Spooks From Kayak

Featured Replies

So after watching plenty of videos I get the point of how to work a spook, my question is how do you work it from a seated position in a yak? All the vids I saw used a downward snap of the wrist to make the bait walk?

I just snap it to the side instead of down. The biggest thing I think is having some slack in the line

Spooks are rediculously easy to walk, and can be done with a downward snapping motion as well as to the left or right.

You can snap the rod tip up as well.

Some baits "walk" easier than others.

The Duo Realis Pencil 110 & the smaller Duo Realis Pencil 85, feature an advanced, Japanese engineered design.

A protruding sphere under the face of the bait allows any angler, regardless of skill level to easily produce the classic "walk the dog" retrieve along the water's surface.

It really makes a difference.  Check it out.

A pistol grip rod makes it a whole lot easier

You can walk it with the rod tip upwards if its really far out or just walk it to the side. Here is a quick vid of me using a Pro Sizzle Jr. by Livingston Lures last month for my first topwater redfish. Maybe it will give you a better idea.

Agreed. Fishing inshore with my kayak. .... I throw a bone one knocker spook 80% of my time on the water. A good light weight 7' rod mh with a fast or moderate tip will launch it far and walk it easy. I like 15# yozuri ultrasoft. A short handled rod helps for sure.....but its easily doable with a regular handled rod.

Twitch the rod to the side instead of down. You'll get the hang of it. Another tip is to keep about 10" of slack in your line on long casts so its easier to "snap" the lure. A good snap and a long pause will turn the bait 90° and catch those cautious fish. A steady walk catches the hungry ones.

Also important to tie either a loop knot or add a small split ring to the lure so it walks freely- especially if you're new to walking.

Good luck!
