  1. I have no idea where I got 'poodle tail' but I thought everybody would know what I am talking about, lol. Before my fishing hiatus, when I was bigtime into fishing decades ago, the internet didn't exist. Now, in less than a month, I have a bazillion code words to google and learn about. People use a ton of acronyms and jargon about any subject these days. What the heck, poodle tail is sexier than split grip. If I were making rods, that's what I would call it, lol. Marketing 101.
  2. I had to go look at my rod, lol, the image of the Berkley Shock online did not show a split grip. Forget poodle tail, call it split grip, lol. I been out of fishing for quite awhile, lol. Anyway, my rod does have the split grip and I'm guessing it is 10" from the butt end of the rod to the shaft of the reel that hangs down. I mentioned St. Croix; apparently people do have preferences on this because they do offer different length handles. I can see why you would need long for generating leverage throwing a bait a very long way. I can throw my frog a LONG way with my 7.5' Cashion MH and Lew's TP reel by using a two-hand cast. Other than that, a long handle kinda gets in the way.
  3. I note that St. Croix spinning rods have various length end handles. The poodle tail designation has to do with modern rods having that skinny section and then the bulb end, like a poodle dog's manicured tail.
  4. I am new to using a spinning rod. My Berkley Shock 7' rod has what I see is called a poodle-tail end. The part below the reel is too long for my liking, it sometimes snags on my shirt. Is this normal, lol? I might need to find something with a shorter end section. Why so long?
  5. I am buying a bass boat registered in Arkansas and I live in neighboring Louisiana. I think to have everything all well here, I will have to register the boat with the DWF for the boat numbers and register the trailer with DMV. I think I will need a bill of sale. Does anyone have any idea... my gf in LA is a notary. Could I get her to do the notary part or would I need an AR notary?
  6. I bought a Pfleuger President 6940 reel for $60 and a Berkley Lightning Rod Shock 7' Med for $40 from Walmart. That rod is $50 at BPS. I like the combo. I recall that the Shock rod is supposedly designed for Superline braid, which is what I have on it.
  7. I see people mention black/blue color combo often. Jigs. I had a buddy who for many years used only that in a plastic worm. I see it mentioned a lot on craw plastics. I don't think crawfish are black and blue. Why does black/blue work? Is it just more easily seen in certain water conditions?
  8. There are so many baits these days, when I started eons ago there was just a worm! What is your favorite soft plastic? I have been doing well on flukes. Now trying Ned rig and want to try craw baits or creature baits. Curly tail worms, whatever! Have you found anything that really made you happy?
  9. What do you think is the best craw color? Mostly for dingy water. Our lakes are not very clear most of the time.
  10. He was using what line? And what does shacking mean, biting the bait? And steelhead, you mean trout?
  11. I put Seagur Red Label fluorocarbon 20 lb line in my shopping cart at Academy just to consider it and I forgot about it and I bought it at ring-up time and I didn't want to waste time for a refund. I have never used FC line, just wanted to try it. Not even sure how heavy to go. Is this brand FC line considered any good? I fish mostly soft plastics and use pretty heavy braid due to cover in the lakes I fish.
  12. I am probably 90% soft plastics. Other would be spinnerbaits, frogs.
  13. Is this it -- http://www.***.com/Lunker_City_Belly_Weight/descpage-LCBW.html-- It seems to me that would hang up real bad on cover. It's interesting in that the hook I was wanting to modify is a Lunker City product, Texposer worm hook -- http://www.***.com/Lunker_City_Texposer_Worm_Hook_5pk/descpage-LCTEXPO.html .
  14. is this it -- http://www.doalures.com/product-p/65-200.htm ?
  15. Say you have a favorite hook and want to attach a weight to the shank to rig it Texas style so that the weight is under the worm and will make it fall horizontal. To make a weighted hook that would look kinda like this -- http://moanerhooks.com/product/the-weighted-stroker/. I could just add a sliding worm bullet weight but that would not allow the bait (such as a craw) to fall horizontally.
  16. We fish lakes with an occasional large bass but don't focus on them; mainly, more interested in numbers (small to average size). What size hook/bait would you think would be best to try?
  17. I recently am getting back into fishing after fishing a lot back in the 60s - 80s, my youth. Now, I notice horrific problems with aquatic vegetation. Making some places unbearable that were fine back when. I am thinking this is just a natural thing going on with man-made reservoirs. Eutrophication I guess it is. I suppose building lakes is a modern thing, generally less than 100 years old. The wildlife people try this and that on the more popular lakes. Drawdowns, chemicals, etc. But I note that the small reservoirs I fish are just not much fun. Some due to coontail or hydrilla or giant salvinia but some not due to the larger vegetation but with all of the nuisance slimy moss / algae. I wish there were a solution. We had one medium size lake around here get a total do-over a couple years ago. I am going to go out there and see how it has fared. I wonder if a man-made lake just have to get a do-over every 50 years or so to stay healthy and fishable? Have you found this to be around your location?
  18. Wayne, can you provide some detail on how one can chart a lake to produce a contour map for private use? How do you grid the lake, how far apart is each pass and how do you know what line to take, does it guide you? Do you use this with primary motor or troll motor? How long would it take to chart, say, a 100 acre lake?
  19. What does BPS call their Shroom jigheads?
  20. I was using 832 Sufix!
  21. What do the higher end Humminbirds do that the Helix SI and DI with GPS won't do? What is the difference? Thanks.
  22. After having been out of fishing for many years, it's amazing all of the products I don't know about. That's interesting.
  23. HEY! I just got in the Mann's Reel'N Shad bait, which has a weedless hook! This might work.
  24. I seem to recall reading a way to make Zman or other salty baits float better. Like squeeze them in the water? Anyone know?
  25. I see it has a "2" on it -- do you know is that a #2 hook or 2/0? They make both. Those barbs on the shank would pick up moss. I guess I could squeeze them down with pliers.
