Need Inputs On All Electric Boat

Featured Replies

Hi guys

I am looking to buy a boat for electric only lakes with 36 volt trolling motor bow mounted, but I run into some problems, at least theoretically. I would like to get a 1448 AW Grizzly, add electronics and carpet it, but the sheer weight of batteries and two normal guys (400 lbs) almost exceeds its capacity, however, I do read about people with such a setup and there is no mention of overloading. For all day trolling I expect a constant thrust of 55 lbs is needed and therefore an amp draw of 55 (most likely less due to higher voltage), so with 600 amps of GEL I should be able to run a fishing day of 10 hours charging no more than recommended (90 % of bank). Add 100 amps for misc., and batteries weigh an additional 450 lbs, maybe 500.

So I have looked at 16 feet models such as the Aluma MV 1650 AW and Tracker 1648 AW - large boats indeed for sneaking around on electricity I imagine. I would appreciate inputs on not just the weight dielmma but size too. IE. how easily are these boats driven by a trolling engine.

In case a 16 feet is needed would I be better off with a Deep-V instead? Does it matter in terms of power usage and trolling speed?

Stephan

I don't like a deep v cause they are the least stable.I have a semi v & love it. I'm 300+ lbs & I can stand on my deck & it's stable. An mv would be my choice if I had the money, but they are hard to find used. As far as the weight, most people that modify Jon boats exceed the weight rating. I'm not yelling you it's ok, but me & lots of others are not having any issues.I run 2 40 lb thrust trolling motors on it & it goes pretty good.

Check out www.Tinboats.net. lots of good info there.

My 12V 52lb thrust minnkota only draws 30amp at top speed.

Guy by me builds alot of electric boats. I think he starts with Rhino hulls. He uses an electric outboard that gets the boats on plane!! Pretty impressive but i'm sure not cheap.

I would consider a four battery 24v setup in a boat that size.

And remember you wont be on full throttle the whole time.

What kind of motor does he use?

I agree with the 2 24 volt motors if you can afford it.I plan on going to 2 24 volt, 75-80 lb thrust motors eventually.

Not sure. They are white and look like a 9.9hp in size. They use alot of batteries and run on high voltage. Probably similar to a golf cart.

The motor is a Ray 250 lbs thrust

System 500-5.0 HP, 60V Series Motor

$4,747.00

I didnt say it was cheap though :eyebrows:
