rapala--husky jerk / x-rap ?

Featured Replies

hello, the local sporting good store is having a big sale. One of the items was Rapala products. buy three, get the forth for a penny, so I picked up a few husky jerk and x-rap. I've used the orginal rapala minnow but not these. Any tips on good ways to fish them? I'm still kinda behind the times on a lot of the newer lures.

thanks

They are Jerkbaits.  Basically you use a stop and go retrieve, but with jerks instead of cranking.  Try a jerk, jerk, pause, jerk, jerk, pause, etc.  The bass will tell you if they want it worked faster or slower.  You just have to try different retrieves until you get it right.

You'll like the action.  It is a really responsive lure.  Doesn't take a big movement to really make it shake.  Pretty good choice as jerkbaits go.

Husky Jerks and X-Raps have put more fish in my livewell than any other lures.

That was a heck of a deal on those lures.

X-Raps are one of my most productive lures but I can't say the same about HJ, for some reason I never did well with them, and honestly now I rarely use them, if I think Rapala means X-Rap #8 in Hot Steel.

I fish the x-rap two ways: steady retieve w/ no pauses and a jerk jerk stop retieve which makes it walk the dog undewater.  The hesky jerk I use a long sweep then pause for a couple of seconds reel up slack and repeat.

I like them both they both have their time and place both have different actions but if I had to chose one it would be the X-Rap.

IMO, the HJ works better with longer pauses in colder water (below 50 degrees) and the XRap works better fished more quickly in warmer temps.  (This is for LM.  I have no experience w/ smallies).
