How To Change Trebles Without Getting Hooked

Featured Replies

Anyone? I just got KVD 1.0, 1.5, 2.5 and want to change them to the Mustad KVD #2s, My dad said he would do it for me, BUT, he doesnt like getting hooked. He is in construction, and has the tools to change them, BUT we have no split rings to use

I would suggest hook keepers, their like hard plastic blankets for your trebles. But you'd have to go to the store and when you're there you could get split rings...

Get some split ring pliers. you can make some with a grinder, or file if you want to put some muscle into it, and a pair of needle nose pliers

Split ring pliers are the easiest way to do it. I just use my fingernails to open them and just make sure I'm not pushing/pulling/twisting towards my fingers.

If it's a tiny thin wire split-ring, like on the small baits (I'm guessing it's so), fingernails should work. Remember to keep pulling out the old hook, and pushing in the new treble at the same time, so that you don't have to open the split ring twice.

In the long term, a simple pair of needlenose pliers would be much better.

BUT we have no split rings to use

Doesn't the bait already have split rings? Take the old hook off, and put on the new ones.

P.S. size 2 is a huge hook, no? I use #2 trebles on much, much bigger baits.

Split ring pliers, they're made specifically for what you are doing. I have a pair of Rapala longnose pliers that also have a tip for opening split rings that stay in the boat with me and I have a pair of Rapala split ring pliers with my fishing tackle in the garage.

Wildbillb beat me to it. That's a great video, and a very easy to use method.

Get your split-ring pliers at a craft store...excellant quality at under $8....later

Spro makes split rings that are much easier to open. I generally use my hands to change out treble hooks with them.
