Amazing Wildlife Video
That is some unbelievable footage and the crocodile slipping in there to try and steal the calf was incredible.

When fishing alone?
Different strokes for different folks. I enjoy time on the water with friends, but my time alone is just as important. As far back as I can remember, I have enjoyed being alone in natural settings.

anyone workout?
kwchannel89, As you can see there are a lot of different ideas about how to build muscle so which one do you choose to do? I'll try to simplify your decision. Reps and Weights: High reps are better for building the endurance muscle fibers (known as fast-twitch or red fiber.) Lower reps with higher weight are better for building the strength muscle fibers (slow-twitch or white fiber.) If you want to build both you have to do both. This is why some type of pyramid scheme on the major muscle group exercises (chest, legs, back) is essential. For example: Bench Press for chest (Pectoralis major) Set 1 12 reps@ 135 lbs Set 2 10 reps@205 Set 3 8 reps@225 Set 4 5 reps@245 Etc. (I usually do 3 sets of whatever my 5 rep weight is to build strength but that is me. After working out awhile you will develop your own schemes that you like best.) How Often: You can gain weight working out 3 or 4 times a week. For larger gains a split routine working out 5 - 6 times a week will be necessary but after 3 months or so of this you'll want to take a week or two off and then change your routine. I won't go into the different split routines. You can look them up online, but if you have never lifted much before I would wait for a month or so before I would go to a split routine. You will gain quickly the first 3 - 5 months. After that the gains come much more slowly. Nutrition: Bassdocktor covered most supplements, but IMO he left out the most important one, carb drinks. I'm not talking about any old carb drinks. Most of them are plain sugar. You want a drink that is composed of complex carbohydrates, not simple sugars. An example is TwinLabs Ultra Fuel which provides complex glucose polymers which are direct precursors to glycogen synthesis in muscle. In layman's terms, this means they provide excellent energy stores for your muscles. Most people know they need lots of protein, but you want to save your protein for the synthesis of muscle tissue. The ultimate source of energy for a bodybuilding workout where the heart has quick bursts in speed is carbohydrates, just as for a long run where the heart holds a steady rate, fat is the ultimate source of energy. For weightlifting the body prefers carbs and will burn them if they are available, leaving your protein to build muscle. Now you can eat a couple of potatoes about 3 hours before you workout and you may possibly accomplish the same thing but I prefer carb drinks. Your caloric intake should be approximately 50 - 60% carbs, 35 - 40% proteins, and 10 - 15% fats. I know many think carbs are bad these days, but if your pumping iron to gain mass they are essential. Just make sure you cut back on them if you quit lifting. Warnings: You're 17. Be careful. Use a spotter if you're lifting heavy weights. If you're wanting to tone up and only gain a few pounds high reps with lighter weight may be just the ticket, as Sam suggested. (Most girls tend to like guys like this anyway, rather that the big bulky fella's. I'm not saying you're doing this for girls, but just in case. ) Also, you'll be less likely to injure yourself. If you've previously damaged the cartilage or the ligaments in your knees be very careful with the weights you choose to do squats with. Both of my knees were damaged before I reached my 20th birthday and throughout my 20s and 30s I built my squats up to where I was working out with 335 - 345 and maxing over 400. Now I'm facing a knee replacement probably before I retire. It definitely wasn't worth it. Never forget that if you have a choice between weightlifting and fishing, fishing should always come first.

Hard time reading posts!
You can actually change the font, size, and color yourself. Check out the toolbars at the top of the posting box. Of course, people will use the size that they want to use.

Sufix performance braid "AWESOME"
The title of the thread says it all. I'm a former PowerPro user and I was converted last year. Dodgeguy is like Billy Graham when it comes to Sufix performance Braid.

Shimano baitcasters - the good news and bad.
DITTO! And, my Daiwas(that I use much more than my Shimanos) with their external brake adjustment are very easy to accidentally move the dial when palming the reel.... Dan That has happened to me with Daiwas as well. Great reels with idiosynchracies. Funny story, avid.

Herb Baked Large Mouth Bass
In the "Catch and Release or Keep" thread, Catt stated that he could cook bass that we'd all love. I have one location I fish that is desperately in need of selective harvest. There are way too many small fish at this location for it to ever produce a trophy, so I IM'd Catt and asked him to send me his recipe. He did so, and he was kind enough to post it on here for anyone else who might have some water that requires selective harvest as well. Thanks again, Catt.

what do you ugly stick haters use?
If you push your upper limit on price up to around $90 - $100 I would recommend a St Croix Premier or a Shimano Compre rod. The Compre seven foot spinning rod lists for $89 and the 6 foot is $79.

Rude fisherman
Ronnie, actually this is a common occurrence on Missouri Trout streams also, including those where the trout naturally reproduce. Especially on the opening day of the season, these guys stand shoulder to shoulder.

any other ugly stick owners out there?
Well, I don't use Ugly Sticks, but I have a couple of them I keep around for situations like last Saturday. I took my step-grandchildren crappie fishing. Their two, biological grandfathers have both passed away so I'm the only grandfather they have. They had only caught one fish between them in their life. I had scoped out a spot the day before where the crappie were lurking near a bank. They had a ball. Both were catching crappie right and left. These two kids haven't stopped asking me when we're going to go again. The Ugly Sticks did their job for that day.

What are Fishing Reports Based on?
Unfortunately, I think this is true for many areas. I still look at the reports in my area, but I take much of their information, other than water temperatures and lake levels, with a grain of salt. The percentage of the time that the report has matched what I actually discovered on the water is very low. Even accurate reports are often a few days old before you read them. Situations can change quickly.

To all the Fellas I know on the Board
That's excellent, Muddy (Dominick.) I'm sure you'll tack on plenty more. Fifteen years of bathing every day is quite an accomplishment. : Seriously, Dude, I'm really happy for you. Ed

Tournament mortality rates?
Thanks for the links, Glenn. I had read some of these before, but it was good to read them again.

Tournament mortality rates?
I'm reading posts regarding how many fish people say they have lost. Remember that the fish that die often do so after they are released. It's sometimes difficult to know how many fish we've actually killed. The instances where large tournament fish kills have been reported involved fish that were released at the end of the tournament. These anglers probably left the tournament thinking that the mortality rate was good. Only a few hours later was the actual damage known.

Casting accuracy
Long distance casting is just like pitching a baseball. Even the best have bad days, though we have the advantage of using our thumb and the rod to get us closer to the target. Once you get the hang of it, pitching and flipping are easier for accuracy because of the short distances involved, but again there are days when you'll be a little off.

When the levee breaks---not a Zeppelin reference
So far, it's turning out that the crest is below what was originally predicted on the Kansas and Missouri rivers. While there is flooding in the KC area it isn't coming close to the flood of '93, or, God forbid, the '73 flood. The guys on the eastern side of the state have to worry about both the water from the Missouri and the rains going into the northern Mississippi river. I hope things remain tame in comparison to '93. Good luck, my brothers.

EEEK!!!!
He's riding a wheelie. This is a precursor to a new extreme sport. Soon they'll be doing back-flips.

Tournament mortality rates?
I think we all agree that there is a small percentage of fish that die no matter whether we are recreational fishing or tournament fishing. The reason we are looking at mortality as it relates to tournament fishing is because the probability of death is higher compared to a recreational angler releasing a bass immediately. If you handle a bass properly and release it immediately you have done all you can to keep it alive. If it dies there wasn't anything else you could have done, except for not fishing at all. On the other hand, fish are not released immediately in tournaments and are sometimes not released for a few hours. Many things come into play such as the water treatment used, the condition in the livewell, the handling and bagging of the fish for the weigh-in, etc. I have nothing against tournaments but due to the visibility from these events I want to make sure we are doing all we can to keep mortality at a minimum, for the fishes sake, and for the future of fishing.

K_Mac, glad to see you on the boards. I feel your pain regarding the Redbirds. We aren't scoring any runs.

Bee Anxiety Continues :/
Speaking of things that we're all afraid of, I know a guy where I work who is afraid of fish! Serious business!! He has a serious case of Ichthyophobia. I can't imagine what my life would be like if I were afraid of fish.
-
Tournament mortality rates?
Avid, you are correct. Twenty percent mortality is completely unacceptable. I haven't read that this is typical, but if there is a tournament circuit that is experiencing this level of fish mortality, I think that circuit's organizers should stop holding tournaments until they determine what is the cause. I've read a couple of articles about fish mortality as it relates to tournaments over the last year and there have been instances of extreme fish kills.

Was I wrong, Ethical question.
Fifty yards!!! Please. You didn't give them enough room! You know that crappie fishermen are known for their long casts with those 1/32 to 1/16 oz jigs.

Loomis 842 - Anything Similiar Out There?
I would say that you can come close for a lot less money. I've used G.Loomis rods and they are sweet, but I don't own any. I think Powell rods, for the money, are a better buy, but then, maybe if I had used G.Loomis more I might sing a different tune. Here's a quote from a tackletour.com test on the Powell 683C rod at http://tackletour.com/reviewpowell683cxfast.html: The MBR783C GLX and the MBR844C GLX list for $335 and $355 respectively on the G.Loomis website. The Powell 683C lists for $169. While a lab test doesn't exactly simulate what happens out on the water, I can say from my experience that the Powell is light, sensitive, and comes very close to the G.Loomis rods I have experienced. Very close may not cut it for some, but considering the price differential, it does for me. I know this doesn't cover the 842 model, but I think if you look hard enough at Airrus, Kistler, and Powell you can find rods that come close for much less money. BTW, Powell has a lifetime warranty also.

Kansas Tornado Pictures
Cart7, go south below Cape Girardeau into the bootheel. I grew up down there and it's flat as a pancake. I saw a number of tornados as a kid. The area is small compared to the state of Kansas, but proportionately I would bet that there are just as many. Speaking of tornados, I guess you've all seen the pictures of Greensburg, KS. Well, technically, there are no pictures of Greensburg because it no longer exists after the F5 wedge tornado nailed it a few days ago. It's been all over the news. The tornado path is 1.4 miles wide through the town. Check the links below. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRCZxsoB1OI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NE9LJ9rNTU&NR=1 http://www.kansas.com/static/slides/050507tornadoaerials/

Criteria for Closing Threads
Thanks for the responses, guys. I'm a happy member. Curiosity sometimes gets the best of me. I thought I had looked at this thread and didn't see a reply button so I assumed it was closed. I was finished with posting to it anyway.
