Lews Magnetic Brake Reels.

Featured Replies

I've got a super duty and just have a few questions concerning the brakes among other things.

First a little background, I also have a chronarch 200e6 and usually only use one centrifugal brake on. I just tweak the spool tensioner pending each lure.

Back to the lews, what setting on the lews of yall think correlates to 1 pin actuated on the chronarch.

One problem I find with the lews is the rod I have it on. It's on a medium 6'6 berkley cherry wood. My chronarch is on a mh Duckett ghost which I love but cannot afford another for a bit.

Any comments concerns or advice are welcome. Another thought is the amount of grease they come applied with. My chronarch was full of it but I endured through it and now I casts like a dream. I think the same will happen with my lews.

Thanks

Because centrifugal and magnetic brakes work at different parts of the cast it is difficult to say that 1 centrifugal brakeis the equivalent of a magnetic setting of 4 for example.   IMHO it is something that you will have to experience and adjust the reel for your casting style.

Start with the basics, turn the magnetic brakes off and adjust the spool tension to get a controlled fall. Set the magnetic brakes to a medium level setting and make your adjustment up or down as appropriate after the result of few casts..

First, I always set my six pin brakes with parity, meaning one or two pairs on, or three on, at every other position. Never just one. I don't know if it's right or wrong, but in my mind it seems balanced that way.

Magnetic brakes are different. Their adjustment is progressive, not linear. With a new reel, I start at full brakes. And dial back every few casts until I find a setting that prevents backlashes, but still allows long casts.

Like aavery2 said, two totally different systems, and the magnetic has very little affect on the beginning of the cast, but more than centrifugal at the middle and end of the cast. I suggest starting at 5 after setting tension knob. Everyone is different but my Super Duty is set on 0 with jigs when flipp'n and 3 for most 3/8 to 3/4 oz lures, when the wind comes into play or wind resistant lures like spinnerbaits, I turn the dial up as needed. The Super Duty is a very forgiving caster as long as your throwing 3/8 oz or better.

Thanks fellas. I got it casting pretty good between 3 and 4 on the dial. I've been throwing weightless stick worms with relative ease and getting good distance. I was just seeing if anybody had relaTed centrifugal pins with the magnetic dial.

You would think that the pins would need to be used in pairs, but I've heard from a few people that odd number of pins pulled is fine.
