  1. Thanks catchnm! Mine works really well, I had to add a trailer hook because the rubber is so stiff it gets in the way. I just barely stick the point in the tips of one of the toes to keep it weedless. Mine also has a white belly, maybe that made a difference.
  2. Today the ratio was about 10 to 1, maybe even higher. They were in the weeds and would take multiple swings. If they didn't get hooked, I just wait a couple of minutes and toss it right back to them. Sooner or later, they eat it. For me, a frog bite is just about as good as it gets. It is frustrating and exhilarating all at once.
  3. I got into some good topwater frog action at the lake today, it would have been better, but the weather turned and I had to leave. I will fish in rain and wind, but draw the line at hail and vertical lightning. Is there a better way to start a day?
  4. I have googled and looked on ebay, and not seen any that look like it. It may have been a local or regional product, I have no clue. I wish I had 4 more of 'em, though. Plenty heavy to cast with a bailcaster too, not like light the other frogs when I bought it.
  5. Sac-a-lait, or white perch. Don't ask me why, they aren't perch and they aren't white.
  6. The dorsal fin connection looks to be too small for a spot, but it is hard to really tell. Does he have a rough spot on his tongue, or lines on the white part of his belly? To help see the color pattern, try puttting a bass (in water) in a white plastic container and look down at his back. A spot will have blotchy green spots on his back, like a camo pattern. The white container helps show the color differences.
  7. I haven't tried the RT frogs yet, but I am very pleased with the YUM turbo frogs. They are really durable too.
  8. I found some cheap A-Rigs online today. They have minor defects, but much cheaper than at BPS. They also have blank lures if you like to paint your own. http://wlure.com/product_info.php?products_id=556
  9. I saw this lure while I was taking pics of my old frog. I thought some of you might get a kick out of it. I got it in 1984, and it started out as a silver/black, but after a while, it had almost no paint left. It has taken the lives of hundreds of stripers, and even caught a few bass. It still produces, loking just like this: I'm not sure if they can read, but it can't hurt.
  10. I have had this guy for a while. One of the legs finally came off his twin brother, leaving me with just one. I don't remember the brand name or even where I got them. Anybody recognize this guy? The Live Target frog is for size reference. Thanks.
  11. I have 2 old Poe's wooden crankbaits, and 2 luhr-jensen hot lips (orange belly with the dark brown and black back). For the life of me, I don't know why they stopped making that color of hot lips, unless smallmout populations were being depleted. Back in the 80's, they changed the way Zara Spooks were constructed, making them slimmer and heavier in the back end. It made it easier to cast and make it walk, but won't sit in one place like the old ones. I can make an old one work for over a minute without pulling it any further than a foot out.
  12. I have caught them with rusty lures hanging in their mouths, and found nasty old jigs inside their stomachs. There was even a pike up on the Little Mo. River who we saw for two years swimming around with a spinnerbait hanging from his mouth. They can take a lot. I would give your fish a 50/50 shot at dying as a result of ingesting your hook. He could very well have been caught and kept by the next boat to come along. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, there are worse things you can do in life than killing a fish; like overseasoning filets or frying them in grease that isn't up to proper temperature. If you fish long enough, you will make plenty of mistakes, many worse than this one.
  13. If I had to pack just one, I would have to go with a good 7' graphite composite spinning rod and pair it with a quality reel with some extra spools. That way you could fish with 4 or 6 lb mono, or up to 20 or 30 lb braid. That covers a lot of bases with one setup. Sure, there's a lot of stuff that rig won't do, but the list of stuff it can do is longer thn the list of stuff it won't. Back when I used to do 2-3 week floats down the Buffalo, I carried two setups like that. I made plenty of trips where I never even set up rod #2.
  14. Wow, look at all these happy folks who got free hooks! Big thanks to Brand0n for the OP!
  15. The boat plan I'm going with is this: https://www.boatdesigns.com/20-Sweet-Caroline-dory-_-skiff/products/543/ My finished boat will look much like this with the exception of a raised front casting deck and a pole platform in the rear.. I need something that can fish local reservoirs, rivers, marsh, and even Lake Pontchatrain in the big water. Not too many designs can do that, so I decided to make it myself. As you can tell by the picture, putting the poles on the rear would involve some major redesign and balance considerations for the boat. I would be interested in putting them in if they were really worth it, I just need some user testimony from regular people (not paid spokes-folks) who own them and use them.
  16. I have hit that box a couple of times now, and today they din't have much. I scored a thug and a shad rap rs there before. What is left are some big striper minnows, I want them, but I also know no one else ever buys those. Eventually, they will mark them down to $2 and I'll get a couple.
  17. A scrounger with a matrix shad trailer is a killer. I haven't tried a craw trailer yet, but it looks like it works. Nice catch!
  18. I have used the Wee Frog and Teeny Wee Frog for a while now. You really never know what is going to hit them. They work really well on bayous and ponds.
  19. Craigslist is a good start, then go check the pawn shops. If you give them a pic they can look for it and maybe even help catch the person who brings it in. By local, I mean local to the place it was stolen. Thieves don't usually travel too far with their loot, unless you are near a state line. If that is the case, go straight to the shops in the adjacent state. Also. report it stolen with the local PD, every pawned item generates a pawn ticket that is put into a database and checked against stolen property, the database is usually just in-state, so items taken across state lines never cross-reference.. It doesn't usually work, but sometimes people get lucky, especially with unique items. I hope you get your stuff back.
  20. I got a pack of 2/0 EWG worm hooks, just what I needed. Free is good...
  21. Not to jack the thread, but could someone familiar with these things clue me in on how they are better than just using fore and aft anchors? I fish from a kayak or canoe right now, but have plans to build my own fishing boat, and I will need to accomodate these things into my design if they are really that good. On my first two bass rigs, I always kept an anchor up front, as well as one at the back. They seemed to do the job pretty well, except when I was on offshore structure in heavy wind, and I don't think these poles go down far enough for that anyway.
  22. Sunburned hands and raccoon facial tan lines.
  23. I got a free Loomis hat at the Classic Expo. I haven't worn it yet, but if it means I gotta buy one of those rods, then forget it. I got a free Yamaha t-shirt at the weigh-in, and I like to wear it fishing out of the kayak. That way, I really do have a Yamaha motor. The hat I really want is one to match my Ted Williams baitcaster that I still fish with.
  24. I picked up a standard Lightning Rod on sale at Wal-Mart for $10. It is a 7' medium spinning rod, and so far, it is great, especially considering the price. I paired it with an Okuma Avenger (also on sale, but at Cabela's). I still fish with a LR from the early 90's, a 6' MH baitcaster.
