Eastern Ma Fishing Reports

A glimmer of hope report?!

Charles River:

I "finally" got some strikes! Whew! It's just good to know that I am at least in the ballpark technique-wise. I moved a bit further east on the Charles nearish to Brighton by the State Police bldg. Two days ago, I went fishing for about 1 hour just after the sun set. I was using a 2/0 offset hook, with a weightless Gambler brand Ugly Otter, watermelon with red/black flecks—looks sort of like a crawdad. First cast I got a strike right as the lure reached shore. But because I was already in motion of pulling the lure out of the water, the fish didn’t get a good bite at the apple and the lure slipped from its mouth. I cast and recast that area hoping to get it to strike again, but no other strikes that night.

Yesterday morning around 7:30 am or so, I went back to the same area. I started with a senko without any luck. I switched to the Gambler and within a few casts I got a strike! I’ve read the differing opinions about when to set the hook (immediately vs. waiting) and I opted to set immediately. The lure popped right out of its mouth. It was right near shore, so I could see it all happen. I recast to the same general area and within a few casts, I got him to strike again. This time I waited for a good 3 seconds…he was pulling on my line the entire time. I figured that was long enough, but as soon as I set the hook, I saw the lure pop out again. I think maybe I didn’t set hard enough since I convinced myself that I pulled too hard last time. So maybe this time my lighter-pressure simply pulled the lure out of his mouth instead of setting the hook?

Both fish on both days were probably less than a pound, but at least they were real bass AND intentional catches (instead of the accidental catch in my profile pic.) In fact, since they were relatively smaller fish, maybe the lure was just too big for them? Either way, its GREAT to finally see some action.

My next goal is to hit that area one last time in the evening with a little more time prior to sunset. Maybe I am hooking the exact same fish each time and need to move elsewhere, but I figure one last shot, right?

TOTGA, I do have a popper I haven’t used yet. I will give that a try really soon!

FISHING RHINO, I’m all for it! :) Hope everything is going well in GA!

Has anyone had any luck over the past couple days? I couldn't get the fish to bite anything - topwater, cranks, spinners, frogs, shads, worms, jig, senkos.. nothing. Gonna try a different spot tomorrow or Tuesday, but I'm not certain..

Bigger fish are in the canal... Hooked up with a 32"+ striper and landed a 27" along with a bunch of schoolies. People have started to catch some 25lbs+ bass in there...... I would go there soon before they are gone, not to much longer IMO.

Grubs weren't working either. And I don't have any tubes currently - never used them before, so I have no idea how to fish them. I'd like to pick some up and try them though.

Went to Hopkinton State Park yesterday and caught two bass......the first one hit a senko that I threw in front of some sunwarmed rocks in 4' of water and the second hit a twitchbait over a small clump of weeds that were also being warmed by the sun in 2' of water. Then I went home.

Tubes fish just like grubs except the ballhead is usually inside the tube with the eyelet poking thru the tube. My favorite flavor is Gitzit watermelon/red flake.

went to South Wattupa on Saturday. only got a few cast's in. It was wayyyyyyy to windy and choppy out there on my canoe. had no luck but again it was very short lived.

Then yesterday i went out on Swansea dam pond. had some bites but no luck. again its early and water temps were 38 on wattupa and 42 on the dam. At least it was a relaxing time on the canoe. well on swansea pond anyways..lol

Went out today for lunch and between meetings, I managed 3 on a Cotton Cordell lipless crankbait in Red Crawdad. Not sure about water temps, but I would guess low 40*'s as the pond was iced in on the southern end. I fished into the wind using a sweep pause retrieve. 1 fish felt like a weight on the end of the line as he hit on the pause and I never felt the strike. The other two hit just as the lure was paused and there was no doubt about the strike.

Good luck all!

Nice going Jiggy...where were you?

I fished Houghton's pond in the Blue Hills Reservation. It's really close to home.

I want to hit Blue Hills Reservoir in Quincy on my way home some time this week. Same conditions there, the southern end is still iced in so I'm hoping to get some bites in the warmer northern end waters.

Tomorrow's the day.  Grampa and I are trying Mashpee/Wakeby, and possibly Santuit.

Grampa told me he fished MW once before, but it was a long time ago.

Good luck to both of you...I wish I could take a day off to join you guys...of course I would have to beg and bribe Tate...LOL

looks like this weekend things should start to warm up a little. Sampsons Pond in Carver gave up some huge bags last Sat. 3 over 15 lbs and at least 3 fish over 5lbs.

Boat deal is in the works for me and should be ready to rock in less than a month. in the mean time if anyone is looking for a fishing buddy for a day I'm available Sundays and Mondays. Once the boat is ready I'll be sure to post any time I have an empty seat also.

Went down to the merrimack river yesterday for a few hours. It was the first time this season i saw a few fish jumping out of the water so i guess that's a good sign :)
