How would you fish it!? #2

 

 

I thought this would be a interesting, fun idea:

 

I give you a photo of a spot and i give you the current conditions.

You are given five baits that you must pick from to use.

 

Some of the baits may be difficult to use during given conditions or new to you. 

 

You must chose a bait from the five baits, explain your reasoning, and how would you work it (speed, etc.)

 

The spot:

 

Conditions: Sunny, few clouds in sky, warm water, late May, mid to high 70's ( degrees ), rapid dropoff to deep hole, stained water, mid day, slight breeze

 

 

The baits: [photos not actual scale]

 

1. Strike King Redeye Shad, Bluegill color. 1/2 oz 

2. Gary Yamamoto Senko, 5 inches, Pumpkin black flake color 

3. Strike King KVD Jerkbait, Crystal shad color 

4. Storm Live Kickin' Minnow 

5. Moreau Baits Topwater Field Mouse 

I would probably go with the senko for a few reasons:

1) I don't know what your definition of "warm water" is, but seeing as bass are spawning or close to it mid May, I'm probably fishing the upper lip of the drop for immediate prespawn or spawning bass.

2) slight stain to me means 2+ feet of visibility, so sight fishing is probable.

3) If I'm forced to fish a drop off, and not a spawning flat, the senko is by far going to get bit.

4) senkos catch fish.

5) you didn't give me a crank or jig :-(

Yea, senko's are top at this spot. Jigs usually bring up a lot of muck and weeds if they are on the floor. I gave you a lipless crank!

I would probably pick the senko to fish from the deep hole all the way to the shoreline. The lipless crank would come in a close second.

I'm using the senko also. You can fish the whole water colum from shallow to deep until you find out where they are. This time of year is wacky rig time also. The other baits are a little more specific for me.

I'll take the senko, there are plenty of different ways to fish a drop off with it.

Senko, wacky rigged. I'd cast it to the deep hole, let it sink and drag it up the drop off. And along the shorelines. Not my first choice in these conditions and location, but out of the 5, this is what I would pick.

I would fish the senko on a dropshot, just wiggled and dragged. Maybe the Strom live minnow if they are biting a little closer to the topwater

Jigs dont always bring up much and weeds; only when you fish them in areas with much and weeds. I was under the impression that there was no grass. If there was grass, I'd toss the lipless first. But a lipless crank is not my first (or second, or fifth) choice for fishing drop offs with NO grass.

Gimme that SENKO!!!

 

By the way, I really like this idea for topics. Keep these coming.

I'd lean toward the senko spawn & immediate post spawn. Once they've had some time to recuperate the Red Eye Shad or kickin' Minnow might get a reaction bite

id go with the senko. but seriously now i am wondering why i have no red eye shads in bluegill color, i got a bunch of other cranks in that color...
