Tips on fishing fluke baits ?

Hey, so I have some 6" fluke shad that I wanted some tips on how to fish and how to rig. I typically only fish plastic worms and what not, but I've seen some people using these with great success.

I was looking on the fishing Articles and couldn't find anything..

Any help would be great. Thanks!

generally i work them very slow.  i dont do much with the reel, just jerk the rod tip and a fluke (atleast the ones by zoom) will go straight up and fall very slowly and seductively.  most of your strikes will come on the fall, and its usually a very light bite as the bass simply slurp in your bait.  I have also heard of people using super flukes almost like a topwater.  At high speeds you can almost "walk the dog" with them, and then all of a sudden stop, and use that seductive fall to your advantage.  Hope this helps.

I rig a 5" Super Fluke weightless with a 4/0 extra-wide-gap hook. I use a jerk-pause-jerk retrieve around shallow cover. I also like to use it in heavy vegetation, such as lily pads, working it over, around and through the weeds, letting it sink into holes and at the edges. Also walk the dog with it on the surface.

Most of my strikes are detected by seeing the line move off to the side, so I'm a constant line-watcher.

Soft plastic jerkbaits such as Superflukes or Sluggos are great baits.  I use them a lot of ways, but my main use is in shallow water around cover or over submerged grass.

I use the Superfluke most times, rigged on a 4/0 Round Bend, Offset Gamakatsu hook.  EWG hooks will work also, but I have found the round bend works better for me.

I rig these baits on 15 lb. Yozuri line and a 6'6" MH/Mod Fast Esox rod.  The mod fast tip allows the bass to fully suck in the bait and start to swim off and the MH backbone drives the hook home.  This rod is basically my weightless plastic rod.

My retrieve is simple.  Random jerks and pauses that let the bait sink near cover or fast jumpking style movemnets on the surface.  One of these works best most times for me.  Just experiment until the bass tell you what they want.

These baits are also a secret flipping bait on the trail for some anglers.  They also work on a Crig.

Good luck!

Hey man, thank you, I found that very helpful. I just got my 6ft MH rod out of the closet to try this tomorrow.  Do you think 6ft will be ok? I only have a 6"6 ML or 6ft MH. Senkos I've only been catching with 4" not 5" , so i'm a bit worried these 6" flukes are a bit too big, but we'll see =)

I would definetly use the ML rod.

The tip will flex with the strike and the fish will usually stay on

I use a reel set when using a light rod and flukes.

by that I mean I reel in fast till the rod loads up and then sort of just lean and twist away with only a light rod set just to make sure the hook is in their really good.

this set method works best for me when swimming any kind of soft plastic

good luck and have fun.

I do something quite similar actually. The weather hopefully will be decent for me tomorrow to give them a fair shot.

Glimmer Blue Baby!!! love that bait. :)

using a pistol grip helps also 5'6"  or 6 foot with a medium tip!!

The 6' rod will work fine.  Most of the time, I have the rod pointed down when fish these baits and set the hook to the side.  Same as I would for topwaters, hard jerkbaits, etc.  The shorter rod is easier to work this way.

If I'm bank fishing, I use a 5'6" pistol grip rod for most baits.

If the 6" bait is too big, you can buy the Sluggo in 4" as well.

Good luck!
