Smelling Gasoline

Featured Replies

After a fishing trip to my local lake which has a 20 MPH speed limit I garage my boat. Then the Garage smells of gasoline. I have not been able to find a leak in the hoses or on the engine. The engine is a 2000 Johnson 115 hp model J115PLSSB carburetored not injected. Any ideas what to check to eliminate the smell?

On what type of boat? I aske because some of the older fuel tanks tend to crack and leak.

I had a similar issue with my Ranger at first and apparently some spilled into the bilge when changing out the fuel filter. I ended up cleaning the entire engine with yamaha engine cleaner and washing it down and running gallons of water with degreaser through bilge system and smelll went away. Also when storing boat make sure your engine is not tilted, carbs tend to leak at times.

Boat is a 2000 Javelin, I always move engine to verticle when in the garage, need the room to get around boat. Although I guess the caarbs could leak a little with the engine tilted on the way home. I have checked the bilge and it is dry. Following my nose the gas smell is definately under the engine cowling.

Wash the engine thoroughly.then squeeze the bulb and watch for leaks. The zip ties on the fuel lines get weak over time and can leak. If you can find the leak and bothers you bad enough you can always pull the fuel line loose when you put it on the trailer and run the gas out it.
