  1. Finally visiting the parents in Salem. Does anyone know places to fish this time of year? I'm guessing trout would be best. I just don't know where I can access the Willamette (overgrown banks) or any sloughs, or if that's the best place to even go. May try a tackle shop next week, I feel lost here. I don't really wanna buy a steelhead permit or whatever, but if I thought I could catch some I would. I'll be here through next week. I'm stuck on the banks. Any ponds, creeks or rivers I could check? I'm in south Salem but willing to drive an hour maybe. Help!!!
  2. There's some clearance, some people might need to shift their weight back on the seat a little though.
  3. Do you like it? It looks so flimsy to me, but I know Greg Blanchard uses something similar. Seems like a lot of stress on the hull where it's connected. But if it works it works. Part of my problem is I don't want to manhandle the yak on a cart up or down any launch ramps. Tendinitis and back issues n such.
  4. Tom answered the question - yes they make noise and bass can hear them. Here is a video of a rattle jig in a bathtub. The camera goes underwater and you can hear it in the video. And it's just swimming not hopping or anything.
  5. My yak would slide too when trying to get it on the cart. Being DIY, I swapped the foam runner pads for rubber pipe insulation which helped a lot. Maybe you can wrap a rubber strip around or along your carts runners to help with grip. Not sure what to use.
  6. I think that Wilderness Systems cart is out of stock everywhere. My DIY PVC one works okay but I don't demand much out of it. It gets the yak from the backyard to the van, that's all I use it for. That WS cart looks very nice though. Try Craigs List for carts. A lot of people like the C-Tug cart. I don't think it's the right choice for me but check that out.
  7. If it were me I would definitely make a big problem for that guy. I'm sure Fed-Ex would appreciate it too, as well as anyone else receiving deliveries from them.
  8. Around here there were obvious Covid crowds at the lakes a year or so ago. Entire families fishing. Now it's back to normal, if not quieter thanks to the drought.
  9. You put all of that in a kayak? 30 pounds of plastics is about 120 bags of 5 inch Senkos (at 11 grams per worm). All that weight would be a good workout!
  10. I should add to my above post that I really do not like loading the yak on the roof this way. It isn't fun. I think one day I will do it wrong and injure myself. Yak is over 100-110 pounds without pedals or seat installed. When I bought it they said it was 85 pounds or so, but that doesn't include the rudder and other hardware that must be mounted after purchase (not the seat or drive).. I'd prefer a trailer, it would take less time on the ramp. The way I do it now it takes me some time to attach the fish finder and all my other gear.
  11. Exactly. "Can you walk faster in those really expensive ones or what?" "Is yellow more comfortable on certain days of the week than the blue ones?" Sounds like she wants you out of the house
  12. I don't usually give people the benefit of the doubt when it comes to litter. I don't think a 12 pack of beer, Strike King bait packaging, cartons of night crawlers where using bait is illegal, dirty diapers, cans of corn and all the other garbage I see just blew away from these poor environmentalist anglers (and that is just in one spot). And it isn't like it blows into trees - it's right where they sit or stand to fish, piled up. I fish largely to get away from people and I find bank fishing to be aggravating in this regard. Just can't get away from the idiots. The kayak helps with that.
  13. According to my FF I can go 4 mph in my Sportsman PDL 106 if I'm pedaling my full strength, with a fully loaded yak. I'd say I can go 3.2 - 3.5 mph at a high cruising speed that I can maintain. My legs need to get in shape too, but at 3.5 mph or so it takes a whole lot more effort to go a very little bit faster. Point of diminishing returns, big time.
  14. Maybe it was on the other side of the tules in the clear water and sounded like it was in the middle of them. Would allow for a bigger animal. If the bank wasn't too far away I'd say possibly a dog and that it just sounded closer than it really was. Sound travels over the water, and I had a conversation once with someone on the other side of the San Joaquin as if we were standing next to each other...well almost. I couldn't believe how easily I could hear him. I've only been "growled" at by catfish there
  15. Why not keep the pedals and add the motor? Or Am I misunderstanding? Maybe it's a money thing? If so then you probably wouldn't go for the Torqeedo I'm guessing. That's what I will do if I ever add a TM to my Sportsman PDL 106. Lift the pedals out of the water when I want to use the motor, cover the hole (optionally) with something made to fit (DIY like I did or buy one), then lower the motor. Or just keep the pedals in the water the whole time (ala Greg Blanchard sometimes). If I add a motor it would only be for getting from point A to point B. I wouldn't want a motor for the smaller adjustments needed when fishing around docks or close to shore. BTW I would mount the motor in the back or front, not where the pedals go. Maybe that's the difference.
  16. If we are talking about so-called civilized Western countries, then no, the world has not come to this, it's mostly just us.
  17. Ya it sounds like it could be a bearing from what I've read, which isn't much. It works fine, not sure it's worth paying to repair. Maybe I will try it myself and learn a thing or two. Thanks guys.
  18. I just did this whole Google Maps creek fishing thing a few days ago. I discovered that one nearby creek is still flowing. Looked it up on a map - it's kind of suburban. Found some places on the map where the creek looked wider and accessible, then figured out how to get there from what looked like a dirt trail best I could. This isn't the most difficult area to explore but it's just an example. There's also a bike path nearby. The entire bike path has Street View, so I could use that to see how the creek looked in some spots. Are there thick trees? Is it too steep? Fences? Then I followed that path on the map to find places I could park my van. I used street view to find trail entrances, even read the street signs, see if parking is allowed, and ended up parking exactly where I planned on the map. I hiked along the creek almost entirely off the path, crashing through branches, sticks, trees, over rock piles. I hiked about 5 - 6 miles overall. Water was gin clear and I saw zero signs of aquatic life. No frogs, guppies, snails, or anything else except for ONE TINY fish or frye, like less than an inch. But I fished anyways. Was a fun day. I met a few people along the way, saw some deer and almost got a thorny branch straight into my crotch. Almost! I was trying to step over it I guess and ended up with a leg on each side, and I was baaaarely tall enough! Then came a moment of deep thought. "Okay, don't panic, but there's a thorny branch between my legs pressing upwards on my pants. Think very carefully about your next move, Mike" Made it home in one piece, tired, sore, fishless and that was fine.
  19. I have an exploded view of this reel so I think I'm using the correct terms (I'm no reel expert). Not sure if it is this exact one: https://www.ereplacementparts.com/pflueger-6930-president-spinning-reel-parts-c-186372_186375_187193.html So the rotor assembly has some play in it, like it wiggles side to side when I gently try and move it. It seems loose. My other Presidents don't do this. The main shaft moves with it. I'm wondering if I can tighten the rotor nut (doesn't seem like it), or maybe there is another way to tighten it so it doesn't have this play. I've had this reel 3 years and it is my most used, so it has had a lot of use. I was lubing it today when I noticed, and it seemed funky the last time I fished. It is otherwise smooth. I tried googling this and found nothing. Thanks for any help! Edit: The main shaft doesn't seem to move with it. The rotor nut seems tight. The shaft does move, but less and independent of the rotor, far as I can tell. I can't say for sure.
  20. A have a minivan and I can get it up there. I lay the yak next to the side of the van then lift one end up to the roof. The kayak is perpendicular to the van at this point, leaning on it. I then grab the part still on the ground (for me it's the back end) and lift and slide it up onto the rack, turning the kayak as it gets up on top so that it is oriented correctly, facing forward. I'm 54, okay shape, gotta be careful with my back, and I have tendinitis, and I get it up there pretty easily. I can do this on launch ramps and it doesn't slide. I put it on right side up. Thanks a lot for this, it really helps! It's hard finding good detailed descriptions on reading fish finders.
  21. If you're only 40 then you have plenty of time! I made my first commercial video game at about 40 and made a lot of money. After that I went back and managed a strip club I'd worked at before. Did that for a year. My brother owned it or I would have never searched for a job like that! Now I do graphic design for a pot dispensary. I don't work in the store but it's an interesting place to work. I have no problem working in the pot industry, after all I used to sell alcohol to people and let me tell you, the drinkers cause all the problems in the bar. Every time. That's 3 unusual yet pretty cool jobs all since I was 40. You got a lot of life still to go. Heck I just started fishing 4 years ago and I'm 54 tomorrow. Edit to add: try and do what you love. Making games, working in the bar and the pot club....it's been enjoyable to me. As I age my motto is "I will fit work around my leisure/fishing time from now on, not the other way around."
  22. Alcohol. In a resort hotel I'd say that's the reason 95% of the time. Kids the other 5% Then again there are a lot of true idiots out there, I should change the figures to allow for them too. But then they are probably also drunk so.... shrug.
  23. I load it from the side onto my van like the video mentioned earlier.. I used to think it would slide off when unloading on a ramp but it doesn't. Haven't dropped the yak yet, though with my 100 plus pound kayak it's not fun either. Works for now and I don't feel like I will hurt my back or anything. I also add a third strap near the front if I'm traveling far just in case one comes loose. Can't hurt. And I do not use a front or rear strap down the front of my hood. My van design isn't really conducive to it and it hasn't been necessary.
  24. I think you can drain lithiums 90%, and they are getting very affordable compared to lead acid. I remember driving around looking for milk crates behind stores and all over town. I finally bought one for $10, then saw two on the side of the road the next day. But looking back I don't want some homeless dudes crate, which is what they looked like. Nasty. I put a lid on mine, made a latch to hold it shut, and another gizmo to hold the lid open. All made from Starboard. I love Starboard. You can run small bolts into milk crates and attach whatever you want.
  25. I used to use an off-brand action cam. It wasn't waterproof so never had those kinds of heat problems. I really don't need mine to be waterproof. Many action cameras are not waterproof. Drone manufacturers make a few cameras, maybe DJI would work better. My GoPro 6 runs all day without problems IF I don't use an external battery. Actually it worked well plugged in a few weeks ago as well. I've only had problems with 7 and up. It does suck and has become a real issue. I just bought the 7 and, like I said, am considering trading it for a 6. Stabilization isn't as important for the cam I have mounted on my yak. Actually I can barely tell the difference in EIS anyways between the 6 and 7. GoPro 8 made some real progress though. Maybe turning EIS off would help? I mean it takes power to operate, and that creates heat. Doubt it though. None of the cheap ones I find can do high enough framerates at 2.7k or 4k. There's always a drawback. And the GoPros do okay when not using HEVC. Shoot at 1080 and you're fine. But ya that's not acceptable. Shrug.
