  1. Now that we are a few days into this first cold front down here in Florida...how is everyone doing on the water? The bite has been tough for me the last 3 days - nothing seems to be working well at all. Threw soft plastics all day yesterday, finally landed one on a shallow crank - fishing Lake Harris in Central Florida. Fish seem to have lock jaw - hoping they are a bit less finicky and ready to eat today. How has everyone else been doing?
  2. I plan on fishing the Hillsborough next week after Christmas. I've lived here my whole life and have never fished it. I wanna catch largemouth but kinda unfamiliar with the thing. Anybody ever go out there and fish it? What ramp would you suggest, I gotta 21' flats boat and should I go north or south? Is there anything I should be alert out there for? Will the water level be okay? Lastly, what works well out there? Thanks
  3. Yesterday I went to the Santa Fe River to catch a Suwannee. The area I fished was a fast flowing shoal which seemed reminiscent of the smallmouth rivers back in Maryland (only with much darker water and subtropical flora). I figured that Suwannee bass would behave almost identically to smallmouth, so I had high hopes. I caught a single Florida bass (not pictured) and had another fish follow my Texas rigged tube to the bank. This fish was shorter and stouter, though I didn’t get a good look at it. It had been holding onto the tails of my bait before it realized something was wrong and spit it out, never catching the hook point. It might have been a Suwannee. Today, I went back to the Santa Fe in an area that was downstream of where I fished yesterday. While this spot was slower and deeper, which made me less confident of success. However, it was surrounded by a couple of springs, which I figured Suwannee bass would gravitate towards. I fished the main river above a major spring for a bit, and hooked the same bowfin about three times. They seem to have very hard mouths, because he spit the hook all three times. It was frustrating and exciting at the same time, since I’ve never caught a bowfin. I moved downstream and had no action for a while. I fished the mouth of the aforementioned spring, but still had nothing. I was confident that Suwannees would gravitate towards the clear water and fast flows of the spring mouth. I went even further downstream and found a section of bank with cypress trees along it, and started working that area. It took a few casts, but I got my fish when I pitched my bait (the same Texas-rigged junebug Dry Creek Tournament Tube from the day before) near a cypress, a short distance way from the bank. I was half paying attention when I saw my line acting up. In an instant, I tightened my line, felt a fish, and set the hook. It immediately swam towards me, making me unsure of whether I had hooked him and how well he might be hooked. I tightened up and it was on. The fight was short but intense; the fish at the end of my line pulled hard against me—harder than the bowfin from earlier—and stayed down. I pull the bass out of the water under the assumption that it was a decent Florida bass. To my surprise, it was a small Suwannee. Interestingly enough, the bass never jumped despite have the opportunity to do so. I think this is one of the many quirks of Suwannee bass. Moved a bit above where I caught that fish, and find a tiny spring. It formed a wide, shallow pool less than a foot deep before flowing into the river, just above where I caught that first fish. I looked in and didn’t see much at first. I casted into the pool anyways, and say a plethora of fish swim out. Most were smaller fish: black spotted sunfish, bluegill, and a few juvenile bass of unknown variety. However, behind them were at least two Suwannee bass of catchable size. They look very pretty in the water. Having shown no interest in my tube, I can only assume that these shallow spring pools are refuge, not feeding grounds. I moved back to the main river and casted my tube under a cypress tree just above the creek. This time, I was watching the turtles when the strike came. The bass ran off with my bait and nearly tightened my line before I realized and set on him. Again, it was a dogged fight. This fish rolled and splashed at the surface without ever jumping, much like a rockfish. I worked the stretch of cypress tree for a while longer before I turned my attention to a large tree that was half submerged near the far side of the river. It created a nice wake, and I just knew there had to be a fish hiding in the eddy. I switched my tube for a Zoom Baby Brush Hog in watermelon candy. Despite being a natural color, the watermelon showed up in the water far better than the junebug tube. I casted the rig out towards it. It took a few tries to place the bait exactly where I wanted it to go. When it got there, the bait drifted down with the current and the line shot tight. I cranked down and pulled into it, and I had my third Suwannee bass. Again, this fish never jumped despite having ample opportunity to do so. I ended the day by working the bank at my feet. I went downstream and casted into the seams. Having gotten a decent idea of where Suwannee bass like to live, I put my Brush Hog in a riffle right next to a cypress tree and let it drift down. After doing this I few times, I got a bite. This time, it was a Florida bass. I realized that I still didn’t understand Suwannee bass, and that they truly are fascinating critters. The Florida bass i caught didn’t even realize it was hooked until it was right at my feet. This fish did jump, which revealed its identity to me. Overall, I had a great day on the water. I’m grateful for the opportunity to take my mind off of my Calculus class, but I’m even more grateful that I caught—not one, but three—Suwannee bass. I’ll be back in due time to catch even more and figure them out. By the end of the winter, I’d like to be able to pattern them and target them specifically, without pulling into too many Floridas. What struck me as being surprising was that these fish are NOT just the Florida equivalent of a smallmouth. There really aren’t that many similarities, outside of having an affinity for crawfish and wielding smaller mouths. I’ll report back as I go through the process of learning more about Suwannee bass. I look forward to the journey 🙂
  4. Hi all , Im staying in Deerfield beach Florida last week of March. I want to rent a boat 19/20/21 ft and bring my two boys , and wife fishing and boating. Any advice would be awesome! Want to catch peacock or large mouths.
  5. Hey all, I have a 14 ft jon boat and I need a fishing partner. I usually fish Lake Underhill or Winter Park chain but occasionally find myself on Conway or in lake county. Im tired of fishing alone. Hit me up if you want to get out on the water.
  6. I'm heading to Ft. Myers / Cape Coral Florida in a couple of weeks and have spent plenty of time watching YouTube videos of Florida bass fishing. It seems that a lot of folks are using a bobber stopper just above their bullet weights to peg the weight for fishing cover. I've searched various tackle sites hoping to pick some up but haven't found anything like what I'm seeing used. Could someone please help out the new guy? Thanks in advance!
  7. Hi! This is my first post here on BassResource, I hope this will be a great experience. I have grandparents living at a golf course in south Florida. I've been fishing there most of my life but could never figure out the spawn patterns. I'm visiting them next week. I've read a lot about how bass in Florida have a mind of their own and they spawn whenever they feel like it. I've been hearing different reports that they have been in prespawn, others that they are already spawning. I've never fished prespawn or spawn, would anyone be able to help me figure out what the bass are doing and some lure/technique recommendations? My trip and conditions: Mon 1/20-Fri 1/24. Rain showers Mon, Thu, Fri, otherwise mostly sunny. Temperature will be increasing throughout the week. West wind Mon, Tue, Wed, east wind Thu, Fri. Moon is waning until the new moon on Fri. Temp. will increase by the day up to 75F. Thank you for your help, and I hope I get to meet a few friends along the way! Henry
  8. Hi there everyone, So I recently moved to Florida and I'm on the east coast of Florida so of course there's a huge saltwater scene. However, I'm trying to find largemouth bass to try and catch. I'm originally from New York and am very familiar with the fishing up there (fished my whole life, fished tournaments, etc etc.) However, I can't seem to figure out the bass down here yet, or the best places to find them. Any tips? Thanks in advance! P.S. my boat is back in New York, so I only have access to shore fishing
  9. Looking for suggestions on where to catch or buy wild golden shiners in the jacksonville area. Plenty of farm raised at the bait shops but looking for wild. Wanting to try them out in the local retention ponds. Also open to new fishing partners in the area to pond hop with. Thanks.
  10. Hello, I'm planning a week long fishing trip to Florida. Were going to be driving down from NC with my boat. I've never fished lake Seminole so the plan was to start there and depending on the action either stay there and fish that area the whole time or head north of Orlando where I have family and finish the trip there. I just wanted some advice on when you all think would be the best time to go? I thought Maybe the second week of Nov. I'd be able to go anytime between the end of Oct to the beginning of Dec. From what I've read The early part of Nov its starting to cool down a bit and the bass are aggressively feeding in the shallows along the vegetation. Anyways any advise would be greatly appreciated. -Thanks
  11. Hello does anyone know any good ponds in or around the julingtion creek/fruit cove area. Thank you
  12. Moved to Jacksonville from St. Cloud. I had plenty of lakes and angler friends there and fished many tournaments while I lived there. Recently started fishing the BFL as a coangler. Ive been wanting to fish tournaments with clubs here but I don't know of any and I don't really know anyone in the area. The other issue is if I do find a club I currently don't have a boat and I'm not sure how many folks would be willing to let me fish out the back of theirs. I would be willing to pay half of everything (fees, fuel, hotel, etc). I am a pretty well rounded guy as far as life and fishing goes. If anyone could help steer me in the right direction I would really appreciate it. (I promise not to step on your seats or trash your boat!)
  13. Thinking about fishing it soon. Has anyone tried it ? Somehow in my rambles I never fished this one , just passed by it a few times. It's got several things I like : Less than 1 hour from home. Fairly small size . Cypress tree ringed , with lots of maidencane grass , no development . And it's a fairly remote lake. Info on it is nearly non existent.
  14. Hey guys I already knew it but I have the best girlfriend a guy could ask for and for Christmas she is taking me from St. Louis MO to Florida to fish Lake Okeechobee for a few days! Looks like she saw how many Scott Martin videos I watch online hahahha. We will be staying at J&S Fish Camp at the beginning of April, which is on the North East side of the lake, and are renting a bass boat for a day and I was wondering if anyone could give me a few tips. My fishing experience in FL is a handful of trips, all were deep sea and all occurred before I had such a passion for fishing. I wanted to make sure that we both have a fun time, especially because now she has to put up with me for a 16 hour car ride :), she would be using one of my spinning set ups and I would be using spinning/baitcaster setups. Thank you for all of your help, this is the absolute nicest thing anyone has ever done for me as a gift and I cannot explain how excited I am to experience this with her!
  15. Hey everyone, this is my first post so I made sure it was a good one. This is a typical fish that got away story just so you're aware, Hahaha. I was fishing the retention pond at my apartment complex yesterday around 3:00 pm. Very small pond, 150 yards in length and you can cast across it. I've only caught tiny bass up until this point. I heard rumors of a monster bass lurking near the shallowest part of the pond, where most of the cover/bait fish are. Second cast using a black/red flake crawfish jig got me a small bite, which turned out to be the potential bass of a lifetime... My medium action pole immediately bent over, with the fish ripping drag out of the quantum smoke spinning reel. Fought for a good 30 seconds trying to keep him from jumping, until he broke the surface like a great white shark. My heart started pounding. I've caught a 7 lb bass before but this was much, much bigger. Got him close to the shore, but as soon as it saw me he/she shot into the weeds, ripping out more drag and shaking the hook loose in the process. I've never felt so dissapointed in my life, so close to my first 10 lb or more large mouth. Long story short, I need redemption! In your guy's opinion, should I fish the same spot next weekend? Same lure? Same time? How the hell can I get this fish to bite again?! Thanks in advance, I'm looking forward to posting a picture of this monster for you guys!
  16. The other day I decided to fish a landlocked pond that I haven't been to in a while, and was suprised to see a bunch of mullet swimming around. I've seem them in saltwater connected canals, but never a landlocked pond. I also caught a bass and had a large tarpon like fish hit my buzzbait. Anyone have any experience with mullet in landlocked ponds? And yes, I am 100% POSITIVE they were mullet and not carp. Don't ask , what if they were carp.
  17. I'm finally getting a chance to fish Tenoroc Fish Management Area this weekend. Anyone have any tips for me? Which lake should I try? Best lures/techniques?
  18. So who do you like and why? I say Go Gators!! They won 2 out of 3 this year in their season series.Lsu has 6 titles though,so they have a great track record. Sec !
  19. Hey everybody! I'm gonna be down in Plantation Florida for about a week and a half at the end of June. I noticed where I'm staying is surrounded by small Florida canals. I'm wondering how good the canals are in Florida for fishing. Which fish are the most common? What to catch em with? And how to use the bass gear for June? Help would be greatly appreciated thanks
  20. Hey guys new member here. Ive long looked into many forums from bass resource.com. Excited to join and get any tips and advice from more experienced anglers! I fish local waters in South Georgia and North Florida. A lot of pressured places but i sometimes do well. I plan to very soon get into kayak bass fishing. Maybe even tournaments! Y'all have a good one!
  21. I'm on my phone and at work so I'll keep this as short and sweet as possible lol. All my gear is regular bass fishing attire. Corrosion resistant bearings is all I'm bolstering. Nothing too fancy. My question is about the canals. Primarily the Cape Coral canals if any of you are familiar with them. Are they salty? Should I feel uncomfortable using my gear in those canals? And if you use your stuff in salt, how do you clean it off when you're done, and how long has it lasted for you using this method?
  22. Hey guys, Just created my profile tonight and very new to this site. Unfortunately, I don't have access to a boat so my friend and I do a lot of bank fishing. Moved out to Davie, Florida last year and we are looking for a good hot spot for decent sized largemouth and peacock. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!
  23. Hello guys, I currently live in Margate, South Florida. I have visited Okeechobee several times but need help to understand it. I fishing out of South bay RV boat ramp nearby Slims fish camp. I mainly fish Cuts along the rim canal and flats on the side of trails leading to the big lake. This weekend I fished a small area of grass flats along the big lake. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
  24. I'm looking for some new spots to fish for largemouth. I fish for peacock every weekend but I'd like some spots like ponds for largemouth near the southeast area of Miami. And please don't say there are spots everywhere because if that were true for where i live i wouldn't asking this question. Thanks in advance
  25. Does anyone here know of a place I can get a depth map of Lake Stone in Century Florida?
