Hand Tying Jig

Featured Replies

Hello bassresource, I have some questions regarding tying hair jigs, I have tied flies before but, I want to try something different. My dad said he would buy all the materials if I could tie him some smallmouth jigs. He wants them tied with various hair then he want some tied with round rubber tied on with thread. I have no idea how to do that, he said it makes them flare more. What kind of materials do I need for some crawfish and baitfish colored jigs? I know about the vise and stuff but, what about thread size and head weight. I want to cast these jigs with no bobber. What kind of materials for the round rubber jigs.

Tyler,

There is a member on here by the name of Smalljaw. He will see this and give you all the info you need. He has tied some hair jigs for me and others and he does a phenomenal job. I have been dabbling in it, but i don't know enough to give you all the correct answers. Just hang on and he will reply. Good luck.

Tyler j, since you know about a vise and bobbin already I will move on to thread, I tie all my bass jigs with 210 denier UTC or Danville flat waxed nylon, I do occasionally use 140 denier for float-n-flies but that is another subject. To make smallmouth jigs you just need the jig head you want to use, the thread and then the type of hair you want, I recommend buck tail and rabbit, those are my main materials for making hair jigs for bass. I can't post pics here anymore or I would show you an example of tying hair with silicone or round rubber in the mix, for the rubber you can buy star flash skirts (round silicone) and then cut the band and use the strands to tie in with the hair. If you look on youtube under  smalljaw, I have some tying videos covering the float-n-fly which uses mallard flank feathers, finesse rabbit hair jigs and buck tail jigs along with a football and a round head craw jig.  Seeing it being done is easier than trying to put it in words.
