Saw the term "Irene is coming soon" in some of the threads that were about to be locked. What's up with the whole Irene thing?

Routinely used here to indicate that the life of any particular thread is coming close to it's end.

Very close.  It's a 1940's & 50's phrase used to describe an event or situation with a disastrous conclusion. Derived from the song Goodnight Irene first recorded by American blues musician Huddie 'Lead Belly' Ledbetter in 1933.

 

We use it when a thread is circling the drain, going downhill into the land of negativity and petty fighting, or gone in a completely different tangent than the original subject of the thread.

That's funny lol. And also a good term. I saw it at first and thought that's what it meant. :-)
