Irene

Featured Replies

Saw the term "Irene is coming soon" in some of the threads that were about to be locked. What's up with the whole Irene thing?

It's a song ~

"Irene goodnight, Irene goodnight
Goodnight Irene, goodnight Irene
I'll see you in my dreams"

Routinely used here to indicate that the life of any particular thread is coming close to it's end.

Very close.  It's a 1940's & 50's phrase used to describe an event or situation with a disastrous conclusion. Derived from the song Goodnight Irene first recorded by American blues musician Huddie 'Lead Belly' Ledbetter in 1933.

We use it when a thread is circling the drain, going downhill into the land of negativity and petty fighting, or gone in a completely different tangent than the original subject of the thread.

Or the subject has been discussed ad nauseam Irene comes and locks it ( senko threads call Irene´s attention in about 10 miliseconds :eyebrows: )

That's funny lol. And also a good term. I saw it at first and thought that's what it meant. :-)

A-Jay I now have "Good Night Irene" playing in my head...I wonder if it will go away if this thread is locked?

Finally , I know the history... Circling the drain.. That's funny!

A-Jay it was gone, but now it's back! I don't mind Leadbelly's version so much. Very cool.

I'm not a fan of Irene, except in the case of this thread.

So, how do you fish a senko?
