  1. That looks good but can I charge it with the same charger I use for my car battery?
  2. Thanks I assume if a carp was in a lake 25 years ago then they are still in there today then. Would be fun to get a big one for the fight too.
  3. I picked up a garmin striker 4 today for my kayak. I mounted it on my kayak and looks nice but I have a problem. What can I use for a battery that is small and light? I was hoping my USB power brick would work but it does not make enough electricity to turn it on. I have the device mounted on my front center hatch and run power wire into the hatch to place the battery in there so it will be safe from getting wet. can someone point me towards a small cheap battery that can power this for 6-8 hours of fishing?
  4. Today I fished a water I didnt fish before (25 years ago from shore) in my kayak. I threw a crank and a big fish hit it. I thought he was a 10 pound bass the way he fought. Got him close and he was a pike about 2 feet long. I panic looking at his teeth and all those treble hooks. Luckly I had my fish grabbing thing but he would NOT open his mouth for the grabber. After trying to use the grabbers I gave up because he started flopping around a lot. I tried to grab him from the back with my hand around him and he was so slippery he freaked out and ended up spitting out the lure and the trebles stuck my hand and the fish swam away. Luckily the hooks were not in too deep so they came out with only a little bleeding. What did I do wrong and how do I do it right? Never came across this fish before.
  5. Just got back an hour ago. Got out there at like 10am launched from the east side and head for the north side of the island first. Hooked my first ever pike on a crank bait and freaked out. Thing fought like crazy I thought it was a 10 pound bass. It was a good size pike probably almost 2 feet long. Never got a picture because I froze in terror at the treble hooks and his teeth. I had my fish grips ready but he would NOT open his mouth. Tried to grab him by the back and he was so slime he struggled and spit the trebles into my hand and swam away. A little bleeding but I was fine. I fished almost the whole shoreline and got nothing until 4-5pm when I got the bass in the picture on the north east shoreline very shallow. Then I got another almost in but he escaped (this one was pretty big). When I gave up and started heading for the car I got a bunch more bites too. A lot of them were probably blue gills though as I started seeing them at that time. I learned its probably best to start fishing 2-3pm and stay until dark. I was beat and ready to go right when they were biting! Is it a good sign that the bass were so shallow? Were they probably pre-spawning yet? Looks colder tuesday but I think im going to go again and its my next day off to fish.
  6. Thanks for the tips. I do think the sand goes in a way I was on that side once probably 25 years ago when I was a kid to swim on the beach. I used to always fish from shore when I was a kid that was on the east side only though. I have memories of guys in small jon boats with the floor covered in big bass they caught coming to shore. I didnt even realize there was a boat launch there I was just going to put in on the east side shore but maybe the ramp was not there 25 years ago because people used to always put in on the east shore. Ill probably start fishing that outlet then work to the island and work around it over the north then down south the other side and to the beach and ramp.
  7. Stand and walk on bank. Sit in kayak so far at least until the water warms up. No way im gonna practice standing in kayak when water is still cold.
  8. Thanks alot for that site it will come in handy. Thats good I hope I catch a bunch. I got 3 bass so far this year all with in the past week or so. They just wouldnt bite before then. I got my first 2 on a smaller lake after only 2 days of warm 60s temps.
  9. https://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/fish_marine_pdf/clnlkmap.pdf Been 70 degree for few days biggest warm period so far this year and trees just starting to bud here today. Will the fish be spawned yet on this lake? Where do you think they would be swimming on this lake right now on a sunny 70 degrees day? Going here on kayak tomorrow.
  10. I use the DEC websites and I notice when they list the fish they dont say carps are there when I know that they are there. Is it safe to say there are carps in every water where fish is? Thinking about trying for some when I shore fish just have a pole with carps bait sitting for fun.
  11. Went to 6 mile and got a bass. I paddled all the way into the back right arm. So much cover out there all downed trees. I got the bass on a dark sleep lure. It kept getting hanged up on all the wood though so I used a small bitsy jig with a cray fish on it. I didnt get hung up with that but also didnt catch anything else. WAY in the back there was 100s of turtles all basking in the sun on logs and sticks. Was a good day had lots of fun.
  12. Supposed to be nice around 60 degree out. I can go to a place that is elevation 255 feet or a place that is 1319 feet. Obviously the higher up place will be colder but forecast says maybe 2-3 degree difference. https://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/84676.html https://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/65369.html Those are the places. In 6 mile I caught a couple bass at last week. I have not been to the grafton place yet. I will be fishing from kayak. Really looking for advice from people who live in northish area like me but not specifically northeast really. My first time fishing in spring time this year and stumped where to go.
  13. Got a spool of 10 pound EZ braid for my spinning rod and noticed it would break off seemed easy. Lost a few lures but kept using it. Notice it frayed bad and I had to retie at least a few times a day. Tested the line with my fish scale and the line was breaking at 3-4 pounds every time. I use triline knot ( i think its called) and few times in the test the knot would slip. Highest pound i could get was just over 4 pound until break. Tested cheap china "Gagagaijin" 10 pound braid and broke just over 11 pounds every time I tested. (4 tests) with same knots too. Always enjoyed the 20-30 pound EZ braid but sad about this. Is the 10 pound just bad in general or is it a bad spool I got?
  14. If I was a teenager I would go nuts for the stuff just from the colors alone. I always look at the display when I go to Dicks to see if anything looks like it might catch fish or be a better version of something I buy. As someone old I just see loud colors and high prices for stuff that does not look like the quality matches its price. I dont think anyone around here buys the stuff though. I regularly see the Senko, Rapala, Strike King, Etc displays depleted but the googan is always still fully stocked.
  15. I found this washed up on shore today with about 6 feet of line on it. Must have come off on a cast and then eventually floated to shore. Hooks are still sticky sharp and good so maybe not long ago.
  16. Been fishing 2-3 days a week for last couple weeks since ice melted. Kept getting nothing and seeing nothing. Almost questioned why I was fishing. But could not stop myself from going out. Last couple days here in Albany NY have been around 70 degree and today was high 50s. I was at Six Mile Waterworks and slowly going around whole lake at every bank you can fish from. Crawling and climbing and losing about 25 bucks to trees over hanging the lake. Then I find a ice looking spot and for the FIRST time this year I looked in the water and right by the bank I saw little minnows! So I knew there must be fish there somewhere. After a half hour or so I had a bass follow my Vibrax in and just peck at it right by the shore but didnt bite enough to catch. Threw a bunch of stuff then finally the Rapala. I cast it far out and a few feet reeling and he HIT it hard. My first fish of 2021 and my first large mouth bass ever. I ended up getting 2 more bites by missed them but after that I caught another smaller one on some cotton cordless lure from walmart where I made it ow in the dark eyes. Noticed they would not bite stuff fished at bottom or on top. Only lures that dived a bit they would hit so I guess they were in the middle of the water. So glad to finally get some fish. Maybe they finally woke up around here so fun times i hope.
  17. tomhannock reservoir is open so is six mile water works. Pretty much everything around albany is open now. Fish are not really biting yet at all though I fish every tuesday and wednesday and got nothing yet. But after these really record warm days I think next tuesday I might start catching them!
  18. One place I fish has some highways running over it. I wonder does all the road salt in winter get in the lake and damage the fish?
  19. Thanks I see it now. I ever knew they got that small.
  20. Went fishing today at the tomhannock reservoir for first time since ice out. There is still some ice in parts away from sun but 90% melted. Didnt get one bite or even see a sign of fish except this one dead in the water. Water so high its hard to find spots you can even cast from. What kind is this fish? It was about 2-3 inches long.
  21. Im dying to go out in it and wanted to this week but I am afraid the water is too cold still. If I fell out I would probably die still from the water cold. Its 60-70 all week so maybe next week or after it will be a little warm. This week I will be bank fishing which I dont care really I just want to fish real bad. 2 weeks ago the lakes were still froze.
  22. To start I will be going only to calm waters that only allow electric or no motor on the boat in the water there. Also going to wait for the day with little wind.
  23. I still never seen anyone with a bait cast around here Albany NY. Only really been fishing since august last though but seen plenty of fisher man. All use spincast or spinning reel that I seen.
  24. Thanks. I will probably just leave them open but look into the golf balls. Hopefully tuesday I will be able to hit the water for the first time. I just gotta buy a milk creat and some bungie cords to hold my tackle boxes. I got a car top carrier today. Do I need an anchor for a small lake with no real current? Kayak is 90 pounds and I am 265 pounds so will that be enough weight to keep me from drifting all over? wind says 2-4mph that day. If I do need anchor I have my old intex raft one I can use its just a 8 pound dumbell on a rope.
  25. Those baits are awesome. That top one alone costs more than my kayak, all my rods/reels and most of my tackle box put together!
