Do you think George Perry's record is legit?
What matters is whether or not this is a valid record, and what evidence was used in granting that record. This is fishing. Tall tales abound. If any record needs specific evidence, rules and documentation, it's fishing. It isn't personal. It doesn't mean Perry was dishonest. I don't think he was, I doubt he even cared much. I think it should be a footnote in the record books since there is no evidence that this fish weighed what is claimed. It can't meet current record requirements, not even close. This level of evidence, or lack thereof would not pass muster today. It's not fair to the guy who catches a verifiable fish of the same weight next week. This record cannot be verified in any way. It was not officially weighed. There is no evidence of it's weight whatsoever, not even any verifiable photos of the fish. I don't care if the lake was too small for big fish, or no other bass near that size have been caught in the area, and I don't care how many cameras or scales were in the county. All that matters are facts in evidence and there are little to none. I'm a nice guy, but sorry! Rules are rules. My tune has changed a bit since the start of this thread. I think this catch should be stricken from this record based on what I just wrote. There's no other fair way to look at it. This isn't Perry's fault, it's the IGFAs. Anyone can start a new world record with their own rules. Call it the BassResource Record. Lower the evidence requirement if you want. The IGFA doesn't need to be the final authority on anything. This particular record though has it's own rules. They shouldn't be broken and they would have to have been to accept this fish as the record. Maybe a new record organization for fishing should be started since this one doesn't seem to follow its own rules.

Interesting experience at BPS yesterday....this ever happen to you?
My Bass Pro is still out of so many things I don't go there to browse. Need 4/0 hooks? Favorite color plastic? A rod? Fuhgedabouttit. Order it.

What’s wrong with me! No motivation to go fishing?
I have to sometimes force myself to fish right now. Since Covid started (I guess) I have been feeling more unmotivated across the board, and it is apparently true for a lot of people. Maybe some kind of depression? Add to that the crazy election and all the fallout from that and, I dunno I need a break from reality. Fishing usually is that break, but man I'm just tired a lot. I have less energy consistently which makes me wonder if I got the bug early and didn't know it. I think I may go night fishing tonight just to get outta the house, even if I don't feel like it. I never have done that around here, could be interesting. Sometimes you do have to force it, other times go with the flow.

Do you think George Perry's record is legit?
One more thing for me to add. The question in the thread title is about the records legitimacy. If it does not meet the requirements of that particular record then it can't really be legit. Whether or not I personally believe the fish actually weighed what is claimed is not the issue. If I catch a fish today that does not meet those requirements then it is not an official record. It would then follow that if this catch that occurred 20 years before the record rules ever existed cannot meet those same requirements then it should not be an official record either. However, if whoever is in charge of all this wishes to make special allowances for pre-existing catches then who am I to say they can't? Do I accept it myself? I don't know. I would probably care if I thought I'd caught a world record fish. If money was at stake all of this might matter. Other than that, pfft. It's good forum talk.

Tight Line or Slack Line hookset?
I do what Glenn told me to do in his videos. If it's wrong then talk to him In my videos I see that if I feel a tap or tug on my T-rig I lower the rod while reeling in slack, then hookset. It's pretty quick usually. Even looks like I know what I'm doing sometimes LOL. Depends on the bite though. If I'm catching smaller fish I often give slack and wait a sec while they get a better hold of it, or I just do a slower tip-down motion and see what happens. If I'm close enough to a hookset position already, or if the fish is pulling hard then I don't lower the tip, I just give 'er a yank!

Are there any private membership lakes in your area?
Sounds like shooting fish in a barrel. Doesn't sound fun to me but I've never fished a place like that. Maybe once would be fun. For the price though, no way never.

Do you think George Perry's record is legit?
It isn't up to someone to disprove something, it is up to the claimant to prove it. I can't prove there is no Easter Bunny, someone would need to prove that there is one. You can't prove a negative. I caught a 17 pound bluegill yesterday - prove I didn't This record is old and if the powers that be choose to keep it as such then okay. It won't matter when I catch my 27 pounder. Or my first 10 pounder for that matter.

Do you think George Perry's record is legit?
So postal scales in 1/4 pound increments (as Tom described) could be the reason for the 2 oz rule. Something like that. Perry didn't need a whopper of a lie to win the Field and Stream contest. I doubt an unbelievable claim like 22 pounds would be necessary. Tom/WRBs story is interesting. Perhaps this record should have a footnote stating that it doesn't meet existing rules. <shrug>

Bass falling
I totally understand "excited" hah. I dropped one two days ago, musta slipped my mind before (ya that's it!). Was a dink and the hook was tough to get out. Grabbed him by the back/shoulders. I finally got it out and got distracted I guess, he shot out of my grip with some speed, face first onto the dirt, AND hit the base of a rock sort of at the same time. Nose dive. Then he flopped around a bit like normal. Seemed fine. Your fish may have cracked a rib or two I suppose but it's probably fine. Mine probably has a concussion or a fat lip And the best part is I have it on video so I can see it over and over again

Do you think George Perry's record is legit?
Easy solution: I'm gonna catch a 27 pounder and then Glenn and Irene can close this obsolete thread! My last thoughts are that in my limited reading on this I didn't find any reason to doubt the story as told. I mean I don't think Perry is a fraud. The only thing that could be in question is the scale, and they had accurate scales back then. Postal scale though? Eh whatever. Like I said, catch a bigger one, problem solved!

Do you think George Perry's record is legit?
Maybe certified scales have some leeway. I doubt every scale is perfectly accurate regardless of certification. Two ounces seems like a lot though. I figure my cheap digital scale is accurate within a few ounces. It has proven to be. Perry's fish supposedly sat around for a bit and dried out some. You could weigh the same fish a few minutes apart and get different weights. Just my thoughts, I don't know why.

Bass falling
Also hold it closer to the ground when you weigh it in case it falls off. I hold mine so they are barely above ground, or the water.

Do you think George Perry's record is legit?
I don't see why live bait should matter. A big fish is a big fish. Do other species require special bait for lake or world records? If not then neither should this one. It probably has to beat it by 2 ounces or more to account for differences in scales, or other factors. Just a guess. In drag racing you have to back up your record run with a second one. At least that's how I remember it.

Is this deep enough for a smallmouth landing net?
The answer was no, it is not deep enough. You got like a dozen suggestions for nets. Mine (page 1) is cheap, floats, short handle, deep, wide, and good with trebles, and a pretty famous kayak angler uses it. Buy it.

Good news!
Congrats! Caught my first bass on a popper too. It's an easy way to get hooked

Cottonwood seeds
Pollen! Few days ago I was trampling through some vegetation looking for a spot to fish when I hit a clump of cattails. I think that's what it was. There was like an explosion of pollen when I hit them. A 6 foot greenish cloud surrounding me. My black clothes were covered. Thankfully I'm not allergic. Even my reel was blanketed with it. Also got stabbed or scraped by some sort of "poisonous" prickly plant. My knee burned all evening. Happened at the same time. Caught fish though!

Finding a secret spot. Do you have one?
Secret spots can be found on rivers and creeks. I have hacked and slashed my way to spots I know nobody fishes because there's no way they could have gotten there, at least not recently (no signs of hacking or slashing). Most anglers tend to fish the easy to get to spots (where all the litter is). The good spots are a longer walk, of course. The secret spots are sometimes in between the "known" spots, or just farther away. Bring a machete and try not to leave an obvious path. If people say, "I haven't fished there I can't find a way to get there", that's where I'm headed. I'm not always adventurous, just saying there are spots, you just gotta work for it

Is there a decent baitcasting telescoping rod?
I have a BPS $20 telescoping rod that I've caught a lot of fish with. I keep it in a backpack in my van for emergencies. You can buy better ones but for $20 you can give it away before coming home. Or not. But ya I think you can fit a 2-piece one as carry-on.

Is this deep enough for a smallmouth landing net?
I bought this net. Greg Blanchard ues it on his yak but he extended the handle with PVC. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005OJQSQ2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 - floats - very short handle - at least 16" deep, I just measured mine - supposed to be good for trebles, but I've never actually used it

Fishing Movies
Just saw this at IMDB website for "A River Runs Through It" Uh...what? We do? I don't!!! I just don't want to eat bass! People don't eat trout? Funny they keep restocking the lakes all the time. Fish are not priceless or endangered. Anyways, I've never seen this movie so I will do so. I'll be sure to eat fish while I do. I would think that "enlightened" would mean that we fish for food rather than terrorizing fish for our enjoyment, not the other way around! I am not enlightened. How about catch and release deer hunting? "Just shoot 'em in the back leg, Clyde, we gotta release 'em!" "Wow, you're so enlightened, Fred!" BLAM!!!

Dangerous Situation - Tell Your Wife or Girl Friend
It happens in Mexico all the time. My brother raced the Baja 1000 three times. On the last trip there were cars lined up on the 2 lane highway of Baja just waiting to hit people and rob them, especially the racing trucks and trailers. It is very well known. The different racing teams agreed to drive close to each other to avoid this. Also, the Federales will pull you over and not let you go unless you bribe them. They don't say anything really, they just stand there waiting. For my brother it was mainly shirts and other racing gear he'd give them. He even gave away their team shirts with their names on them. He brought stuff to Mexico just for this purpose. When I went with him it was mainly FOX Racing stickers we'd hand out to the toll road workers. No hassle from cops. I've seen it myself, but like I said this was in Mexico. Most likely the woman in the OP was about to be robbed, not kidnapped, if the story is true. I have no reason to doubt it happens. Carjackings happen here. Edit to add: Heres one story in the US. https://pix11.com/news/local-news/queens/video-man-attacks-robs-2-after-collision-jackson-heights/

Cheap Vs. Expensive Spinnerbaits.
Walmart inline spinners suck. They don't spin well, period. So for inlines I pay more. I don't use spinners enough to comment further.

Noting lure weights
Me: "Hmmm this one feels about the right weight..."
