I like to hook the dreamshot by inserting the point of the hook into the nose and then out. Like if you were going to texas rig it.

Interesting. I can see how rigging it that way would keep the front 1/2 up more. I am going to try that and see if it makes a difference!!

Are you nose hooking the bait?

    Yep

I agree with BobP. Give his advice a try. Putting the tag end through the eye of the hook again does make it stiffer, for the lack of a better word. I use dreamshots and haven't had a problem with it hanging straight down. It does droop abit but just the slightest movement makes it dance.

I will have to see if I did that. I believe I did but now I'm second guessing myself.

I tie dropshot hooks with a Palomar knot and then insert the tag end of the line through the hook eye and down to the weight.  That makes the hook stand out perpendicular to the line.  It also pulls the knot inside the eye to give it a little extra protection.  No problem with the plastic drooping down parallel to the line when I do this.

I don't have a problem with the hook staying perpendicular. The hook; when bare, stands completely perpendicular to the line. Nice 90 degree angle. However, when I add that Dreamshot, it goes completely limp - even in the water.

I expected it to stand off the line more and have some action to it. It just looks...dead.

  4. Disclaimer: I'm new to rigging dropshots!

I recently took the warming trend as an opportunity to work on my rigs - since I haven't got my boat out yet. Upon rigging my first drop shot, I saw something that seemed to be an issue in my mind. Before I get into the details of that, let me explain my setup so we're all on the same page.

Hook: Size 1 Gamakatsu EWG split/dropshot
Weight: 1/4oz pencil dropshot sinker (locally made)
Bait: StrikeKing Dreamshot 4" (Green Pumpkin for what it matters)

So the issue is the Dreamshot seems to almost be too heavy. While the hook is completely perpendicular to the line, once I add the Dreamshot, it lies completely parallel (against the line). This is to be somewhat expected out of water but it does the same thing in water. I guess I expected it to remain a little more perpendicular with more action. It seems just kind of...flacid.

I am not sure if I am doing something way wrong or if I should look at a more buoyant worm....

    Regards,

    Rick

Muddy or dirty water means decreased visibility for the fish as much as it is for you.

Taking the visualization of your presentation out of the equation, you have to account for other means to attract fish - noise, vibration, deflection, and heavy water displacement. When vision is inhibited, the bass have to rely more on their lateral line. That's why they tend to stick around cover more and that's why you need a lure that doesn't rely on being seen.

Yes also would love for the bass to magically appear in the live well as well as some lead in them so they way 20 pounds im trying to gain knowledge obviously why i asked .... An I am not going in blind but thanks

Perhaps the way you worded your original post confused some members. Instead of implying you have no idea what to throw; which is what your post does, lets start over. What do you plan on throwing? Have you fished there before? If so, what did you have tied on? Did it work?

just need some ideas of key baits i should have for a lake with alot of little islands and a max depth of 35 feet

Like anything in life, trying something new is generally not ideal when there's something on the line. Leave that to practice. My only advice is to ensure you have lures that can reach every level of that 35ft water column if you need it.

  8. I also do not agree with the "pampering" of our children. Life is filled with lessons at every turn. One of which being..falling on your fricken ass. The lesson learned in picking yourself up, and learning what put you there, is invaluable. Being defeated, losing, not getting a trophy, etc... are all lessons toward succeeding.

As for baseball, nope, I can't watch it anymore. Don't worry, basketball is worse (NBA anyways).

It shouldn't be much longer A-Jay. I'm hoping to get out sometime next week on St Clair.

I'm going crazy waiting. Like I told A-Jay, our snow blowers and lawn mowers are playing musical chairs in our sheds!!

What's the better drop shot bait Yum warning shot or Strike King dream shot?

I haven't used either but I did get some SK Dream Shot bags over the winter. I just gotta wait for the weather to cooperate so I can try them out!

  10. Well I certainly appreciate the responses. Regardless of whether one views them as a beginner lure or not, I'm glad we can agree on one thing - they catch fish. In the end, as an angler, that's the real goal anyways. If we can use this lure to help teach and infatuate new anglers, and we can catch fish ourselves, it's definitely a lure you'll see in my box.

Cheers..and like always, tight lines gents! (Or should I say in-line) ;)

I have been pleasantly surprised by all of the positive replies, where I live if you mention that your using a spinner people will just roll there eyes and mark you as a beginner.

I'm a self-proclaimed beginner so comments regarding such wouldn't phase me.

What I don't understand is why they are viewed as a beginner lure? I mean, yes, I can see that they're a little easier to use but nothing we throw in the water is automatic. Unless theres a bobber tied on, control of the lure is still needed. Retrieve speed, water column depth, etc.. are all things an angler still has to take into account. No different than fishing a spinnerbait.

In the end, if it produces, I can't see myself directly or indirectly labeling someone for using it.

    Interesting topic none-the-less I suppose.

I've caught plenty of bass on panther Martin's, they're the main inline spinner I throw other than blue foxes.  I was reading a article last night on spinners since I'm trying to get into trout fishing more.  One point in the article was that most small and hairless spinners are geared towards trout, while larger spinners or the ones with hair are more favored toward bass, pike, etc.

That actually makes a lot of sense!

The inline spinner is definitely the most effective multi species lure, I have personally caught nine different species of fish on it.  I doubt it was created specifically for trout, I think it was probably just made to catch fish.  It's not often mentioned on this site because it's somewhat considered a beginner's lure, even though there are a number of people that use it, they usually don't talk about it for fear of ridicule.

Oh... well, now I'm off to delete this thread!

I have caught MANY bass with a Mepps.  When I was young, on lazy days I would toss one behind my trolling motor equipped Jon Boat and troll the lake we lived on.  It was shockingly effective.

Very effective. My top 5 have been caught on the BlueFox Vibrax series or a Mepps #5 Red/White Aglia. Just thought it odd that I rarely hear of Mepps on here and I've never heard anyone mention BlueFox (albeit I've only been a member for less than a month). Started thinking I was the only one in the world bass fishing with spinners! lol

  14. So at my local bait shop, they have all of the inline spinners (Mepps, BlueFox, etc..) under the trout section. I've never paid much attention to the section labeling. If it catches bass, I wouldn't care if if it was in the Dolphin section. However, I started gearing up for some trout fishing plans I have and it appears a lot of the inline spinners are geared toward trout. Couple that with the fact that very rarely have I seen Mepps mentioned at all on this site.

Again, I'm going to continue using them as they produce numbers and quality (my PB was on an orange BlueFox Vibrax) but is it in fact a trout-oriented lure? Or just a true multi-specie?

    Curious :D

  15. I would say that they're still in prespawn phase. Like stated above, once you hit that 55-60 window consistently, then I would start thinking spawn. Also, like Mr. Netfish and Chill says, definitely hit those lilly pads.

The lake is pretty large! It is about 100 acres big all together but some parts you can not fish because of the vegetation, you'd need an airboat! Haha

Since you won't provide the lake name, how about the city it's in? Heck, even a state would suffice. B)
