Setting The Hook With A Swim Jig

Featured Replies

I have recently started fishing with swim jigs. I had a lot of success fishing with them. My only problem is that I am not having a lot of success at setting the hook. I saw a guy on youtube who said you should set the hook on a swim jig just like you do with a spinnerbait. Does anybody agree with that style of hookset. I haven't ever really ever fish with a spinnerbait either. So, can someone please explain the hookset to me?

Often times a fish will strike a swim jig multiple times without actually taking the bait. the best hook set for a swim jig is to continue to reel until you feel the weight of the fish and just pull into it.

In my experience, when swimming a jig the best way to set the hook is just like a spinnerbait, or crankbait. Feel the fish take your offering, and sweep into a firm set to your left or right.

Thanks so much.

I differ on hooksets. For single hook baits, spinnerbaits, jigs, T-rigs I reel down and come straight up, keeping my hands close to my torso.  For treble hooked baits and C-rigs, I sweep set to the side while reeling.

Thanks papajoe222.

Just do a sweeping set to the left or right like you would with a spinnerbait or crankbait.

I've had consistent success using the method you've described. With a big hookset you'll lose those fish that are chasing. A sharp hook and the speed of the retrieve, along with pulling into the weight felt from the fish is plenty enough to pierce their jaw. I've often encountered the fish continuing to swim at me after feeling the weight. Stay committed to what you feel.

The only instance this changes for me is if I am killing the bait. Such as ripping it and letting it fall, then I will set the hook more like I would a jig as I don't have the force from the retrieve working in my favor.

If I'm fishing it like a spinnerbait, I set it like a spinnerbait, but often, I'm fishing it more like a jig or T-rig, then its wind down and set. I don't do the whole giant dramatic every muscle hookset (for anything really), and its a light hook, so it really wants to pierce. Oh, and I bend the point up ever so slightly, makes a difference.
