  1. Nebraska summer has been very similar to @gimruis. Lots of rain this spring and even through the summer...I live on a few acres outside of town and don't have sprinklers....my yard has not looked this good in years! Just a few weeks of really hot and sticky 90 degree days. Very fortunate. Fishing has been pretty good. No complaints...just wish I could get on the water more.
  2. How much does weight factor in to your rod purchase? I never really thought much about rod weight until the trip to Canada chasing Pike: My four main bass fishing casting rods range from 3.9 to 5.0 ounces. I really like this weight range for my style of fishing. My "heavy" casting rod is 6.1 ounces...this quickly became my favorite pike rod on this trip. But it's almost too big for how I fish bass...it gets left at home a lot. The other Pike / Musky rods are 6.8 and 8.0 ounces. I'll keep them for Pike and Musky, and maybe bottom bouncing walleye. I have one light spinning rod weighing 3.4 ounces. Mainly a panfish rod. The other seven spinning rods range between 3.9 and 4.4 ounces. They serve me well. Looking to add two casting rods...found two that are 4.2 and 4.6 ounces, respectively.
  3. Goodness, that's a horrible day! I've heard stories of ground wasps, but thankfully have never encountered them! Whew. I do have some lower leg issues...ruptured my Achilles tendon playing basketball...and also broke bones in my foot...again playing basketball. Those days are over. Broken bones are no fun, but today's medicine is pretty fantastic...I'm sure you will have a full recovery!
  4. Like @gimruis I use braid to leader on my spinning rods (10lb bright yellow braid to either 8 or 10lb fluorocarbon leader). Love this set up! Good advice to keep out twist. When I spool my spinning rods...tie on the braid...then I walk the spool down my yard 100 yards or so...cut the line...then walk back to the shop and reel in. I do get wind knot's occasionally. To mitigate the issues, I will make a long cast with the wind...then keep tension on the line as I am retrieving. This seems to help.
  5. Parents, grand parents, aunts and uncles all smoked cigarettes'...could not stand the smell. Never tried. Almost all of my friends growing up chewed. Never got in to that either. Probably a good thing...Grandma died of oral cancer in her mid 70's, and lung cancer was the cause of my Mom's death at age 71. Grandpa on my Dad's side had three heart attacks by the time he was 55 years old...I'm 56 and pretty healthy. I want to leave this world as my Grandpa did...at 83 years old, he and Grandma had a little "afternoon delight"....he rolled over went to sleep, and passed peacefully. Now that's the way to go!!
  6. Good Lord @A-Jay, that is an AMAZING haul!
  7. Cannot wait to head back to the Churchill River system in Canada to chase big Pike.
  8. Whelp, the majority of my rods are Cabela's branded from the 1990's. I have a few newer Scheels rods, and a Fenwick spinning rod. All are good...I don't much notice a difference between the newer and older. All of my casting reels are old Curado's or Citca's from the 1990's. A few of my spinning reels are new. I think the biggest impact has been with fishing line...switching to brain-to-leader on my spinning rods has been a game changer.
  9. 19 hours of drive time to the Churchill river system in Canada (recent trip). We fished four solid days and encountered just one other boat...the lodge owner jigging for some walleye. Boat ride from the lodge to fishing areas was 30+ miles. Very secluded, very wild. So many places to fish...so little time. I cannot wait to head north again!! I would love to find secluded, out of the way areas near me. Few exist any more.
  10. Believe none of what you hear, and 1/2 of what you see... I used to fish with a guy would always "one-up" any other fishermen when talking about their day...."oh, you caught a 4 lb bass...well...I landed a 5 lb bass." I do like your dumpster dive! But if I was catching fish on a lure, I would never throw it away...even the bits and parts...I'd keep them as reference and reminder to get more : )
  11. This. Every time.
  12. If the price is right, and they have a good return policy, order this rod and a few others. Internet research is all good and well...but nothing compares to having a fishing rod in your hands for the "feel." I'm still fishing old 1990's Cabela's branded rods...they are still going strong. Have a few newer Scheel's rods, and a Fenwick HMG...they felt good in the store, so I brought them home. Good luck!!
  13. Second marriage for both my wife and me. Rough family history growing up, she's very much a saver and a planner. We have separate accounts and split bills accordingly. Have been doing it this way for 14 years and it serves us well. She buys stuff, I don't say a word...that's her $$. I buy stuff...she comments and grumbles some times. It's in her nature...I get that. At the end of the day, I'm not asking her for $$, I'm paying my bills, funding my retirement, we don't have any debt besides mortgage. She doesn't like to fish...but with this new boat she does come with me...brings a book and some wine...and enjoys being on the water.

    Always makes me sad....
  15. Turning 57 end of September. I naturally wake up pretty early (cause I'm in bed early). Normally fish from 5 AM until around Noon...then head home to take care of chores, projects, etc. I used to stand the entire time while fishing...now I have moved the chair to the front casting deck and sit more, especially when fishing t-rigged or drop shot. The Canada fishing trip a few weeks ago, 10-12 hour days, standing the entire time, casting 1 oz. pike lures. I did sneak in a nap mid-morning...long days, but rewarding. I am no where near as active as @A-Jay, but have really fine-tuned my nutrition in the last few years. Seems to help a lot.
  16. @RevoSEMIpro, the black and blue jig-n-pig works well here in Nebraska. As does any Bluegill colored crank, square bill, jerk-bait, etc. I can't catch a cold on june-bug colored anything.
  17. Churchill River system, Saskatchewan Canada.
  18. I would not worry to much about a "dedicated frogging reel." I've been fishing this for 30+ years Landed a bunch of these last week, 20lb Power Pro, 30+ year old Berkley Series One IM7 casting rod, medium heavy, 3/8-1-1/2 oz. Preferred the 5:1 ratio of the Citca vs. the 6:1 ratio of the Curado's. Felt like I had more leverage / power with the Citca. Note: this 40" | 13lb-8oz. pike was caught on the lightest casting rod I packed for this trip....an old Cabela's branded Fish Eagle II CX2 GC703, medium power, 1/4-3/4 oz seven foot rod. The pike hammer the spoon...then dove into two different weed-beds. It was quite a fight. Tight lines!
  19. @T-Billy good GOD man!! Ninety-something muskie in your FIRST year! Impressive! I've caught a handful in my entire life. Strong work!!
  20. I have had great success with Walmart batteries through the years. Lately they have a sticker showing manufacture date right on the battery... Went to get battery for my John Deer x750...had to dig deep in to the stock at Walmart...the batteries in front were manufactured in October and November of 2023...battery towards the back manufactured in July of 2024 : ) Keep your receipt, Walmart does good job of standing behind their warranty.
  21. As others have said, get the biggest boat and motor you can, period. In 2004 I ordered a 2500HD crew cab 4x4...and opted for the 496 / 8.1 Big Block backed by the Allison transmission. Wonderful engine, soooo much power, loved it! (okay, didn't really love a 24 gallon fuel cell and 10.5 MPG...but you gotta feed the Beast!) Good luck with your search. Lots of great advice here...be sure to post pictures of your new rig!
  22. A Carolina rig! Lakes around here are either mucky bottom with lots of moss, standing timber, or devoid of any structure / rocks / etc.
  23. Here is the OnX map/track from day one. From the main lodge to the impassable falls, it is 34.8 miles...took us an hour and a half, averaging 22.5 MPH. His Alaskan tops out around 36 MPH, but we wanted to save fuel and ran ~25 MPH most days. Burned about 10 gallons of fuel daily. Red X's mark hazards or smaller falls that are passable. Small town to the right of the dam is Sandy Bay. The area is HUGE, with so many places to fish. We relied heavily on the fish finder tracking to navigate the lake / river system & mark spots. We did not even touch Sakatesewin Lake between the dam and lodge. We fished Wednesday through Sunday and saw only one other boat on the water fishing.
  24. @Further North, we originally were going to stay in one of the outpost cabins to be closer to fishing areas...but being our first time at that location, wanted to be cautious. Most of the lakes Brother and I fish around home are 5 MPH, no wake and not large. Running for an hour each way was kind of a nice change from our normal fishing patterns. @warefisher the biggest pike hit on buck-tails and spoons. My Brother threw the kitchen sink at them...even made a few "franken-lures" to try. We did catch some on different lures, but the majority were on big 1 oz. spoons or buck-tails. The crazy thing was walleye...we were catching them on big spoons with 12" steel leaders(!)
