  1. I received a few of these in a lot of tackle and was wondering if anyone has used them before. I won't be complaining about the price I paid for them, I'm just curious if I should make room for them in my tackle box or not. Thanks in advance!
  2. That pesky money has been on my back like a nagging boss at work the last couple of weeks. He started with tricking me into ordering a bunch of bearings for my reels that *needed* to be upgraded. Then he snuck a 1000 size Symetre into my eBay cart and pushed the snipe-it button http://www.ebay.com/itm/400876968922?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT Then I stumbled onto this pair of gems: http://www.ebay.com/itm/141603739193?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AITThis particular monkey attack was completely unprovoked but nevertheless very much appreciated. Though both of these cost me money, I consider them good investments. I actually think I'll have the monkey check out my stock portfolio to see if it needs some diversifying...
  3. I like the idea, especially fishing them at night. To further your objective of rating them, I would say give them 4 or 5 rods from each price range without identifying which rods represent which price ranges and have them rate each one in a few areas. I think that would be very telling.
  4. The only thing I can think of you potentially noticing, whether by how it fishes or just visually, is if it's a very light, parabolic blank and you notice the potential dead spot in the blank where the 2 pieces join. That's assuming it should still bend at that point along the blank.
  5. So to generally summarize: the warmer it gets, bass want a more active, erratic bait...? Generally speaking of course...
  6. That's not propaganda, those are the cold (!), hard facts!!!
  7. My (likely flawed) thinking was that with more guides for the line to torque against, that would engage more of the blank and in turn create more resistive force against the torque trying to twist the rod. Does all of the torque force originate at the tip top?
  8. I have a sneaky suspicion you're going to enjoy that reel regardless of which rod you pair it with! I picked up a few more jerkbaits (2 Storm Twitchin' Sticks, 1 GYCB and a Strike King) plus a bag of green pumpkin super flukes and a bag of watermelon chartreuse trick worms, plus some 30# Super 8 Slick for the PX68L I have coming from Japan. I also lucked into an Ito Shiner, an RC STX, a McStick, and 5 Rapala Xraps on the boards for a song. The stinking spring better get here fast or I'm going to need some more tackle organizers and another bag and then my wife will really be asking me if all of this is necessary. The real problem comes when she makes the call to the funny farm for a one way pick up... LOL!
  9. Would lighter powered rods then lend themselves that much more to a spiral wrap? I started thinking about this when I was looking into a ML baitcasting rod and also saw Tom Kirkman's demonstration of a spiral wrap vs a traditional guides-on-top rod when loaded. To take it a step further, would an extra guide or two out towards the tip help to minimize this tendency? I realize adding a guide or two is counter to the logic of a simple spiral and being able to delete a guide or even two, but if it helped overall rod function...? @ Angry John: sorry about the irony of me hijacking your thread that was started with the intent of not hijacking another...
  10. I just had a friend of mine order a PX68L and a TD-Z 100ML US Trail for me from Japan. I'll be using the PX68L for jerkbaits and the TD-Z for mid-deep cranks.
  11. My understanding is that they look like they're dying suspending that way... I think.
  12. DVT: As wall thickness and blank diameter decrease, the force required to twist the tip of the rod away from neutral (guides and tip top all in line) decreases making it easier to twist, won't it...? My thinking is that with lighter powered rods that get into their backbone slower, this would be that much more evident. I have nothing aside from a hunch to back this train of thought up... FishinDaddy: I'm worried less about breakage and more about the actual science/art behind rod building. Thank you for the explanation!
  13. How does rod torque change as rod power and action decrease? Aside from the rod wanting to twist in your hand, does the tip end of the rod twist relative to the grip...?
  14. Anyone in Buffalo, NY area? I'm starting to wonder if it might be time to take a little road trip...
  15. That and keeping the tackle monkey satisfied, right...? I already bought more jerkbaits than I had originally intended, plus I know there will be a purchase or twelve at the upcoming fishing shows in the next couple of weeks... He's a cheeky monkey I tell ya. While we're on the topic, what do you look for in a jerkbait reel? Weight? Line capacity? Retrieve ratio?
  16. Do all those baits have different enough actions and tendencies to make a discernible difference in how and when you catch fish with them? What are the differences?
  17. Using backing allows you to fill the spool which keeps your IPT up in the higher end of the reels range. Otherwise, the reel won't retrieve as fast with a half full spool.
  18. If typo is short for prototypo, the yes. It's just in the beginning stages, but everything is pointing in a very positive direction so far! In all seriousness, I just goofed a bit. I meant to type 100 SP.
  19. Thanks for all the help guys! I decided to pull the trigger on a few lures now rather than wait around. This is what I picked up: 2 Jackall SM 115 SP's, one each in Matte Pearl White and Aurora Black 1 Jackall SM 92 SP in Matte Pearl White 1 Lucky Craft Pointer 120 SP in Flake Male Gill I Duo Realis 120 SP in Ghost Minnow 2 Rapala XR10's, 1 each in Perch and Clown 3 Rapala XR8's, 1 each in Silver Blue, Glass Ghost and Olive Green 1 Rapala XRS6 in Olive Green 1 Rapala XRS8 in Yellow Perch I already had the Rapala's but I didn't get around to using them last season. Now if this weather would kindly make itself scarce, all would be good...
  20. Care to send me that info Matt? Thanks!
  21. I feel your pain, my season ended early this year due to a move so I've been accumulating since October... Luckily my wife also fishes and has only asked (so far!) if she was going to be using some of the new stuff too I'm looking forward to picking up a jerkbait or 6 and trying that out, plus I picked up some crankbaits already so I'm looking forward to messing around with those too. Lastly, I picked up some drop shot stuff so that'll be my other other new thing to try out this coming season.
  22. He can use what ever he wants for line, yes, absolutely. However, I was giving him the option of using lighter line without sacrificing strength while gaining casting distance. Had he prefaced his topic with, "All I have is 30# braid", my answer would have been very different. But since he said he's looking at trying out 30# braid on a spinning reel, I took this to mean he would have to buy the line. If that's the case, he could buy 15 or 20# rather than 30#.
  23. Thanks for the replies, I really appreciate your input! Except for the slightly off topic line recommendation, I'm good there, thanks... Also, just to nip this in the bud, I won't be replacing any treble hooks with Mustads...
  24. I wouldn't use 30#, that's really heavy braid for a spinning reel. 20# at the most, but 10 or 15# will be fine. Last year all I used was 15# super 8 slick and either a fluorocarbon or mono leader and was perfectly happy with that setup.
