  1. This winter I bought myself a dedicated jerk bait combo. Nothing special, I bought the Shimano SLX 6'10" Med Extra Fast action and went with the SLX 8.2:1 reel with 10# SUNLINE SUPER FC SNIPER. I was thinking this would be a good setup for some topwater baits as well. I would assume poppers would be fine. Would buzz baits be OK or with it being a single, larger hook (compared to trebles) to I need a rod with more "umph" to drive a hook home? My last question revolves around using this combo for walking baits like Vixens, Evergreen Shower Blows and such. They are treble hook baits but more stout and beefier hooks compared to a jerk bait so I was curious if this would be the rod for this or again something with more power? What is an ideal rod/line type/reel speed for walking baits anyway?
  2. I'm tired of always having to run up to BPS to put line on BC reels so I am going to attempt to do it myself. I've got a few questions to make sure I do it right, do not mess up the line and do not needlessly waste a lot of time doing it incorrectly. I think this would be a lot less complicated if I was not going to use backing on all of them. I guess my first question is what to back with? I have read a ton on here about cheap mono but also some points about braid making a better backing. For these reels I plan on having a main line of FC from 10-20 pound or 40-65 braid. For main lines such as that should I go with a specific test of line? On YouTube I see most people suggest an arbor knot to the reel, is that the most common? Does it matter if the spool does or does not have any holes or anything to tie to? If I use braid do I want to use the little electrical tape trick? Lastly what knot do I want to use the connect the backing to the main line? Does the knot type depend on what type of backing and what type of main line?
  3. I have always wondered about this. Areas up north that bass season does not start until late in the year. How do they police it? I could legitimately be fishing for crappie and catch a bass, am I now in trouble? Is it that you just cannot keep any until May 11th? Just curious.
  4. Why do you feel the DC is better for frogs? Casting distance?
  5. Isn't there supposed to be a somewhat industry standard, like 10 pound mono or something?
  6. Probably a silly question but does the 150 and 200 numbers refer to yards? Or is it a size or weight deal? I assume yards capacity of whatever test line they work off of but I figured it better to ask them just assume LOL
  7. One way to find out...
  8. Just as an FYI in the Curado K the 7 has an IPT of 31" and the 8 has an IPT of 36".
  9. Based upon a lot of guys recommendations here I decided on the Dobyns Champion 735C, now to get a reel for it. I am now looking for a reel for this jog/frog rod. I am leaning towards either a Curado K or a Curado DC but I can figure that part out. My question concerns the gear ratio to go with. I am considering the 7 or the 8. I hear a lot of guys say you want the 7 geared reel because it would offer you more power/torque to horse a fish out of slop when froggin or prevent it from getting into a brush pile when fishing a jig. I would think that is more done with the rod but people say the reel is of importance as well. Others say the 8 geared reel is better because you can take up more excess line quicker which is helpful because the bait is moved more with the rod. IDK, I can understand how the 7 might have more power but I can see how taking up that excess line would be ideal. Which is the best route to go here?
  10. I have one last question before I were to buy this Champion DC 735C as my jig/frog rod. I have a Champion DC 734C and it is pretty well accepted that it is the most versitle rod in the lineup. The thing is it is labeled as a heavy and I know I would want more power or more "umph" out of a jig/frog rod than a versatile/universal rod, I would think. The strange thing is the Champion 735C is a MH which in my mind would be a step down in power, obviously. The only other lines he makes a 735C in is the Fury and Sierra line and BOTH are a Mag Heavy, so what gives??? I just wanted to kind of get a little education here and make sure this is the correct rod before I buy it.
  11. The main thing is he has never fished jigs and pitched lay down with soft plastics, mostly because fear of spool control and back lashing. He can cast normally with a baitcaster no problem but this style of presentation is new and somewhat intimidating to him, I think. I thought a Curado DC would eliminate that fear but now I'm getting conflicting info and obviously don't want to go and buy it for him if it isn't going to help in this situation anyway.
  12. Assuming you have a Curado DC maybe you (or someone else) can help me with this question that I had not thought of. I read on a different website this evening that my plan of getting him one so he can pitch without real fear of backlash might not work. I read that when pitching you would not get the "RPMs" up enough of the spool for the DC to engage. Meaning to pitch a jig with it even on setting 4 that is supposed to allow you to skip and such that it would work like a "normal" reel at that point to where even though it is a DC real you would not get any of the "lessened backlash"advantages. Can anyone confirm or deny this?
  13. SLX DC would be the smallest (and cheapest) I would imagine.
  14. Wanted to see what all fishing related gifts you guys got today? I've got a ton of pics to upload later!
  15. I am not celebrating Christmas with my wife's side of the family until next week and we still need to get her brother a gift. He has recently gotten back into fishing and so my wife has put it on me to get him a nice gift. Talking to his wife he mentioned wanting to get into jig and frog fishing so I recommended her a rod that would do both so now we are thinking about getting him a reel to go with it. As I have a big spool of Sufix 832 braid I will probably put that on the new reel for him to start. Casting a frog will be no deal but talking to him in the past he has never flipped/pitched a jig or soft plastic and I think he is intimidated by the process and all the potential back lashes. That's what got me thinking about a Curado DC for him because I thought this might eliminate a ton or problems with it. I am thinking the 7.4:1 model with an IPT of 31", is this a good speed for a jig/frog combo? I see the value of being able to take up line quickly but I also figured if I went to an 8 I would lose some power and that this was a good compromise, is this sound logic? But my main question to those who own a DC reel is is my thought process of him being able to set the setting ups to where he could flip/pitch without worrying about massive birdnests a correct one? I know it has a braid setting on it but it seems like setting 4 that helps with skipping would be the route to go? I guess I am just asking to those DC owners could this really simplify the process and make it real user friendly for him?
  16. This is something I may be in the market for soon, a reel to use on a jig/frog combo. What attributes should I be looking for? Is a wide spool a big deal or would a 150 be OK? I was thinking about a 8.x:1 to help get excess line up quicker but should I get something a but slower that might offer me more torque/power?
  17. I've read this reel for some reason has a small handle on it. Been looking at getting one for a jig/frog rod, can anyone point me towards a larger handle option if I were to spring for one?
  18. Yeah, between you gents advice and talking to Gary I'm going to go with the Champion 735C with the split handles. Thanks again!
  19. Hi, I am looking for a new rod to double as my jig (3/8oz to 3/4oz) & pitch soft plastics rod AS WELL as my hollow body frog rod. I was originally looking at their Sierra line and the 735C but now I think my budget would allow me to jump up to their nicer Champion line. Should I look at a Champion 735C too or would you recommend a different model? I guess I should ask what characteristic would you look for in a frog rod and how would it differ from a jig rod? Or do they pretty much share the same characteristics where this is a good idea? Maybe in a perfect world I would have a rod to each presentation but due to budget I would REALLY like one rod to handle both of these presentations.
  20. Looking for a scale sensitive enough to weigh hooks and such and not wanting to spend much on it. Something with an LCD readout on it. I would just look on Amazon but my wife has a similar scale for little packages and when I put a hook on it it does not even register because it is too light so I am sure whatever I bought on Amazon would just do the same thing LOL
  21. Which type would be the "opposite" compared to the 110? Maybe it would be best to buy something different than I already have?
  22. Today I was checking out some Rapala jerkbaits in store, specifically the Rip Stop 12 and the Shadow Rap Deep. The Rip Stop said it was "suspending" and the Shadow Rap said it was "slow sinking." I can certainly understand the difference and I understand there are times that one would work better than the other but what is more of a "traditional" type and which should someone just trying jerkbaits go with? I bought 5 or 6 vision 110s to try but thought I'd try a Rapala too.
  23. If you are wanting to throw a 10XD use what KVD uses himself: https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/catpage-QUANTMRODS.html?from=basres TW has an INSANE sale on them right now for only $80!
  24. You just did.
  25. If you had to pick a 3 hook Rapala jerkbait to fish cold waters in which you'd traditionally throw a jerkbait which model/size would you choose?
