I am going to give the skirted jig (bottom contact) an honest effort on the Smallies this year .... Thanks. PS: Many years ago, i thought the only thing to catch smallmouth was an Avocado Color Tube.

Interesting .... Are you using a skirted Jig? What size?

I agree with A-Jay and desmobob on skirted jigs vs. a tube. I rarely use a skirted jig on smallmouth unless i am swimming it. I do however, use a non-skirted jig and craw more often than not.

No separate battery, they run of the cranking battery. I have cables if I need to get a jump off a trolling motor battery but i have not required to do this as of yet.

5" would see the most action from me .... Weightless Wacky and Texas Rigs 4" (Drop Shot) and 6" (Flipping) are in my arsenal though.

I have not applied Spike It or JJ's Magic to any Hard Baits. I would agree with your results, would not stick well. I do however use permanent markers on Hard Baits to add a little color, normally red or orange under the chin. I also write the model and running depth on the Hard Bait as well .... this adds color at the same time. I hope this helps.

I would think you would have a similar outcome to Spike-It markers on soft plastics ....
