. Personally, I love jig/flipping rods with a blank that completely "shuts off" when it gets to the "meat" of the blank. Love setting the hook and feeling that snap/shock of a hookset on a short line with heavy braid.
  6. Was going to mention Loomis but Tom (WSB) got to it first and I agree. I could go on but better to listen from the master himself (from 4:43 mark): That diving board analogy is right on the money.
  7. Wow i just saw the g.loomis classic series. They are exactly what i am looking for. How are g.loomis rods in terms of power? For a 2 rod system should i get the heavy and medium heavy? I see theres not much lure weight difference between the medium and medium heavy
  8. The money's gone but I still expect a product that works and is free from manufacturing defects just like anything else I buy. Back on the topic. I have several 110's and they've held up well except for the hooks.
  9. Don't the Mag Bass tapers have a softer tip? I've never used one but from my research in trying to understand what "Mag Bass" means I've come to understand that it's a rod with a softer action, especially in the tip section.
  10. If it weren't for lots of broke and lost lures, I'd probably have to find new excuses to spend so much time and money on tw.com. It's all about perspective....how you look at it.....to me, it's not a broken bait; it's an excuse to replace it with three new ones
  11. Try a weightless fluke, 4" grub on a 1/8 oz jig head, or a floating jerkbait. Those should all stay above the grass. Also, don't forget about topwater.
  12. I would order one of the classic Loomis 6 foot casting rods in GL3, IMX or GLX and be done, they are going to be the best out there as 6 footers are getting hard to find, and they are still in production. or i just looked at St Croix's website and they make a 6 foot med power Avid, which would be awesome as well.
  13. There is a lot of markup but at the same time I don't get the feeling that it's a very profitable industry. In reality, it's almost impossible to make a rod that's noticeably better than other rods on the market. The only way to differentiate your product from the competition is through marketing which is probably where most of the cost of a rod goes. Same is probably true for Reels/Line/Lures...etc Occasionally, I search the web for wholesale Chinese manufactures just to see how much it cost to buy a generic tackle wholesale. Last time I did this for rods, I found a manufacture where you could buy rods from $15 to $55 each with a minimum order of 50 rods. The $55 rods were high modulus graphite with fuji components and premium cork just like you would expect in a high end rod. I'm sure if you ordered several thousand you could get them for even less.
  14. Just to start a discussion: Are there any well known fishermen that you think would have done well if they had gone down the Tourney Pro route? I'm a big fan of Al Lindner and I've often wondered how we would have fared if he had stuck with Bass tournaments. He won a couple, and then decided to devote himself to In-Fisherman (for which I'm glad). Back in those days a yankee on the tournament trail was a rare thing.
  15. lol when i buy a fishing lure i fully accept that money is gone forever... you could lose it any number of ways
  16. That is a great deal.. I already have a Dobyns waiting for a reel. But at that price I’d be trying out the reel and getting the rod for $26. Any reviews on the rod? The only option left on American legacy is 7’ 2” heavy. I do need a real heavy stick.. will this work? My dobyns fury 704 isn’t as heavy as I had thought so it’s now an all around texas rig/jig rod.
  17. What about us poor kayak anglers? Imagine the terror it would inflict seeing a out of control boat getting closer and closer as you try to pedal or paddle out of the way. Clearly the guy lacked common sense. No life jacket was his choice and his life to loose in the end. The lack of using the safety lanyard puts others at risk and shouldn't be excused. He should be fined and his boat should be impounded for the fishing season to teach him a lesson.
  18. 20% off with code EASTER19 at that big fish place in the land of Kentucky
  19. I know, my wrists also get sore but i dont really feel it when im fishing. I feel them the next day lol I prefer regular butts over pistols but ill take what i can find.
  20. Aren't all guys paranoid about running out of battery power? I know I am. The toy that prompted this thread is most likely out of my price range, plus I don't have power poles or talons on my boat, plus I don't even have a smart phone to manage the ap - I'm still a flip phone guy. But - if I had all those things, I'd be interested in a method of keeping track of where my battery power was going - these days electronics eat up a little more power (so I"ve heard) I've always wondered about a charging system that charged/topped of your boat batteries while driving down the road using your tow vehicle's alternator. Many years ago In-fisherman ran an article about that, but I don't remember much other than it was possible.
  21. I don't plan to use this $15 off $200 code. Please post in thread if you use it so others don't bother trying tgc9xjajdepf must redeem by June 30, 2019
  22. On the water when I take someone with me, I leave spots that I know have fish on them so that they can have that opportunity to catch something. I had this one time where I had trolling motor issues and just sat in back of the boat and used the motor to putt around to make sure the guy with me had the chance to catch fish. Just small stuff but I always want the person I invite along to have a good time when they perhaps don't have that chance to go alot.
  23. We'd be sicker if all this great tackle wasn't profitable for the makers, and it went away.
  24. If you go with the pistol grip rods, I hope you have wrists of steel - or carbon fiber - or whatever is high tech & strong. Back in the day when I had a couple of pistol grip rods, my wrists would be worn out by the end of the day - often enough that I kept Alieve in my tackle box. I'd take the previous suggestion of getting a 6'6" rod and adjusting it with a hack saw, mostly because of the straight handle.
  25. I try to be kind always in my day to day life. I don't need any recognition, nor do I need to advertise. Kids make it easy to be kind. It's the jerks out there that are the challenge. Be kind to them, and they might surprise you.
