Dobyns 703C Or 704C?

Featured Replies

Can't decide between the two, so looking for some help. Primarily will be a weightless 5" senko rod, but will also need to do some 3/8 + trailer (rage craws & bug) t-rigs and smaller from time to time. Maybe do some backup spinnerbaits also, but nothing over 3/8 oz.

733C is a great all around rod for what you need.

Forgot to mention that I am looking at the champion rods in these models.

Well the 3 power is a great senko rod. Personally, 3/8 weight + bait isn't a great choice for the 3 power rod. It's doable, but would not be my first choice. I would get the 4 power (I'd personally use the 734 but if you don't want the 7'3 get the 7'0). I can throw senkos on the DX744 and champ 734 w/o any problems and i use the 744 for 1/4oz-3/8oz texas rig'd plastics. I also use the 734 for spinnerbaits 3/8+. I like the 3 powers more for 1/4oz swim jigs, rage rig'd plastics, 1/8oz trigs, 1/4oz spinnerbaits (3/8 works okay on the 733 as well) stuff like that.

If you stick /w 1/4oz trigs, weightless senkos give or take a small weight, a small spinnerbaits up to 3/8, the 3 power Dobyns would work perfect. 3/8oz weight + bait is pushing it but doable in open water.

That is some of the primary techniques I use my DX703 for. You would be absolutely fine fishing those baits on the 703. If you prefer or need the extra length the 743 would another great choice.

I just got the Dx703 a month a go and I love it as an all purpose plastic rod. I've tossed a few light jigs on it 1/8-1/4 and it is pretty darn good.

The 704dx is my go to jig rod now.

I agree with iabass8. A 3/8 oz jig plus trailer is too much for the 703 and is at the upper limit of the 704 IMO. Anything 1/2 oz and over I would throw on a 5 power rod. So I think the 4 power would be your best bet. But why don't you just call up Dobyns and ask Gary himself!

Thanks for the input guys, much appreciated!

Just going to echo here, either the 703, 704 will work.  I would recommend the 733 or 734 personally.  I am a huge fan of the 734 and typically prefer a bit heavier action rod than most.  My PERSONAL choice for what you've described would be the 734, whichever rod you choose I know you're gonna be happy once you fish with it and hook your first good one on it!
