Few questions about the older Antares AR.
I have 4 of these reels that are 12 to 15 years old. I do not think it would do very well with weights you mentioned but have never tried them. I use Gamma Copoly 12 & 14 lb test. Baits I I use with them are Johnson Spoons, Chatter baits, Spinner Baits & Buzz Baits. As for Saltwater, they are Aluminum so I think you be ok as long as you clean them good after every trip. I fish Fresh water only so I have not had them to Saltwater They are excellent reels enjoy it. Gear Ratio 5.8:1 10 ARB Bearings, VBS Centrifugal Control System, Low mass drilled spool, Super Free System, Bearing Supported Pinion Gear System Click set Dartanium Drag, SVS Brake System, Reel Wt. 8.7 oz

Best Frog Rod/Reel Combo
These are what I am using. Dobyns Champion XP DC 736 FH Rod & a Shimano 22 Bantam XG This is a awesome combination. I am not a big fan of braid so I am using Gamma Polyflex Copolymer 25 lb breaking strength of 42 lbs. They also have 30 & 40 lb with breaking strengths of 51 & 62 lbs. When the bass blows up on my frog my reflex tends have me set the hook way to soon. I have found that I am getting more hook ups than I was. I am thinking that little bit of stretch off sets my reflex some. Anyway I am getting more fish in the boat.

Lower ratio reel
I use a Shimano Curado CU 201 B 38 That works very well for that & deep diving crank baits.

22 JDM Bantam vs 20 JDM Metanium?
I now have 4 Metanium 2020 XG ( 6.3 oz) & 3 22 Bantam XG ( 8oz.) reels. What DVT has said is spot on. I am using the Metanium's on Dobyns Champion Extreme HP DX 744 C FH & 745 C FH for bottom fishing & the Bantam's on Dobyns Champion XP DC 736 C FH for frog fishing. I have been out about a dozen times comparing these 2 reels. With the DX 744C I was Texas rigged with 3/16 & 1/4 oz. bullet weights. The DX 745 C Was set up with Carolina rigs using 1/2 & 3/4 barrel weights. The Bantam was used in heavy cover FROG Fishing & in my opinion is the reel to use when frog fishing. The Metaniums hand no problem what so ever so next time I will increase the weight & fish in heaver cover. Both of these are excellent reels. I did no notice the weight difference & am use to the Shimano Calais CL 201 series. I hoped this helped some

Dc reels
These reels preform just fine when matched with a proper rod & set up properly. Woody B answer is spot on. I will say when I am out there in a 15+ knot wind I line the target so I have at least a 45 degree angle to my target. My DC reels consist of a Antaras Dc & DC-7 & a couple of Calais 201DC'S These have a bit of a learning curve but when dialed in they work great. There draw back is they weigh 9.5 oz. I also have A couple of the 21 Scorpion DC'S which weigh 8 oz. I do not have a problem with distance with these reels.

Best Dobyns Frog Rod?
The Champion XP DC 736 C FH. I have 3 rigged all the time. One with a hollow body, a popping one, & a toad. If the fish misses the frog I cast the toad back to the spot & move like it is wounded. Move it just a little bit than jerk it & let if fall do this a couple of times. If no takers fan cast the area. The rod is a 6 power & has a fast tip so if the fish gets it you should get a good hook set.

Is this this a good deal?
I would pass also. For a multi-purpose rod I would get a 6'10" M/H 3 power rod with a 10 to 17 LB line wt. & a 1/4 to 3/4oz lure wt. Or a 7' Heavy 4 power rod with a 10 to 20 lb line wt. & a 1/4 to a 1 oz. lure wt. either of these rods would be a excellent choice for what you want to use it for. Since you are just starting I would lean toward the M/H rod. I would keep the reel & ask you friend if he has any paper work on the reel or has ever set it up. If not go to the manufactures site & do some research.

How much do you spend a month on tackle?
Are you kidding, I do not keep track because I would probley have another heart attack. I carry very little cash & pay for everything with my cash back credit card which will cover what I spend on tackle for the year.

frog rod ?
I fish heavy cover & use a 6 power rod ( Dobyns Champion XP DC 736 C FH) With a Shimano Bantam xg. ( I have just ordered a couple of the new 22 version). Once you get his head up you have a chance of skimming him across the top of the water. The power of the rod is also helpful setting those frog hooks. I have 3 set ups for a different style of frogs & they work well for me.

When should I use bead on a T-Rig
I use a glass bead every time. I also pull the hook & knot into the head of the worm. In shallow water I like the sound of the worm weight tapping the bead. On a sunny day it will reflect a bit of the sunlight.

22 JDM Bantam vs 20 JDM Metanium?
I am on the same fence as ErieCan. Both Dumbbassanglr & GetFishorDieTryin have made good points. I have several of the 20 Metaniums. I am just waiting what is said about the Bantam.

Single Compartment Container
Take a pencil soldering iron & melt where they are attach to the box & remove.

are you rubbing your soft plastics to dull them?
I would rather spend more time fishing then rubbing plastic worms.

Recommend A New Graphite Square Bill Rod.
Your Words "I’ve just never “taken” to the Dobyns rods." The Champion XP DC 705 CB FH is a very good rod. I have The Champion XP DC 764 CB RM FH & 765 CB FH I also have a Kaden KD 610-4CB FH. These are all excellent rods for cranking. By your statement I am guessing you have had a Dobyns rod or 2 & did not like them. I could not sleep so I decided to give a second chance
