  1. I have come to learn that fishing and relationships have a close...well....relationship. Whether it be missing a friend's event because "the bite was really hot" and "I lost track of time" or because you stayed out for extra hour for (another) last cast and ended up catching a monster...only to be forced to hang it up in the doghouse. About two months ago, on a camping trip, I actually forwent fishing (for smallmouth in the Kankakee river in the fall during a low pressure front) in favor of spending time with a rather striking young lady in my group. SHe enjoyed fishing, but not as much as me...and overcoming the occasional oblivious, blockhead-ish tendencies of my gender, I managed to gleam, through nonverbal messages that she would rather spend time with me away from the river. As a result, we have been dating and it is going great. She even put up with my cabin fever-induced idea to run out on a frozen pond with a maul and attack the ice to make a hole. (My patience runs out with ice fishing...I may be a die-hard angler, but I'm rarely crazy enough for fishing through a hole in the Northern Illinois winter. I don't understand how some of you do it...do you use morphine or bring a T.V. with you to numb the pain and boredom. haha Either way, I applaud you.) So, what role has fishing played in your relationships, what funny stories do you have, and how might fishing ruin your New Year's resolution to be a better friend, significant other, or family member?
  2. Really just looking for opinions on the possibility of a double digit largemouth swimming in WI. I personally believe theres a few lakes that have the potential for a fish that big.
  3. Hey gang! Long time viewer of the site, first time poster I recently caught a state record LMB in Rhode Island and St. Croix sent me an AVS66MF Avid spinning rod for the accomplishment. I plan on making the hike to Cabella's with the rod to match it up with a reel, but I would like to hear some unbiased opinions/reviews before doing so. My ceiling is $500 or so, but I don't need to spend that much if its unnecessary. Though my research, I have been gravitating towards the Stradic FK and C4i+, but would like to know more about JDM reels and some reviews on Diawa/Penn reels. ***I do most of my fishing off shore on top water gear and only pursue Largemouth Bass. Also, I pretty much always use 30lb braid on my spinning setups.*** My current set ups are as follows. Neither are all that great, so I am looking for my first above average combo. St. Croix PS60MF w/ Quantum Energy (old style w/ chameleon paint) St. Croix PC60MF w/ Diawa Viento Let me know! I look forward to seeing what everyone has to say and if possible, lets keep this civil. I really don't have a horse in the race as I've always fished on budget gear, just looking for something ill be happy with for years to come. PS. I'll try to upload a picture of the catch, but for some reason I'm getting a denied based upon a size restriction which my picture is under. Here it is
  4. A couple days ago i caught this guy at my local lake. There are monster bluegill there from about 10-12 inches. This guy was only 11 1/2in with 12in being my PB there. However he is the thickest and heaviest bluegill i've ever caught. I've always been wondering if there was a state record in there and i honestly think there could be. I don't have a scale so i can only guess his weight. The state record is 2.95 lbs. So how much do you guys think he weighs? (I really should get a scale shouldn't I?)
  5. We all have them, some true, some slightly exaggerated (now I now it is a hard idea to accept that anglers could lie, but I have slowly come to expect that we fisherman sometimes, albeit rarely, blow stories out of proportions.) So post any you've had or heard, be they true or lies. Mine occured when I had started fishing for crappie and baby bass. A small bass bit and as I was reeling him in, I could see him flare, and what I figured to be a log, suddenly darted and my rod bent double. The spines on the baby had caught in his throat I suppose. Just as I lifted him out of the water, I forgot that I was using 4 pound test, and I heard the most sickening sound an angler can hear. TWANG! She fell back to her world, never to be caught be me again. Sigh.
  6. Ione, Calif. -- A new record for large mouth bass caught at Lake Camanche was set on Jan. 26, when Lonnie Owens Sr. of Galt landed a 15.2-pound lunker in the main body of the lake, while using a swimbait toad thrasher lure. The fish was 28" long and 25" in girth. After landing the bass, Owens released it back into the lake. Twenty-two of the 25 biggest large mouth bass (LMB) ever caught were taken in California, reports fishingnetwork.net. The largest LMB ever landed was a 22 lb., 4 oz. monster caught in 1932 at Montgomery Lake, Ga. California’s record is a 22.5 lb. fish caught in 1991 at Castaic Lake in Southern California. The previous Lake Camanche record was 15 pounds for a fish caught in the winter of 2010.
