Braid To Leader Knot Strength?

Featured Replies

Hello,

I'm wondering what your subjective opinions on knot strength is.

Out of the Albright, Alberto, and Seaguar, I believe the Albright is probably the weakest when going from braid to mono or fluoro.

Between the Alberto and Seagur, though, I'm not sure.  They both cast the same for me, and the Seagur is a bit easier to tie I think.

Thoughts?

Regards,

Josh

Never broke an alberto knot before.

Never broke an alberto knot before.

X2 unless it was a tying error. I usually break off at the lure (snell/palomar). I figure if it is good enough For striper it's fine for lmb/smb.

I like the low profile of the albright for casting, but I always use a tiny drop of zap a gap brand super glue over the knot. Mainly use this to eliminate the little frayed ends of the braid tag end, but I assume it helps greatly with the know strength as I've never lost a fluorocarbon leader either. If I break, it's at the hook end.

Josh, I tie either the Modified Albright/Alberto, or a variant of it, or the uni-to-uni.

FWIW, I will go up with 7-15 wraps depending on the line diameter, then back down with 4-7 wraps.

I like the thinness of the MA/Alberto, and it has never failed me ONCE I TEST IT thoroughly before first cast.

By that I mean that I will do several pulls and knot testing first. If it fails, it is in this stage. And this HAS happened to me, usually with slippery and thin diameter lines, in which case I usually go to a Uni-to-Uni.

But on the water, the failure rate is almost zero.

Hi Folks,

Thank you.

I was playing with knots today.  I knew I was going to lose a couple lures the way I was fishing, so I went ahead.

The Seaguar, which is easiest for me to tie quickly, broke when pulling to break it off due to a snag.

The Alberto, tied five up and five down, didn't fail when I had to brake the line.  Rather, it broke at or near the palomar knot!

Five up and five down keeps the Alberto compact like I prefer, and it doesn't seem to slip or break.  I may be switching my go-to knot.

Two bass, by the way.  Both were caught by fishing chartreuse divers stop'n'go.  The bass critters wouldn't touch the jerkbaits.  Weird.

I used to be a uni/uni guy but had trouble with the braid cutting the mono/FC.  Alberto/mod-albright, no problem.  As DarrenM said, I have had the mono pull through on a test.  I test using a steady pull of several seconds while watching the tag line.

I've played around a lot with knot testing, and have pretty much settled on the MA/Alberto as the best all-around. That said, I'd read several recommendations recently for the Seaguar, so I used it this weekend and ended up experiencing the exact same thing - that being that the Seaguar knot connection failed nearly every time as opposed to the knot at the hook/lure going first, which usually happens with the MA/Alberto. If you believe the "Knot Wars" data, the MA/Alberto crushed the competition back in 2010, though not every knot was tested, obviously.

Only use an improved blood knot, never lost a leader, always at the knot to my hook, unless I get lazy and let frayed line get me, but still never loose a blood knot.

When tied correctly none of my knots break, as long as my fishing is pulling out drag.  When I do choose to break off usually the loopknot gets broke not the alberto.

I use the j-knot & the Seguar & never had one fail. They both work real well for me. Personally don't like the Alberto.
