Close Quarters Bc Setup

Featured Replies

Let me start by saying that I discovered this site a month or two back and I love it. Tons of good info, lots of helpful people, and an overall great community of sportsmen.

I am looking for a BC setup for spinnerbaits/topwater/t-rigs in the 6 ft range. It will be used in tight areas where making a cast with a 7 ft rod maybe difficult. It will probably be matched with my Chonarch 50mg unless I decide to buy a new reel as well. I would like the rod to handle 1/4-3/4 oz range, M or MH power, and fast action. As far as price, $125-$175 is the price point I am at.

Does anyone use a short rod like this? I would love some ideas of what to look at.

Thanks

The PERFECT rod for your applications was made by Shimano until last year; it was in the old Crucial series. I bought this one at a close-out price earlier this year. At 5'9" it is a little shorter than you want but it really is a nifty length for close-quarters. The weight rating on the rod is 3/8 to 1/2 - it is a pretty stout little rod and could probably go to 5/8 or 3/4oz easy enough - for 1/4oz, I might find a different tool.

Be advised that the rear grip is only 6" long so it's a sorta one and one-half hands on the grip if you normally cast with two hands...

Anyway, check eBay for starters - some are still around.

I have a very similar setup for spinnerbaits. It's a 6' M/F I built for myself and it works great. About the closest thing over the counter would be a St Croix AVC60MF msrp $170

Thanks for the tip, Goose. I will check that out. I really like Shimano rods. I have a couple Cumaras that are a joy to fish with. One spinning with a CI4 2500 and a MH casting with a Curado. I was looking at G. Loomis and found the Classic Casting line. They are a little above the price I'm at but ebay may have some deals. I'm thinking about the IMX series either the CR722 or CR723. It would just be another couple weeks of setting cash aside.

5'6" Pistol grip from BP is my fave, but that Shimano is quite interesting!
