Where Would You Go?

Featured Replies

So basically i go out with the wife and kids in the afternoon so they can relax and swim. It gives me an opportunity to get a line wet while we are out. The problem is that they do not want to be near houses and more offshore which limits the good areas that i can fish. Also once we are in a spot we stay there, so running and gunning is out. The forecast is for sunny and hot (97) with winds 5-8mph. This is a clear lake (lake murray) with little vegetation and visibility is about 10ft. I have marked our take off with the red circle. So where would you go if you had to pick one spot away from shore to fish?

There appear to be several points. I would set the boat where the family swims on

the ouside and you cast on the other side of the boat with your lure/bait in 15-20' of

water. If you can locate a sharp drop-off into deeper water, so much the better!

Me personally this looks like it has a channel with some good possible structure offered especially around the 15 to 25 foot range.

I noticed it also offers some cover too maybe, it's kind of difficult to see, but I like the area.

Good eye nitro. Thats a popular spot for the striper fishermen to hang out until they come up. Those "pillers" on the map is a water treatment plant. I will have to see if I can beat the striper guys there :D

The fact you are ancored with your family requires you to keep out of boat traffic lanes.

IF....the point near the blue map pin is out of the boat traffic, I would locate at the base of the V on the fish tail looking underwater flat in about 18' of water. Have the kids swim between the shore and the baot, you fan cast a C-rig worm.

Good luck and be safe!!!

Try dragging a carolina rig or shakey head on the bottom. You can feel for structure (brush/trees/holes/ets) pay attention to depth changes, rocks etc. You might even want to "search" the bottom just a sinker and no hook to minimize hang ups. If it is a rocky bottom, use a broader sinker to minimize getting caught in rock crevices.

Once you get an idea of where the bottom changes due to structure of drop offs, you can target those areas. I would use a shakey head, football jig or drop shot rig. You can adjust the leader on the DS rig if youre not getting bit on the bottom.

If you do go there, there is one spot that really peaks my interest, I have circled it in black, it looks to be a shelf of some sort with a pretty vertical drop to the south of it and a more gradual slope to the North of it, something I don't see anywhere else in the area.

Good luck and be safe !!!

Update: I set up pretty much in the black circle and threw to the shallower water. I was using a green pumpkin 10" worm ( zoom Ol' Monster) and caught this one when it came from the shallow (dark blue) water to the first drop (light blue) in about 12'.of water. It was the only one of the day but i only fished for about 45 min as it was HOT!! (103) so the rest of the time i spent IN the water myself. thanks for the advice!!
