I just recently decided to really spend time to learn fishing and try to master some techniques before going moving to something else. I'm dedicating this year to softbaits (tubes and worms).

Has anyone hit the charles recently?? I am shocked with what i'm pulling in. I've fished the Charles twice this year and have matched or beaten my PB both times. I pulled in a LMB that weighted at a little over 5# yesterday and 2 around the 4# range. Last time I went I caught a SMB at 2# and it was a hell of a fight.

Growing up here, I really didnt think the charles was capable of this. I've only caught fish one other time in 5 years.

NEjitterbugger those are some dang nice fish!  Bonus points for having the PFD on.

Sounds like the Charles is really producing .... on our list for this year.  For whatever reason there seems to be more quality bass this year.

Nice report grandpa1114...my fish are coming on second weed lines, break lines to deeper water and humps. Tate's comment about the quality of fish this year is spot on, I totally agree with this statement.

The other thing I'm surprised about, is the bigger than average trout I'm catching this year on lipless crank...On heck of a fight in them...I've caught more trout this year on bass lures than any year combined! Loving it to.

Jones508, nice to see you bud!

How is everyone doing in this heat?

I went out for a bit yesterday in the morning and had minimal luck. Shore fishing is tough in this weather.

Lows 80s today. Will hit the waters tonight.

My opinion...for what it's worth...for fishing from shore is find an area with rapid access to deep water and weeds or some other cover. That way you'll be able to start shallow and work your way to deeper water and if you are early enough or late enough in the day, you might even get some transitioning. The fish are metabolizing very fast in this warm water so if you find them, you can have some great action in a hurry. Just because it's hot, don't stay home.

Thanks for the tip grampa... Caught a healthy 3# and a few others tonight. Good times.

Hey all, It's been a good season so far and for whatever reason I haven't thrown a topwater in quite a while until last Thursday and had an absolute blast. Fish, for me, are still out on a second weedline close to deep water. I'm not sure why, but moving baits are still the way to go for me. I'm getting not only more fish, but better quality fish than I'm getting on plastics or jigs.

The fall bite will be here before you know it, good luck!

  • 4 weeks later...

Well maybe I'm the only one to fish in August but if that's the case then a lot of folks missed out on some great fishing. The fish  seem to like the new swim baits that merely attach to a ball head jig. I've been throwing a 4" Swimming Ribster (Lunker City) over weeds and grass to catch some serious numbers of 2.5 to 4.0 lb bass all month. They seem to like 6-10 ft depth. Long casts and slow, darting retrieves seem to be the answer...for me anyway.

I had a decent month for only fishing 5 times. Most of my fish were caught on worms being slowly dragged through and around grassy areas. Frogs were slow for me with only a few small bass through the lily pads.

I just bought a bunch of heavy flipping and punching gear and plan on fishing a few ponds and lakes that are pretty overgrown before summer is out. I will admit though, I did have a blast catching 3lb bass on the Mojo rig on 5lb test flouro. The only two baits I used were a Zoom finesse worm and the Missle Fuse 4.4

August has been a pretty good month for me,best day put two five pounders in the boat. Now that it is starting to get cooler the pickerel bite is picking up again and the things I did to catch bass in the spring and summer just don't seem to work.It happens to me every fall, can't find fish to save my butt, the pond I fish is on the cape and over grown with milfoil.Anybody  have any tips, clues or ideas for me?

Anyone Wequaquet lately? I have been thinking about taking a trip out there to do some fishing. I am wondering if it would worth the drive. Thanks

I was on Snipatuit in Rochester today and the blue bird skies made fishing lousy. The water temp was hovering around 68 and figured fish would on the move. In 4 hours, I got 5 fish with nothing bigger than 14inches. The only lure that produced was a Lucky Craft sammy. I tried texas rigged senkos in open spots in the lily pads, frogs over the pads. I stopped dragging the mojo rig through grass after the 3rd pickerel.

This was the 2nd time I've ever been here and the underwater vegetation was everywhere. It made me remember why I hated it the first time.

For those who ever thought of fishing there, the max depth is around 4ft depending on water level. The lily pads seem to cover a lot of the shore line till about 20ft out in only about 1.5ft of water. After that in turns into thick milfoil/coontail till about 3ft deep then open water at 4ft deep with very little structure.

I got all my fish between the 3 islands.

Well...I was a boating partner for a Paralyzed Veterans of America Tournament  on Cochituate Friday, Saturday and Sunday and I know what was working there.

Most fish were caught on 3-4 ft weedy flats with spinnerbaits. Great practices and Singles winner and team winners used that pattern.

The secondary bite was parallel to the first drop off into 5-8 ft of water using a chrome and black medium diving crankbait or a 4 inch rubber swimbait. Both of these produced consistent limits although not quite the size.

By the way...these men may be paralyzed but they sure can fish. I recommend helping at this tournament to everyone.

I was also at Webster this morning, but put in at the state ramp on the southern end.  FOGGY this morning.  I see the beach in the background of one of your pics, so I guess you used the other ramp on the north side?  My buddy and I were in a canoe and stayed in the southern basin.  You had better luck than us, but we still got a few and missed a few as well.  It was only my second time to Webster, so I'm still learning the place.

Nothing beats getting on a body of water and learning it...just don't forget what you learned today. This is a big lake and it might take a while to learn in a canoe.......good luck.....

Yes, the place is huge.  I do have a trolling motor with a depthfinder in the canoe, so it gets around alright and I have some idea of what's below me.  Big place though, and I knew enough not to go there on a summer weekend in a canoe.  Looking forward to getting there again.
