Eastern Ma Fishing Reports

Recommended Posts

Stopped on my way to pick up groceries yesterday, basically just to cast my new Tatula Elite. Didn't expect to catch anything.

Much to my surprise I pulled in a bass on my home made spinnerbait...

I banged up the swivel and it got wonky. Switched to a chatterbait

then bagged a pickerel... then a big pickerel... then a big bass.

I think there was a bug hatch or something, lots of activity.

To leave, I swung my rod like a baseball bat to get the farthest cast I could. And in did, bombed my chatterbait the farthest cast of the night. It did nest a bit and snap off midcast, but I accomplished my goal as a buffoon. Lost my only red craw Picasso Shock Blade.

Went out for a couple hours tonight and got a 4.2 at the very end.  Felt like a snag at first but then started moving to the side. Real nice healthy fish. Caught it on a worm that I dropped down near some new lily pads in about 5ft of water close to the shore.

I fished a new pond in Plymouth today.  It was mostly cloudy and winds were 10-12 from the west.  I bagged two yellow perch, two smallies, and one pick in short order on a smallmouth LV200 and orange/red 6th sense square bill.  The sun came out, the wind died down and the bite shut off like a light switch.

Not a bad first trip.  I found a few rocks & trees in the water and spotted some beds in 5' - 8'.  Water temps were 55.x - 56.x.

It's getting good now.  Best of luck to everyone getting out.  I'll be on the Cape again May 1st to 3rd.  I'm not sure if I'm taking my kayak or Ranger.

I had a pretty good day yesterday.  I hit 3 ponds on the South Shore.  Pond #1 is shallow and almost void of vegetation because the town treats the water.  I managed one bass, about 2 pounds, on a 6" Senko, and a handfull of dink pickerels on a red chatterbait and Rapala BX Brat.

Ponds #2 & #3 are both deep bowls.  I grabbed two smallies at each, on a combination of a perch Stunna 112+1 and purple/blue flake swim Senko.  There were many more beds since my last trip here and there were fish on them.

Water temps were 57.x, 56.x, and 54.x, respectively.  It was pretty blue-bird but chilly for late April.

Nice brown. Jerkbait by-catch?

Friday skunk.

Saturday went out to Robbins pond, fought the wind. 3.9 saved the day.

Sunday got a couple of 3's on a small bog.

Tonight got this 5.5 on third cast. Missed a brute that broke off.

T-storms before dawn delayed my start but I finally connected with a few more SMB today. Water was 57 degrees, air was around 50 and it was blowing...

Got a solid 4-11 in a pre-spawn staging area on the MDC 3pc Perch Crankdown yesterday. She was long enough for a pin but not quite thicc enough to be a 5. The search continues.

What part of MA? I feel like most of the north shore us still waiting to warm up. Was thinking of trying some smaller bodies of water that might have warmed a little quicker

I had a good couple days on Cape Cod last week.  The bite was consistent, including two SMB just under 4 pounds, a white perch a shade under 2 pounds,  a catfish, and a couple of nice brown trout.  The trout and catfish came to the kayak via Stunna 112+1.  A handful of very healthy white and yellow perch made it to the kayak too.  I only caught two LMB during the trip, but I was targeting SMB.  A jerkbait was about the only bait I needed at all but one pond where all the smallies wanted was a blue tube.

Water temperatures were 57.x - 59.x.  Air pressure Wednesday & Thursday was 30.0.  Friday was 30.2.

Central MA, water temps were just a hair under 60.

If you guys can get out tomorrow I'd take advantage. Cold rain the rest of the week looks to set things back a good bit.

I've been out 5 or 6 times since my last report.  Once in the kayak and the rest from shore.  Kayak trip was ok nothing to write home about.  Seems like most of the bigger fish have pulled back from shallow waters around here, and gone tight lipped .  Shore fishing for Smallmouth in the local river has been great though.  Multiple days with pretty much no stop bites in the all the areas you'd think in moving water.  Lots of topwater fish as well.  Friday I had 4 fish over 2.5lbs, which for the river I was fishing is good.  Biggest was 2.8 and came from a little eddy below a dam right above some rapids, fun fight trying to get it through the short section of class 2 rapids.  Everything has been on a 4' tube and a Choppo 90.

I took @Fishing Rhino out on my Ranger yesterday.  We couldn't launch at a private pond near his house, so we went to another big, shallow lake nearby.  The water looked like coffee and there were no signs of life.  Try again next week.

I stopped by a pond on the South Shore and managed a small Yellow Perch on a jerkbait that was bigger than it was.

Water temps were in the low 60's.

This has been one of the worst springs for bass fishing I’ve ever had.  Took a break for a bit.
caught my first stripers of the season the other day, caught 3 25-26 inches. Few whacks and missed fish.

A couple more SMB before the swimmers crashed the party

Water was just under 58 degrees so the long pre-spawn continues...
