  1. One would use a black crankbait for the same reason they'de use a black jig: It creates a nice profile in darker, stained water. Makes sense to me
  2. One choice word under my breath is enough for me, then onto the next cast and the next fish
  3. There happens to be a guy that goes to my school by the name Justice. Most kids think its a pretty cool name. Not my cup of tea, but to each their own.
  4. I palm the baitcaster as well, 2 fingers above the trigger while casting and 3 above while retrieving (i switch hands...). For the spinning rod, it depends on the technique. For instance, if im dropshotting or using a shakeyhead and have to impart movement, i hold the reel stem between the pinky and ring finger, and hold it at about wait level. For dead sticking, the reel stem is between my index and middle, or middle and ring.
  5. ALBERTO!!! Extremely strong, and relatively easy to tie.
  6. My first skipping bait would be the weightless senko, as i can skip it furthest and most accurate. From there, i go to a weightless fluke. I'm also getting better at skipping a jig, which can be a deadly dock bait. You may also want to consider a fat ika or other beaver rigged backwards as it will glide away from you, further under the dock.
  7. You can fish most of the lures in your tacklebox on a medium action baitcast rod. The only things i WOULD'NT throw on it are: Small/light plastics Techniques using small hooks (drop shot comes to mind) Heavy cover flipping
  8. Contrary to those above, i prefer the floating variety (roboworms especially). I shake it pretty aggresivly and that floating tail realy seems to attract the bass. Im sure both catch fish, i just have more confidence in the floating style.
  9. Have you been hitting the gym lately??? All kidding aside, i have had problems with any brand EWG hooks opening with braided line. Add that with your heavy action rod and that hook bends easier than you think. I have switched to the superline EWG variety and these seem to be less prone to the bending.
  10. x2 plus, they are RAZOR sharp with a fairly thin diameter hook for easy penetration.
  11. Finally got a calm sunday for some fishing on Lake Ontario and attached ponds! We've been getting pounded with wind a 4-5 ft waves all week but the weather finally cleared. Water is still COLD in the lake, maybe low 40s, and the ponds are still down in the 50s. With my new Costa Del Mar 580G shades (AWSOME!), i was able to find some nice offshore structure out in 10-15 FOW and decided to drag a 1/2 oz football jig around and see if any smallies were starting to move up. I ended up just catching one, but it was the biggest smallie i've ever caught! Absolutely thumped the jig and i proceeded to swing for the fences! After a good long fight with a nice jump, I landed her. I couldnt believe how fat she was, absolutely crammed with eggs. Unfortunantly, i didnt have a ruler or scale, but it was 2 hand spans (9" each) plus another 2-3" and heavy! Any estimate on weight??? After spending an hour or so offshore, i decided to go for the green guys in the connected ponds. I ended up with 2 more in the hour before sunset flipping a 1/2 oz blue/black jig. First one, pictured below, came off of a broken reed line and was about 19-20". Other guy came off the end of a fallen tree. All in all, it was a good night of fishing and i can't wait to get on 'em again soon!!!
  12. Buy them all and then sell the ones you dont want at a nice discount to some members on the flea market
  13. Who knows, maybe you got a bad one... Give abu a ring, im sure they would replace it no problem.
  14. I use either 15 or 20 lb powerpro on my spinning setups. The good thing about it is that it floats and is visible on to of the water. This makes strike detection very easy. Also, it casts and handles much better.
  15. I use the "BoatBuckle Rod Bunk Vehicle Rod Carrier" in my jeep cherokee, works great! Sorry, link wont work but can be found at TW under accessories, then rod storage...
  16. Im in the EXACT same predicament, i also have a powerdrive that i need to run a ducer wire down. The best solution i can come up with is the one that you mentions, securing to the bottom and to the top. I dont think you need too much slack though, maybe a few inches to be able to get outside the mount. I may however pop off the head and see what it looks like. I'm just afraid of interference, plus am not sure where the wire would come out at the bottom...
  17. I like fishing a dropshot on outside weed edges. As well, a rattletrap on the edge can be killer, and also rips free of weeds very nicely.
  18. I can fight the wind. But when it starts snowing and you cant feel your fingers
  19. For me, the key to the Senko is to do absolutely NOTHING after the cast. I throw it out (rather, skip under docks and such), let it fall and watch the line. When you think its on the bottom, let it sit a little longer. If you start to get the itch to move it, let it sit longer. Now when your eyes start getting droopy, wait 10 seconds more and then reel in and repeat. While this may be an overexageration, the point is to just let it sit, maybe 10-15 seconds. I use a 5" senko along with a Gamikatsu 1/0 weedless wacky hook rigged right in the middle. Any slight movement, jump, or irregularity of the line is followed by a sweep set.
  20. Any time you add grass to the equation, I believe braid is your #1 choice. The braid will cut through all the vegatation and allow you to haul fish out of the thick nasty in a hurry.
  21. You may want to talk to a mod and see if you can get this moved to the general fishing forum, you will get much more traffic. I hope you guys get a bunch of magazines! Good luck!
  22. I have a 29 ACT, 3.8 GPA, an International Baccelaureate diploma candidate (AP on steroids) and 350 hrs community service. Problem is, none of it matters as i just realized i sent my application in on Nov. 9th and it was due on the first... I ended up in the 3d wave of students to be looked at and by that time they had no more space available. I feel like such an idiot.... On a brighter note, i will be fishing for RIT up here in NY and they will be sending me to some FLW events, plus, im getting free tuition. At least i KNOW i will be able to fish tournaments at RIT rather than have to compete with a ton of members just to get into a tournement in Florida. I will see how everything works out and transferring is not off the table by any means, but I am excited to go to RIT for at least the first year.
  23. I try to cast diagonally towards the bank when first starting. This way, you can run the crank down following the bottom contour, but it is a more gradual depth increase than if retrieving perpendicular to the bank. After catching a few fish, you can determine what depth they are at by patterning when each fish hit in relation to where the lure was during the retrieve. After determining depth, you can than cast parralel to the bank/contour at that depth, keeping your crank at the optimal depth for a longer time.
  24. I realy enjoy the craw fatty on a jig when im looking for a bigger profile. As well, it makes a jig skip very well due to how wide and flat it is. Only negative is that usually only 1 of the craws will flap at a time... The pit boss has awsome action and is also a good addition to a punch skirt. I'm also liking the looks of the smash tube, just havn't had the time to fish it.
  25. I drive a white jeep cherokee if you consider that a truck.
