Mono Vs Braid For Topwater Flukin'

Featured Replies

Did something different today. I have been using mono as my fluke line and haven't been missing many fish.... Really none that I can recall. This morning I tried braid. The only reason for the change was I thought it would help me stay in top of the water more than the mono. I think it does do that, but I think the extra stretch with the mono was helping my hook up ratio. It could have just been a bad morning.. Cause the fish weren't as aggressive as usual. I'll try the braid again and see if it was the slower bite or me just being to quick on the trigger.

What do you guys use for flukes when you are working them fast across the top/ grass?

Any time you add grass to the equation, I believe braid is your #1 choice. The braid will cut through all the vegatation and allow you to haul fish out of the thick nasty in a hurry.

I agree with Jkarol24 about braid being able to cut through grass better than any line. However I use mono for all my jerkbaits mainly because of the clear water.. I fish a local lake that is LOADED with submerged grass and have never had a problem with them trapping me in it and breaking me off. IMO I feel the stretch helps my hookups.

I think I am going to try one more experiment. I am going to switch rods. Both rods I have re MH 6'6" but one has a little more backbone than the other. Also, I may try to go down in reel speed. I was using a 7:1 with braid and should probably use a 6:4:1 or 6:2:1 with the braid. I think the low stretch and fast reel were hurting me on my hookups. My mono reel is a 6:2:1 and it does fine.

I use 20# braid with a 12# CXX leader. An Alberto knot makes the connection. For the hook, 99% of the time, I use a Gamakatsu Wide Gap Finesse Hook, no weed guard, snelled, and nose hook the fluke. The rod is a 6' 9" m/x-fast.
