i have lots of old lead sitting around the house and was wondering if anybody makes they own weighted hooks. i tried using a soldering iron but it didnt melt the lead. i would like to try avoiding a blow torch for safety and convenience reasons.

all help is appreciated.

However, to let you in on a secret, I bring some clam sinkers with me and add them to my hooks when I need some bottom weight.

 

Not too professional but it works.

I use lead wire which can be obtained from stores that handle tie flying products.

That looks pretty good!

You can get a Lees Hot Pot melting pot for a pretty reasonable price and melt that lead quickly and cleanly. The pot has a pouring spout right on it so it's easy to pour the lead where you need it. I use one for all my pouring.

That´s exactly what I do, I carry the wire and do my weighted hook right on the spot when I need/want. No need to carry around a bunch of weighted hooks.

I use hook weights it is simple, cheap and fast.

 

Another fan of these weights, as you pointed out they're simple, cheap, fast, and effective.

 

I have a d0-it mold for the straight eye hooks in the lighter weights but will try those BPS weights.

I should check out those weights. Only recently did it finally occur to me that I can wrap some suspend strips around a hook and it has worked amazing. You can add just the littlest bit that way also. Has worked well for buzzfrogs. I just want a little weight on the hook the keep it always landing upright and staying that way.
