  1. Judging exactly when to head back to the dock before we get drenched.
  2. If this was the case, how is it that musicians can play a piano, or drums or a guitar using both hands? If the non-dominant hand wasn’t able to perform “finesse” techniques, they wouldn’t play very well.

    Egg$!

I eat a lot of eggs and went to the Sam’s Club to get more. They had none! WalMart was totally out except for some jumbos that were $6.82 a dozen! I sure hope they can do something about this bird flu epidemic soon!
  4. Back in the day, spinning reels came with spare spools. There was no superlines back then and mono got so twisted up, I like having spare spools to quickly replace damaged line. I kept buying Quantum spinning reels so I’d have multiple spare spools that would fit all my reels. I always liked those Quantum’s and still do, even if they don’t come with spare spools anymore. Now that I’m not using mono anymore, I don’t need the spare spools anymore anyway.
  5. I’m using Cabelas Guideware too but I’m not a big fan of the free ad for Cabelas on the back of the jacket as is shown in A-Jay’s post above.
  6. Chicago is a great tourist destination but like any major city, it’s not the best place to live. I lived in the suburbs and worked in the city and surrounding area for 40 years. Too much of my life was spent sitting in traffic and too much of my money was spent on high real estate taxes, and parking.
  7. I love braid on my spinning reels. ALL spinning reels twist line. Mono and FC lines behave very poorly when twisted and braided line is much more tolerant to being twisted. I’ll agree with the other posters, Sufix 832 is good stuff.
  8. True Ned rigs use very light, 1/8 oz jigs or less which may be too light for a medium spinning reel, but heavier jigs will catch fish too. I throw top water baits on my medium spinning reels a lot, but heavier baits like a Whopper Plopper are best suited for a bait caster. Lots of shallow running crankbaits can be used with spinning gear, while deep running baits have a lot more resistance and are tougher to retrieve on spinning tackle. As has already been said, use the weight rating on the rod as a guide, then experiment on your own to see how the rods fish with different lures.
  9. I hope by now the original poster found a rod. That first post was from over 9 years ago!
  10. I don’t do many road trips anymore, but I quit going south (from the Chicago area) several years ago. There were just too many fishermen and too few fish. Going north, there are so many lakes it spreads out the fishing pressure and there aren’t many bass fishermen. Big bass aren’t as big as their southern cousins but there are significantly more fish to be caught. I also like the availability of on the water accommodations where you park your boat right behind your cabin. You only launch your boat just once for your entire stay unless you want to fish multiple bodies of water. The water level fluctuations of reservoirs mean on the water lodging is nearly nonexistent. The season is shorter up north, but you can fish in comfort all day as summers there are much cooler.
  11. I never use a mono or fc leader for any technique. I don’t fish a drop shot a lot but I spent a week in the fall using one every day. I’ve never had a circumstance where I had an issue that would have been better if I’d been using a leader.
  12. I’ve got an iPhone 15 Pro Max and although they are waterproof, if it falls overboard in 10 feet of water, it’s good as lost. That’s not a risk I’m willing to take for a fish picture. That camera I posted about above takes great fish pictures and if I lose it over the side, it’s not such a major loss.
  13. Which free streaming service do you use? To get the channels I actually want to watch along with local channels, I have to pay.
  14. For the most part, losing a fish I was just going to let go anyway doesn’t bother me much. Part of the excitement in catching big smallmouth is knowing that you aren’t going to land 100% of them, no matter what you do. One fish that still has me angry was a big pike that I caught while fishing with a native guide on Great Slave Lake in the NWT of Canada. Early on, I got my first big pike of the trip and the guide was trying to bring my fish in the boat. With a leather glove on, he stuck his fingers in the eye sockets of the big fish, which unsurprisingly, the fish didn’t like. He quickly spun out of the weak grip the guide had on him, and was gone. I never let the “guide” touch another fish I caught the rest of the week. I never lost another fish due to landing them on that trip.
  15. Boat registration is $25/year. Registration for the trailer for a year is $109
