  1. " the zipper " In a crowded city at a busy bus stop, a beautiful young woman wearing a tight leather skirt was waiting for a bus. As the bus stopped and it was her turn to get on, she became aware that her skirt was too tight to allow her leg to come up to the height of the first step of the bus. Slightly embarrassed and with a quick smile to the bus driver, she reached behind her to unzip her skirt a little, thinking that this would give her enough slack to raise her leg. She tried to take the step, only to discover that she couldn't. So, a little more embarrassed, she once again reached behind her to unzip her skirt a little more, and for the second time attempted the step. Once again, much to her chagrin, she could not raise her leg. With a little smile to the driver, she again reached behind to unzip a little more and again was unable to take the step. About this time, a large Texan who was standing behind her picked her up easily by the waist and placed her gently on the step of the bus. She went ballistic and turned to the would-be Samaritan and screeched, 'How dare you touch my body! I don't even know you!' The Texan smiled and drawled, 'Well, ma'am, normally I would agree with you, but after you unzipped my fly three times, I kinda figured that we were friends.'

  4. You guys with avatars of huge smallies tick me off. As I've whined before, I've been chasing these critters near 50 years and my white whale is a 5# smallie. We just don't make those huge fish out here. Well, today I thought I put the whole thing to bed, but no--4lb 14oz. Add it to my list of many times close. Didn't even have the camera with me.

  5. They have nothing to do about catching fish. 1. Know how to handle the fish you catch. This includes such things as how to safely remove a hook from a gut hooked fish. Handling a fish properly so you remove as little slime as possible from the fish. And how to get the fish back in the water as quickly as possible. For instance, if you catch a photo worthy fish, have your camera where it can be readily accessed and ready to go. Don't emulate the fishing shows where they take the time to admire the fish from all possible angles, and then impart a kiss on the fish. If you're not going to weigh it, or take a photo, unhook it and immediately return it to its own environment. 2. Practice common courtesy and etiquette, not only to fellow anglers, but others who use the water for other purposes as well. Don't crowd other anglers or other boaters. Do not bounce your lures off anchored, moored or boats tied to docks. Do not risk bouncing your lures off other boats. Fish around docks, but be respectful, they are the property of others. These are things we all can do, regardless of our skill levels. If you cannot, or will not observe these simple rules, you should be doing something else, no matter how many fish you catch, or how big they are.

  7. A male patient is lying in bed in the hospital, wearing an oxygen mask over his mouth and nose. A young student nurse appears and gives him a partial sponge bath. "Nurse,"' he mumbles from behind the mask, "are my testicles black?" Embarrassed, the young nurse replies, "I don't know, Sir. I'm only here to wash your upper body and feet." He struggles to ask again, "Nurse, please check for me. Are my testicles black?" Concerned that he might elevate his blood pressure and heart rate from worrying about his testicles, she overcomes her embarrassment and pulls back the covers. She raises his gown, holds his manhood in one hand and his testicles in the other. She looks very closely and says, "There's nothing wrong with them, Sir. They look fine." The man slowly pulls off his oxygen mask, smiles at her, and says very slowly, "Thank you very much. That was wonderful. Now listen very, very closely: Are - my - test - results - back?"

  11. An important thing for you to consider. There are two types of maps on the navionics chip, high-def and non high-def maps. The high-def maps are very accurate, and have been charted by Navionics or someone they hired to do the charting. Their depth lines are accurate and plotted in conjunction with GPS. Every time I've been on a body of water that has a high-def chart on the chip, I have found them to be amazingly accurate. When the boat icon is over a tiny shoal, or a deep hole, the boat is in that position. On the non high-def maps, they use existing maps. These are not as detailed regarding bottom contours, nor are they accurately coordinated with GPS readings. If you go to the home page of the Navionics website, you should be able to find a list of lakes that are included for the area of the country that you fish. The list should show which maps are high-def.

  17. all great advice. use the poor man's depth finder=a jig. it doesn't get snagged up and you can bounce it along the bottom to search for flats, drop off, rocks, ledges, weeds. if ur in a pond having clean green weeds come back on the hook good. and mulched leaves sticking to ur hook are good b/c it is a clean, aerated bottom. fish will prefer any of these bottom types as opposed to muck algae. after you've searched a few hundred feet and know the bottom, start back at the beginning and pick it apart more thoroughly. catching a fish on a jig is easy. next time you go out just pitch it in lots of locations. 50% of ur hits will come on the vertical fall. if nothing...let it hit bottom, bounce it off and swim it back. if there is any reaction bite at all they will hit it while swimming back. if that doesnt work they want the dead stick with a few twitches thrown in. "shake the weight not the bait". it takes very little to tug or move a lure. put ur jig in shallow water and practice noticing what little touch it takes to make it jitter/vibrate/pulsate. when i starting jig fishing and couldn't get bite is was b/c i was way over doing the action. good luck

  19. I got one shot to get on the water last week but it was 12-5 basically. Went to Perry couldnt buy a bite in the regular places so I went exploring since the wind was a 5mph nothing... Only got a couple bass couple drums. I did catch a 3lber which made the trip worthwhile but overall it was worse than normal mainly cause that's just a horrible time of day to be out there. At five the action started really picking up but it was just timid bites instead of nothing. The 8in chub largemouth that I caught was as fat as i've ever seen at that age... seriously lucky young fish Anyways, this area seemed to really be holding them, mid summer and all...

  20. I view baits in 2 categories for the most part. Single hooks and treble hooks. Treble hooks IMO need a more mdoerate action or parabolic bend. Single hook baits like spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, t rigs, jigs i use either a F or XF action to get the hook in their quick. Power of a rod will be determined by the weight of the lure your throwing. I use a M/F for 1/4 oz spinnerbaits and under and for 3/8 oz and up i use a MH/F. I hope this helps simplify it for you because it sure did me when it was explained to me this way years ago.Length is up to you. Like Goose said, shorter rods under 7' are more popular because most guys are throwing at specific locations and the shorter rod allows you to be more accurate with your casts.I prefer a 6'6" MH/F for 97% of the spinnerbaits i throw. The only time i really use a 1/4 oz is when im fishing the shallows during spawn. Other than that its 3/8 and up. Good luck finding what you need!

  21. If your looking for a rod to throw plastics and jigs, even around smaller fish, I would look into the Powell 703 or 704. Also, you can get a Powell Deisel 765 for $70 and from what Ive heard, its a great rod! If you just want a M rod, then look at the Powell 702. I would stick to Powell, IMO, you cant beat them in that price range!

  23. Depends on the weight of the spinnerbait...but generally, an intermediate length rod (for accuracy and most SB casts will tend to be shorter and to specific targets) and medium-heavy power to have the ability to set what is usually a pretty stout hook. Lighter spinnerbaits generally need less power, really heavy SBs (like Ledgebusters, et. al) might need more length and power. The classic baitcasting spinnerbait rod offered by many rod companies seems to be a 6'10" medium-heavy. Me, I have a 5'9" mh BC rod that works well for close-quarters SBs, up to a 7'6" mh BC with a 5.2 ratio reel for heavy SBs. Lighter SBs are tossed on a 7' m BC rod or more typically on a 6'8" mxf spinning rod. And, I have two 6'10" mh BC rods...but have never tossed a SB on them...

  25. If you have any sort of podcast listening device, might I suggest subscribing to BassEdge? It is bloody brilliant and has amazing tips. Trust me, I know the feeling. I've only caught 1 fish on each of my last 3 outings, which for me, is great when you consider I have a lifetime of getting skunked, but now that I am more serious about it, it is unacceptable. Middle of the day isn't impossible, but the difficulty gets compounded when you are a) shorebound and fishing clear water. Middle of the day they want to be out of the light and that is difficult when casting from shore. I am VERY close to picking up an inflatable boat or canoe that can go on top of my car.

  26. I read over the manual for the Merc 150 4 stroke, and it indicated that for the first 2 hours of use to vary the throttle, and every 10 minutes to push it to full throttle for 1 minute, then another 10 minutes of variable RPMs.... The next 8 hours it says not be at full throttle for more than 5 minutes.

  27. Lillypads do count as cover, go over them with a frog or go along the side with a spinnerbait or swimjig. Rock piles and large boulders are forms of cover. Cover is really just anything a bass can hide behind and use as an ambush point. Under windy conditions a topwater may work (wouldnt hurt trying). I also like to find a main lake point that the wind is hitting the bank and throw a spinnerbait. Wind creates chop and current and some baitfish follow that and get pushed to the point or the bank, where the bass are waiting for them.

  28. A lakes fishing pressure is determined by how many people fish that lake. A lake that is fished alot makes the fish spooky and require a more finesse aproach to catch them. When it is sunny bass tend to hold a little tighter to the cover and on cloudy days they'll sometimes roam flats feeding. In stained or murky water bass rely more on sound and smell, in clear water they use sight more. Use more natural colors in clear water. Green pumpkin is a good all aroud color. If you fish clear water on a highly pressured lake use smaller lures and lighter line. If not fish anything you want as long as it looks natural. Start out with search baits like crankbaits and spinnerbaits then move to fishing cover. Since the water is clear try not to make your presence to obvious if fishing shallow water.

  31. This thread is more about boat safety and etiquette than about fishing itself. Not all fishermen are boaters and not all boaters are fishermen. Living in Florida for the past 10 years I have spent a great deal of time both fishing from shore at the ocean as well as boat fishing on the ocean. In my area the jet skiers give room and pose no real problem, some even fish off their jet skies. Pleasure boaters pretty much go on about their business and so do the sailors. The problem are the fisherman, they block the inlets fishing for bait, creating a problem for other boaters to get by them, that's against the law. They fish along side piers, not yielding to the pier fisherman, not only is this un courteous but not obeying the 500' rule is against the law. Some of these yahoos come very close while we are drifting or trolling, paying no attention to the wake they are creating, they don't slow down or avoid the area. A 40' boat with three 300 hp motors creates a lot of waves and those boats are all over the place here, not that the smaller boats are any more polite. Confronting these people is the last thing I want to do, situations can easily escalate.

  34. An old Italian man lived alone in the country. It was Spring and he wanted to dig his tomato garden, as he had done every year, but it was very hard work for the aging man as the ground was hard. His only son, Vincent, who used to help him, was currently in prison. The old man wrote a letter to his son and described his predicament: Dear Vincent, I am feeling pretty bad because it looks like I won't be able to plant my tomato garden this year. I'm just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. If only you were here my troubles would be over. I know you would dig the plot for me. Love Dad A few days later he received a letter from his son: Dear Dad, Not for nothing, but don't dig up that garden. That's where I buried the BODIES. Love Vinnie At 4 a.m. the next morning, FBI agents and local police arrived at the old man's house and dug up the entire area. However, they didn't find any bodies, so they apologized to the old man and left. That same day the old man received another letter from his son. Dear Dad, Go ahead and plant the tomatoes now. That's the best I could do under the circumstances. Love Vinnie

  35. From what I've read about this, it's much ado about nothing, really. Very, very few stations carry the fuel, and most won't. It's too expensive to add new pumps for a fuel relatively few vehicles can or will use (you can't use current pumps, you need new ones specifically for E15). In addition, there's no demand for it. And, as mentioned above, the drought has really impacted the production of ethanol, making it a less appealing option. And finally, there's a push by lawmakers to suspend or lower mandates on how much ethanol the country must use this year and next. Between now and then, I suspect a number of industries will sue to have the ruling overturned. So...nothing to get your blood pressure up for now. We're still years away, possibly forever, before we'll see this at the pumps.

  38. A woman meets a gorgeous man in a bar. They talk, they connect, they end up leaving together. They get back to his place, and as he shows her around his apartment, she notices that his bedroom is completely packed with sweet cuddly teddy bears. Hundreds of cute small bears on a shelf all the way along the floor, cuddly medium-sized ones on a shelf a little higher, and huge enormous bears on the top shelf along the wall. The woman is surprised that this guy would have a collection of teddy bears, especially one that's so extensive, but she decides not to mention this to him, and actually is quite impressed by his sensitive side. She turns to him... they kiss... and then they rip each others clothes off and make hot steamy love. After an intense night of passion with this sensitive guy, they are lying there together in the afterglow, the woman rolls over and asks, smiling, "Well, how was it?" The guy says "Help yourself to any prize from the bottom shelf"!

  39. TN 10 day fishing-without trout(which are not in Pickwick) is $25.50. MS only has a 3 day, so a yearly license would be required. It would cost $54.29 AL has an annual license for $46.40 The reason I tell you all of the prices is that all 3 are able to be purchased and fish Pickwick lake, but all 3 also have different boundaries. I will try to explain, but am not 100% on the boundaries. Here is what I know to the best of my ability. I believe the reciprocal agreement works like this: TN license: You can fish from the KY Lake Dam to the north bank at the mouth of Bear Creek. MS license: You can fish the Pickwick Dam to the south bank of bear creek. With TN or AL License, you cannot fish past the bridge in the back of yellow creek (up the Tenn-Tom). (hwy 25 bridge) With the AL license, you can fish Pickwick Dam to Wilson Dam. That's how I remember it anyway. Basically, get an AL license and you are covered for almost the entire lake(except if you want to get in the river for SM like what RW loves to do. THIS REQUIRES A TN LICENSE) If you run the Tombigbee Waterway to Bay Springs, then you need a Miss license. Good spotted bass fishing, and clear water. Obviously if you go above the Wilson Dam into Wilson lake, or lock down into Wheeler, you will need only Alabama. Jeff
